I asked a friend who lives in Austin and loves steak.

He recommended Flemings, Texas Land & Cattle, Ruth's Chris, or Fogo de Chao. He said the last one is unique. He did not explain why. He bet you'd choose Flemings based on your criteria.

Congrats to your lady. Enjoy the meal.

Basically, it's all you can eat of various types of meat that they bring by and cut off pieces of for you. All of it cooked perfectly and absolutely wonderful tasting. There is also a buffet of various sides that you can stock up on to eat with it. The sides are excellent as well.

It's a bit pricey, but MAN, it's worth it.

I don't remember the name of the place but they did a segment on Diner, Drive Ins and Drive about a place in Austin that looked pretty good. It was a family restaurant and what I remembered the most about it was the pit was in the middle of the restaurant, Someone else can problem tell you the name of it. The brisket looked awesome.

Saltgrass and Texas Land & Cattle are not like the others. They're the "Chilis" of steak places. Not at all fine dining.

Just take him to 3 Forks if you haven't been.

There's a favorite of mine on the menu there that sells for $120, which I can get for $35 down the street at the wine merchant. But of course, the last time I went, the wife wanted it because it's one of "our wines." I like good wine, but very few wines are worth that to me.

Hofbrau is a great place to eat. Unfortunately, it does not meet your standard of fine dining, but you should try it sometime.

Texas Land & Cattle is one of my favorites. You can't go wrong there. There are plenty of locations around town.

Trulucks is also a fine place. I really enjoy it.

Austin Land & Cattle also has good food.

Sullivans is nice.

One tip -- Fleming's (at least the one in Houston) occasionally serves a porterhouse off-menu, which you have to ask about. Trust me, it is heaven.

I'm not much into chain restaurants.I don't necessarily mind if it's a chain if it's good. I have no issue with people replicating success, as long as it's not at the cost of quality. But yeah, if I'm in another town, I like to try local places.

Fleming's doesn't have an issue with quality, though.

Texas Land and Cattle's steak melts in your mouth, I'd have to say that's the best steak I've ever had. I've been to Ruth's Chris but it's just a fancy hoity toity place. It's a nice place to show off to the pops but Texas Land and Cattle is a little less showy. Take it from a girl's perspective. What does your girly say about it? It's on 4th Street and Red River if you're heading west on 4th from 35. Pretty dang nice place. Dad had to remind me that I have been there with one of his business deals for a private reception this year. Call about the dress code though because neither of us could remember if it was strictly coat and tie. I want to say it was.

I want to say the bill came out to $185 a head with cocktails and a few bottles of wine. We brought our own magnum of 1994 Silver Oak Napa to start, then went off the usual extravagantly overpriced wine list. I had the filet with crab meat. Damn fine eating.

3 Forks would be my second choice.

Absolutely. There's a line in the sand where the evening changes from "going out to eat" to "dining out". I might be a bit snobbish when it comes to things of this nature, but one of my bucket list items is the chef's table at the French Laundry.

Your referring to Salt Lick BBQ (http://www.saltlickbbq.com/index.html) in Driftwood and/or Round Rock, just outside Austin.

Great Q, and a legendary TX BBQ joint, but probably not what the steak-burner's looking for for an upscale dinning place.

Agreed... Fogo is a true religious experience...

From what I am seeing, it is all you can eat steak, all kinds of different cuts, cooked the way I want. How could it not be?

Hos, pork, lamb and chicken as well...

You get a little coaster that is green on one side and red on the other. Leave the green side up and the guacho's continually come by carve meat onto your plate. If you want a break or time to finish what you have, flip it over to red.

A couple of words of advice. The salad bar is pretty extensive. Back off and save room for the meat. Second, get the Papaya Cream for dessert. The papaya breaks down the beef and you won't be so bloated after consuming 10 pounds of delicious protein.

Just be careful traveling to and from. The original location is off of a winding two lane ranch road. There tend to be a few drunks and motorcyclists on the road. There also may be a few Lance Armstrong wannabes during the daylight hours.

Here's the dinner menu link. Dad's bill went through the roof based pretty much on the bottles of rotten grapes. He doesn't remember if there was a charge for the private room reservation but a fair amount of places do have such things that can run from $150-$500.

Mmm.....lobster bisque.

Throw in some diced hearts of palm and a little bit of roasted red bell pepper and use it for a sauce over grilled red snapper.

Good eats.

last update, my GF graduated and the whole weekend was amazing.

as for the steakhouse, 10/10 the service was great the food kept coming, the steaks all came out cooked perfectly to order the flavor was amazing! i can not speak on a regular dining experience but if you are going with a group for a private party it was awesome and i would recommend it to anyone. we got our own room and service staff and the drinks stayed filled and dishes were cleared right away and the courses came quickly. the sides weren't anything to write home about but the apps and steak more than made up for it. ohband get the cheesecake, it is better than cheesecake factory and is so light and fluffy it just melts in your mouth
