A Tough Day to Take
Both players who made the team and those who didn't will never forget cutdown day.

For NFL players and coaches, Sunday was one of the best days of the year, the beginning of a new season of the game they love. The weekend before, however, brought with it one of the worst days in the business.
Saturday, Sept. 4, was "cut day" around the league, the day teams are forced to trim their rosters from 75 players to a maximum of 53, the day more than a few young men said goodbye to their dream of playing this game professionally. For some of the 22 guys the Cowboys let go, the football portion of their lives, after a decade or more, has come to an end.
Woe to the one who has to be the bearer of bad news, Wade Phillips.
"These days are tough," the Cowboys coach said on Sept. 3, as he, the front office and his assistants held final discussions and considered their roster one last time.
"Certainly it's tougher on the guy that doesn't make it than it is on the coach, but you still have feelings. … There're people involved. I don't think I ruin their life if they don't make our football team because I didn't make our football team and it didn't ruin my life. But it's still personal and you can't get around it. But I always do it myself. I always want to be the one to tell them I appreciate what they did, because I do......
