View Full Version : Ok, so who do YOU think we should do at QB?

I'm neutral on Bledsoe/Vinny/etc. BUT, since so many people are convinced that it's a bad signing--IF we sign him--here's my question. (Plus, I'm hoping we can talk about something other than Bledsoe.)
Right now, we only have Henson & Romo on the roster as QB, since Vinny is a FA. So--for everyone--what do you suggest at QB? Do we stick with just those 2 for the season, which would probably mean Henson starts but just Romo as a backup? Do we bring in a veteran QB as insurance? If so, who do you think should be signed? (I think Hasselbeck can be eliminated, since it looks pretty solid that Seattle will keep him.) Does the team automatically tell the guy he's a backup to Henson, or do they get to duke it out in TC? Or, toss in your own scenario.
Ok, let's hear from you folks.

The team has to bring in a vet. My first calls would be to Cincy and Jacksonville to gauge interest in a trade for Kitna or Garrard.
If either of those deals fell through, I guess I would look at Vinny or Bledsoe, they are probably the best of a very weak rest.

I think we have to sign 1 veteran QB.
All the ones in FA have flaws.
I would sign a vet QB who would be most willing to compete for the starting QB position and who would not want significant guaranteed money.
I still think that we will give Henson a shot sometime and we do not want to guarantee a large amount of money for these flawed vet QBs as they may not even be starting.
Frankly said, I'd give Holcomb a look (if he's released) or K. Warner - if he can pass the physical.
I'm not against VT, but in case Henson isn't ready to go, I'm not sure VT will last the entire season.

Ok, I'm gonna get toated for this but I truly think Brad johnson is the best of the available bunch. He's been a winner and very productive where ever he's gone. He led Washington to a top 5 offense when he was there. He led Minny to a #1 offense when he was there and he did the same for consecutive years with a tampa offense with mediocre receivers at best. He's very smart and accurate with a good (not great) arm. I challenge anyone to show me where he has been bad in the last 8 years. :D

Why is Jerry hiring Bledsoe for the Desperados?

Honestly,
I would try to sign, in this order:
Kitna would be my first choice. Before Palmer, he was on his way to becoming an upper echelon QB.
Holcomb does nothing but win. Couch was force feed on the team but Hoclomb was the guy the team would play for in Cleveland.
Warner, before the hand injury, was throwing for 36 TDs against 22 INTs, over 4800 yards and almost 70% percentage and a 109 QB rating for the season. Those are Manning/Marino numbers folks. Even last year, he had a 95.7 QB rating for the year. He's played in the NFC east for a season and he knows one of our conference rivals. When he is physically right, he doesn't get sacked. He is not going to outrun anybody but he has an extremely quick and accurate release when he's healthy.
Johnson is what he is. He's a career 84 QB rating guy with 143 TDs vs 98 INTs. He is a Vet and he would be a guy who could come in short term and steady the ship, if he were at the right price.
Further, I would take Smith or the kid from Cal, or Andrew Walters of Arizona St. if they somehow fell to us. If not, I would absolutly consider Lienart in the supplemental if we didn't get one of these other guys.
In short, I would ship Romo off, bring in a franchise type young QB and a short term vet. The thing I would insure is that the team be covered is Henson can't win the job out right or got injured. I'd also insure that I brought in good young compatition for Henson in years out. Either he works out or not. If he does, great, we can trade our young guy for picks. If he doesn't, we're not starting over two years down the road and trying to obtain a francise guy after Parcells is gone. In addition, if we have a good young QB already in the program, he's ready to play in two seasons and we're more attractive to a good coach. Easier to sign a top guy to come to Dallas.
Some don't agree that spending draft picks on franchise QBs are the way to go. I'm of the opinion that good players will always be worth something and that if your not sure of your QB spot, you invest in it until you are. If you don't have that, you don't have anything.

Why the boner for Kitna? The guy is a 3rd stringer?

Continue to work with Henson to get him ready for this training camp. Have a vet QB behind him and should Henson show in the pre-season that he is still a long ways off then go with the Vet.

Holcomb as starter this year & next, in that time make your mind up on if Henson is the future or look to draft Leinart next year

Of your group, I'm a little partial to Warner. I've never been a fan of Brad Johnson, but he's done well throughout his career.
As for Kitna, I think he's Brees before there was a Brees. He underachieved, had a career year, and promptly got benched for a kid with a stronger arm. Doesn't mean he wouldn't do well, but to get him you'd have to trade for him. I don't want to give up picks for another QB right now.
I'll say it again, I think Holcomb is the ideal backup. Good QB for short periods, but not really a season-long option.
Regardless of who's brought in, I think there should be an open competition. May the best man win.

I agree WG. Four things I'm certain of.
1. No matter what happens this year, we need to be certain that our future QB is on the roster at it's conclusion.
2. Any Vet QB we sign (barring the remote possability we get a David Rivers or the like in trade), no Vet QB should be signed as a multi year starter.
3. Compatition should be open. Henson should not be given the job. He has to earn it if he's going to be our guy.
4. The reverse is also true. No Vet should be brought in and guaranteed the starters job. The best player should play and the compatition should be open all year. If by the 5th game, Henson is better, then he should play.
