OXNARD, Calif. -- Dallas Cowboys (http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/dal/dallas-cowboys) rookie receiver Dez Bryant (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=13215) took significant strides Monday in his recovery from a right high-ankle sprain, but he's been ruled out of Saturday's preseason game against the Houston Texans (http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/hou/houston-texans).

Bryant ran and cut off his right foot for the first time since suffering the injury during a July 30 practice. He jogged through routes before practice under the supervision of receivers coach Ray Sherman and worked on the resistance cords with associate athletic trainer Britt Brown during the workout.

However, Bryant was informed that he would not play Saturday. He still hopes to play in the Sept. 2 preseason finale against the Miami Dolphins (http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/mia/miami-dolphins), but the athletic training staff is focused on getting him completely healthy for the Sept. 12 season opener against the Washington Redskins (http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/wsh/washington-redskins).

"It's very frustrating, but at the same time, I've got to look at the big picture," Bryant said after a post-practice teaching session with offensive coordinator Jason Garrett (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=509). "I'm trying my best to look at the big picture instead of what's going on now. That's the Washington Redskins."

Bryant has to understand it's in his best interest to wait and not rush back... High ankle sprains are nasty.

I agree with this 100%. Yes I would love to see him back on the field ASAP but I want him to take his time because he is extremely important to this offense.

No he's not. Not yet but we have invested a high draft pick in him and don't want to waste it. Having said that, I believe he will be important, just not yet.

No problem holding him out and letting him get back to full strenght. I am encouraged that he is out running and cutting on the ankle I have a feeling if this was reg season Dez would be playing.

You can tell the guy is frustrated. I'm hoping he at least gets a series in that last preseason game if at all possible.
