OXNARD, Calif. — If the ability to take a joke were the deciding factor in making an NFL roster, undrafted rookie safety Barry Church would already be a lock for the Dallas Cowboys.
Church's teammates have been all over him ever since San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers prevented him from scoring a touchdown in the Cowboys' 16-14 preseason win over the Chargers on Saturday.
After scooping up a fumble in the second quarter, Church appeared headed for an easy score. But after running out of gas around midfield, the former Toledo standout couldn't elude the hard-nosed Rivers.
“I got a lot of grief,” Church said. “It was, ‘Man, he wears a knee brace,' and ‘You let a quarterback catch you?' and ‘Man, I can't believe that.' I got everything, every word in the book.”
Even another undrafted rookie safety, Danny McCray, took a verbal shot at Church as the two walked off the field at the end of practice Tuesday morning.
Noticing 37-year-old backup quarterback Jon Kitna in front of them, McCray said jokingly to Church, “Hey, you know he would have caught you, huh? He would pass you up just like Rivers passed you up.”
Told McCray's comments, Kitna played along, saying, “I've got better moves than Church does, I know that. I would have scored.”
