CANTON, Ohio -- Safety Roy L. Williams has been a Cincinnati Bengal for a little more than a year. But he'll consider himself a Dallas Cowboy for the rest of his life. The Cowboys released Williams last offseason. When Jerry Jones informed the five-time Pro Bowler of the decision, the Cowboys' owner asked if there was anything he could do for Williams.
"I want to retire as a Cowboy," Williams said Saturday, recalling the moment while he toured the Pro Football Hall of Fame a day before meeting his former team in the preseason opener.
Jones told Williams to consider it done. They agreed that Williams would sign a one-day contract with the Cowboys when he decided to retire, a ceremonious gesture Jones has given such players as Emmitt Smith and Larry Allen over the years.
Williams, who is entering his ninth NFL season, doesn't know exactly when that day will come but acknowledged that the end of his career could be near.

I have no problem with that at all.

As boring as the off season is, at least that will give us something to talk about for a couple of days. :D

its so sad how quickly he fell off here.

If only woody had stayed healthy, we probably would have seen alot more greatness from roy.

The evolution of the game rendered Roy to mediocrity, given his lack of coverage skills, as I believe Hos pointed out in a nice write up some time back. I'm glad Jerry is allowing him to retire a Cowboy.

I still remember him running stride for stride with Jimmy Smith, making an incredible INT.

That is true to some extent but Roy lost his love for the game and that is the biggest reason his play fell off.

IMO there is nothing wrong with Roy devoting his life to God and his faith but it took his aggressive nature right out of him. He became what Plaxico Burress rightfully called a 220 lb ankle grabber.

It was a great play that few remember. They all want to remember "bad Roy" of the last couple seasons he was here.

Good Roy from his first few years was a dominant player. He made alot of plays vs the run, pass and on special teams. He was a knockout hitter that caused alot of incompletions via intimidation. He also played with alot of passion.

I wish we had that player on this team now.

There were several great moments, weren't there?

One of my favorites - a pick 6 in the closing moments of an Eagles game about four / five years ago, for the win.

He also made Taylor fumble near the our goal line that prevented the go-ahead (or to tie, cant remember) score late in the 4th quarter to pretty much win the game.

He was a BEAST!!!

He just lost his desire to really work to be the best at his game. Shame, his first 3 years I thought we had a safety that would surpass Cliff Harris and Ronnie Lott.

I think the way the NFL started to flag him, making the horse collar a penalty, and overly aggressive hitting flagrant fouls probably did more for taking the aggressiveness out of him that him finding God.

I agree.

It was evolution, not religion, that brought about the demise of Roy Williams.:D

Any by evolution, I mean the changes in the game of football.

Sad really - he could have been one of the greats if not for is lack of passion and a game that evolved to expose his weaknesses.

The RW vs. ST debates seem so long ago; shame that neither will see Canton.

I have two great Roy memories.

The first is the interception return for a touchdown in the 21-20 win over the Eagles on Monday Night Football. Granted, McNabb planted the football right in his breadbasket, but it was still a great moment.

The second one was in Parcells' first season in the game against the Cardinals. I can't recall it exactly, but I know Roy put Emmitt out of the game with a monster hit that cracked his shoulder blade and then helped us get a safety later in the game.

He was my favorite current Cowboy, until Romo came along. Hearing this pleases me a great deal.

Too much weight, slowed him down. Think I heard last night that he had lost 20 pounds or so. As I recall from last night his hit caused Felix to fumble the ball at the goal line.

And he had pretty good coverage on Witten at the goal-line too.

I miss that Roy Williams.

I've never been shy, or ashamed, of admiting that I was a huge fan of him. I loved him in college and just was thrilled when Dallas drafted him. I was still proud to have him as a Cowboy all the way till the day they cut him.

Yep. Playing at around 218-220 now. He caused the fumble and he had pretty solid coverage on Witten in the endzone on that third down play.

Now I dont know if that translates to him covering well all year long but I hope he does well all the same.

I think it's kind of weird he'd make that proclamation before he's even mentioned he's ready to retire.

What if he goes on to play 4-5 more years and wins 2-3 SB with that one particular team, and he plays a big part in there success?

If I were a fan of that team, I'd be pretty pissed-off if he just suddenly snubs my team and its fans!

It's a nice gesture on both their parts. RW gave us a few good years so I have no problem with it.

What if Roy Williams intercepts a would be game winning TD pass in the superbowl? Can't imagine him retiring a cowboy then

Roy was my favorite Cowboy, after Emmitt, growing up. I started watching 'Boys games when the 5-11 saga began, so Roy was the first player I really got excited watching.

I'm glad he wants to retire a Cowboy.

Wonder how this is gonna fare with Bengal fans? It would go over like a turd in the punchbowl around here if someone did that.

If Cowboy fans didn’t complain how would they ever show appreciation?
