Rams Relegate Faulk to Backup; Jackson to Start

Jim Thomas, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports St. Louis Rams RB Marshall Faulk will serve as a backup in 2005. However, head coach Mike Martz called Faulk's role with the team a significant supporting role. "I think he has a chance to be outstanding in that role," Martz noted. He added the move will allow Faulk to stay fresh all year and be at the top of his game.

RB Steven Jackson will take over as the team's starting tailback during the 2005 season. "It gives us our best lineup," Martz said of the move.

I do not know if it is balls....but I think it is smart.

Let Jackson be your workhorse as Faulk is getting up there in age and is always getting injured.

Keeps faulk fresher later in games if the need him, and later in the season if they need him.

Well... you certainly remember my man-love for Jackson last year (Julius was second on my list for those that don't remember... :D )... but my concern was with Jackson's knee... and a report about a month ago said that the Rams were also concerned about his durability...

I think Faulk/Jackson may end up being 1a/1b... Jackson is a phenom... and Faulk needs no touting... but evidently the knee is a problem...

This move makes all the sense in the world if you're the Rams. They drafted Jackson to be the heir apparent and he will obviously take the starting slot next season. Dunno if the Rams would be giving the vote of confidence to Jackson right now if they were too concerned about the knee.

At any rate, it's not like St. Louis will worry too much about one back or another getting too many carries, or if one runner isn't getting his fair share. They simply aren't a running football team under Mike Martz. In fact, the Rams ranked 30th in the NFL in rushes attempted last season. In 2003, they were 28th in the same category and in 2002, they were dead last.

Mike Martz is the same head coach who once stated how he'd love to throw every down if he could.

I wasn't saying it was a mistake or wrong just that it takes a lot to make the icon of your team, a future HOFer, second string.
