The Patriots are NOT the model franchise people (article has been shortened)

Sources: Logan Mankins nixed apologyEmail Print Comments150 By Adam Schefter

Two weeks before they had quarterback Tom Brady under contract, the New England Patriots nearly re-signed Pro Bowl guard Logan Mankins.

But at the last moment, just when both sides thought there would be a deal, talks collapsed over an apology, according to multiple sources familiar with the situation.

Shortly before the deal could be consummated, the Patriots asked Mankins to apologize to Patriots owner Robert Kraft for comments he made in June, questioning the New England owner's integrity. Mankins did. He called Kraft, apologized and explained why he spoke out in the way he did. It was a nice conversation and it paved the way for Mankins' long-term deal to be consummated.

Then, about 90 minutes later, just before finalizing the deal, the Patriots requested Mankins issue a public apology. Not only did Mankins refuse, but he became offended, according to sources. The optimism that had been built, the momentum that the talks had generated, completed collapsed -- and even regressed.

Now Mankins no longer wants to play in New England, and the Patriots may be forced to trade him with no resolution in sight.

Can you imagine the publicity this would get if Jerry had done this? Demanding a public player apology? Then signing Brady to $18M / year? Good luck with that, Pats.

If this is true, man, its kind of not too good show of leadership Craft. But at the same time, Mankins questioned integrity of Robert Craft, which would be pretty damning. But I think if it was Jerry Jones, he wouldn't request a Public apology, since Jerry seems like he doesn't take it too personally such stuff.

Isnt the reason Mankins is upset because Belicheater and Kraft promised him a long term deal, then renegged?

Yeah. LOL at those saying the Pats are finished.

Its only one week and its against a team that I don't think is a playoff team... but we'll see.

I still think they make the playoffs and can make a deep run, if not win it all.

i know this has been tossed around for weeks but we really need to give NE a call. I would give a 2 & 5 in a heartbeat.

2 and a 5? So obviously you were okay giving up a 1 and a 3 for RW then, because two picks for a Guard is insanity. He's no Larry Allen.

I have a feeling that if he hits the open market next off-season, he's a Cowboy. I doubt we trade for him unless Kosier's injury is worse than being reported.

Asking a player to make a public apology is ridiculous and belittling to the player. Its as if the Patriots want him to publicly admit to being a jerk. Mankins is right to refuse.
