I have given plenty of my thoughts on your team in several threads.
I am looking for your overall impressions of Trent Williams.
This is not a "he got away with 8 holding penalties" thread. If there were blatant Alex Barron like holds that were not called, please point to the specific play.
If not, I am just trying to get a gauge on your thoughts, seeing that many of you could also be Sooner fans.
My quick thoughts: Overall I thought he was pretty good for his first game, being left on an island against the best pass rusher in the NFL. His blocking on the Cooley screen pass was a thing of beauty and DeMarcus never got one of those kill shot momentum changing sacks. Hell, just giving up 1 sack considering the scheme is something I am very pleased with.
If you had told me in July that he would be 1 on 1 with Ware most of the night, I would have figured he'd have a Winston Justice vs the Giants night, where WJ gave up 7 sacks.

I was with Shanny when he took Trent over Okung. Most people disagreed then and still do today.
I think he will be a good player though.

I wasn't that high on him before the draft and I definitely would have taken Okung over him, but he played extremely well Sunday night and looks like a legit left tackle.

How about you go away. Go back to ES and make threads about how ya'll are going to win the Super Bowl.

It's hard to say. The gameplan was to get rid of the ball quickly. McNabb's YPA was only 5.3 which ranks around Brady Quinn and Jamarcus Russell from 2009. Portis average 3.5 yds per carry and the TOP was one of the lowest in week 1. It's tough to evaluate mainly because of the gameplan. I'm not taking a shot, I just cannot tell either way.

Actually, there were two blatant holds on Trent Williams that went uncalled according to the radio this morning. I was losing reception when they came back from commercial, but one was when we had you backed up close to your own end zone. The other, I didn't hear anything about.

He played decently, but not great. He definitely would have been in trouble if you had been trying to throw downfield more.

Maybe you two could get your panties out of a bunch.
Anyway to the question...I was impressed by how well he played. I thought you should have taken the OSU tackle instead but Williams did look good Sunday night, for the most part.
Only Skins players that really impressed me was Landry and Orakpo , Landry wasn't very good last year so i was shocked by how well he played I already knew Orakpo was good before you drafted him and forced me to hate him forever.
Kinda hard to judge anyone on your offense because your offense didn't do anything, Ware had a damn good first half of that game and he was mostly lined up over Williams, however Ware only had 1 sack going against him and you'd expect a rookie to get absolutely abused lining up across from Ware

Looked alright. He's certainly got the athleticism, but his technique has a long ways to go. Didn't do much in the run blocking game for the most part.

Ware got a sack but didn't run circles around him, so I thought he acquitted himself quite well.

It was tough for me to see, really, because like a few people pointed out, they gameplanned for the short passing game. They'd also use different formations to spread our OLB's outside in coverage to keep them from rushing the passer.

Honest evaluation, it's very difficult to gauge how good or bad at this point. I tend to think it will eventually be very good. I say this because DWare actually had a great game. Williams, for the most part, was lined up on him and so, your first reaction is to say that Williams probably didn't have a very good game but that may not be accurate.
For a rookie, starting his first game, I thought he did well. That's a tough matchup for anybody in the NFL and as a rookie, well, it's just that much more difficult. I saw a few good things from Williams, as I watched the game and I saw a few plays that were not very good. However, he has all the natural ability in the world. He looks like a young Flozell Adams to me except, it appears as if he can actually understand the snap count, which is a real advantage over Flo at that age. But physically, he looks a lot like a young Flo to me.
The one thing I will say about Williams, that impressed me was the fact that when DWare went down, Williams went over and made a nice gesture of sportsmanship. That's always a good thing in a young player, or any player.
You might just have yourself a good player there.

All things considered. 1st game, up against Ware, a good portion of that 1-on-1. He did really well. Looks to have a bright future.
I was also greatly impressed with Orakapo.

God I wish some of our players took the game as serious as the fans. If people like Gurode, Davis, Bennet, and Roy Williams played all out, this team would be unstopable.

Yeah but remember he was lined up against a turnstile most of the night.

Quick to praise the OU player and play down the play of the play of the UT player, shocking ;) :laugh2:

It wasn't Williams doing the holding, but Ratliff was held all night long in that game. I have no problems with the penalties that were called against us, but I do have a problem with the holding penalties that weren't called against the Skins, especially where Rat is concerned.

Their center did get away with a few there, for sure, but that happens in every NFL game really.

Williams did a lot of things very well. He was great at the second level, and in space. He seems to have a very a natural talent of locking onto defenders off the line of scrimmage, a skill that very few offensive lineman really have. The most obvious example of this was on the screen pass to Chris Cooley (http://www.footballoutsiders.com/player/15649/chris-cooley) in the first quarter where he pulled outside, locked onto a safety and drove him straight to the sideline.
More analysis at the link. I thought Trent was average which actually has me pretty excited for his future. He may not be a Ryan Clady, but if he gets to the level of a Chris Samuels I'll be very happy.

It is an unfortunate part of the game . Holding is probably called less than 50% of the time ..it all depends how blatantly it was carried out.. also refs sometimes miss the obvious call and see it in the replay when it is too late but make up for it with a tick tacky penalty such as an illegal shift or other technical fouls - Like the Cooley penalty in the 4th quarter .
The last thing a ref wants to do is make a call that alters the outcome of the game on the field but the Barren hold on Rak was so obvious they had no choice .
As for Williams I thought he had a good game for a rookie going against Ware . Somewhat counter intuativly Ware also had a very good game as well . He limited the Redskins in the play calling and I think if we had tried to really air it out Ware would have had more than one sack .

Seems like a good young OT. Obviously its too early to tell much about a guy with only a preseason and 2 games under his belt. The Skins needed an OT and they got one. He seems to be holding his own, which is what you want from a rookie OT.
Matched up against Ware and Mario Williams in his first two games and only allowed one sack.
Hard not to be impressed as a 'Skins fan.
