So I'm convinced to look at another band besides Metallica. I kind of like Lamb of God now but I don't like all that screaming, however I like the actual music though. Do you have any suggestions to me?

Thanks,
MB

I'm in the same boat. I like heavy metal but not the screamo stuff. I gotta be able to understand and appreciate the lyrics.

I've been way into Electric Wizard lately.

Shrinebuilder is pretty good.

Also, Spirit Caravan.

Youtube "funerapolis" by electric wizard. Tell me those riffs aren't smashin' your brain!

Since you're mentioning Metallica and going by your handle, I'm guessing you don't mind old school metal?

Megadeth
Slayer - some screaming though :)
Judas Priest
Iron Maiden
Old Merciful Fate (Melissa and Don't Break the Oath)
Pantera
Destruction - has some serious bad singing but I love the music.
Sepultura
System Of A Down

Nu metal blows goats for quarters.

For me, Suicidal Tendencies, Pantera, OLD Metallica, and OLD Slayer are always going to top lists. Metal's heyday was in the mid to late 80's and early 90's IMO. A lot of very good bands from that era.

As far as new metal...I can't find much that I like that isn't ruined by the idiots that listen to them. They all just come across as ghey *** Korn wannabes....and I hate Korn.

Thrash metal on the other hand..... check out Municipal Waste.

Would you care to listen to progressive metal?

If so, Devil Sold His Soul is a great band.

Surely you're not talking about BLS

Surely you're not talking about BLS

Not really. I'm more or less talking about current metal in general. BLS doesn't bother me, in fact, I actually like some of their stuff....but I find them more of an exception than the rule these days.

Thing is I like Death Metal but not with all that screeming. I prefer newer metal to be honest.

They're on a whole other level completely. There's everything else way down here, and then there's Tool, way up there. Greatness.

I agree with you about current metal. It's a pretty weak field. I just wasn't sure if you heard BLS yet or not. Glad to hear that you have. I'm constantly surprised by how many people I know that like heavy music and have never listened to them. I really think they're the cream of the crop and Zakk Wylde is a songwriting machine. Plus he plays what he thinks is cool....slow, fast, acoustic, electric, whatever he's feeling at the time. It's how music is supposed to be done.

Maybe it is just me but I just don't think BLS is that good.

I had someone recommend them to me once, so I listened to two of their cds and I think I liked a total of two songs.

There is not that much newer metal I like as a whole. I do like godsmack.

In the last couple of years I have found 2-3 death metal like bands that I like their music but find the lyrics silly. They kind of specialize in lyrics One is Nile that the lyrics concentrate on an egyptian theme. One is Amon Amarth that concentrates on viking themes and the other is Behemoth that concentrates on roman themes.
I like the music as it is heavy but still retains melody where most of the newer metal bands seem to forget melody in their work.

Different Strokes for Different Folks. I am curious as to which 2 cds you listened to though.
I found it funny that you thought death metal lyrics were silly. :laugh2: That's like saying "I found water to be wet."
I never really thought of Metallica and Megadeth as melodic either, but I suppose they are on some songs.

You need to go outside the US for the good stuff these days. Not that I don't have a soft spot for bands like Disturbed or Avenged Sevenfold.

That's how I feel about Opeth. Easily my favorite band and nothing else really comes close. They're a progressive death metal band (with HEAVY emphasis on the progressive part...especially their later stuff) and through them I've discovered other awesome bands like Porcupine Tree and Katatonia. Great, great stuff and Mikael Åkerfeldt is a god among men.

I love Porcupine Tree. If Ackerfeldt is a God among men, then Steven Wilson is , for sure.

It's a shame they don't have a whole lot of mainstream exposure. It's not like they're an extreme band or anything. Probably too proggy for their own good.

This might be what you're looking for. Some of it has more screaming than others (As I lay dying, all that remains, underoath), some of it is a little bit poppy (lostprophets), but they all have some heavy stuff musically anyways.

To the metal snobs, don't waste your breath insulting my tastes. Story of the Year is my favorite band, and I don't care if you like them or not.

yea killswitch is a good one. I think it's pretty hard to find a lot of that heavier stuff without screaming or growling, but it's probably out there somewhere.

I agree with the poster who said you'll like bullet for my valentine. They are pretty similar to Killswitch, just a little more melodic.

If you like melodic, progressive metal, Dream Theater is king. The musicianship in that band is unparalleled. Their influences include Deep Purple, Rush, Yes, Metallica, Pink Floyd, Iron Maiden.....very diverse.

Mike Portnoy Quits Dream Theater

Mike Portnoy dropped a bombshell on Dream Theatre fans on Wednesday, announcing that he is leaving the group after 25 years.

Portnoy is currently playing with Avenged Sevenfold, taking the place of drummer James "The Rev" Sullivan who was found dead in his home last December.

Both Dream Theater and Portnoy have issued statements about splitting (you can read both in full below) but Portnoy summed us his reasons for leaving by saying, ""After having had such amazing experiences playing with Hail, Transatlantic and Avenged Sevenfold this past year, I have sadly come to the conclusion that I have recently had more fun and better personal relations with these other projects than I have for a while now in Dream Theater"

Give the man credit for doing what makes him happy. Although while I'm sure it's true, a little more tact in his statement might have been a better idea. I mean, he has spent 25 years in the band, no need to give a backhanded slap on your way out.
