View Full Version : Let's say Jerry brought in Drew Brees

It would take two first round picks to bring in Brees. One this year, and one in 2006. For this argument, let's make the assumption that Brees is not a one year wonder, and that he will continue to shine and play on an All-pro level.
Now, wouldn't the move make sense? We would still have a first rounder this year, and through trades or small deals, we could aquire a first rounder next year.
So the way I see it, the only argument people could make is that Drew is a one year wonder. If he's not, then this deal makes plenty of sense to me.
Thoughts?

Probably just me but I believe it's going to take more than two first rounders since they got that and a third from the Giants last year for Rivers. Not only that but you're taking a huge gamble and you're wagering a large fortune on the hope that he's not a one year wonder.
Add the fact that Brees wants a long term deal, so throw that into the gamble as well...

With the history of this team throwing away first round draft choices and on top of that the poor picking this team has done over these last 5 or so years and now you want to trade away picks...NO THANKS!!!

I believe(though I'm not sure) that Brees has a nonexclusive franchise tag. That means if San Diego can't match an offer from another team, then they are forced to release him for two first rounders. Everybody knows San Diego can't match any deal with Rivers there.
You're right though, it would be a big gamble. Big gambles can pay off...big.

I find it comical and ironic that Cowboys fans are so adament against Drew Brees, seeing how our quarterback situation is about to get a shot in the arm with Bledsoe. If they could do anything to improve it, they should. Spare no expense.

This isn't like the galloway debacle. This is a shot at clearing up this quarterback mess we've had since Troy Aikman!

i would'nt give two first rnd picks for him.there's as good a chance of him being a one year wonder as there is him being a solid nfl qb.i think to assume he will play at an all pro level from here out is a stretch.the thing is i don't see why s.d. would trade him and go with the unproven when you have a good team. if i'm s.d. i franchise him and make him show me he can do it again.if he can i trade rivers,if he struggles i play rivers and bench him and tell the league he looked great but we decided to go with the younger guy and trade him next off season

Just so we are using facts, San Diego has tons of cap space.

and just being honest here Cowboy fans, with the way we've been throwing away draft picks these last, oooh, I'd say ten years, we might as well give them to somebody else :D

I don't think there is a snowballs chance in hadies that this would happen; but if it did, after paying the price it would take to bring him in you could expect to see him starting for several seasons. We would all be praying that his play last season wasn't a fluke.

We have more problems than the QB position. Giving up two first round picks for a QB when Dallas has multiple, multiple holes on both sides of the ball just doesn't make sense. What good is having a QB when we can't block for him nor can we stop the other team from scoring at will. Let's keep the picks and fill some of the holes around the QB. Who knows? Maybe it will improve the production of whoever is playing QB (Henson, Bledsoe or Vinny).

And we would pray that he could also play DE, DT, CB, S, and moonlight as a WR.

I find it comical that people think we should give away draft picks like it's candy while teams that have built dominant teams have done so via the draft.

brees' "comeback player of the year" award still has me puzzled. i thought you had to, FIRST, establish you had any value - BEFORE you could make a "comeback". "breakout" i could buy... but "comeback"? it must be me....

My prediction in San Diego this year....Brees proves he was a one year wonder and Phillip Rivers is starting by mid-season...

That is a big assumption and in the meantime you just gave up 2 1st rd picks. I don't know if Brees is a one year wonder or not but giving up 2 #1 it had better be a sure thing and Brees is not a sure thing.

fair enough. I'd say he's more of a sure thing than any quarterback the Cowboys have had around here since Aikman.

Maybe so but your talking 2 top picks for a guy who has had 1 good season. I'm not going to sit here and knock Brees but as I said it would have to be a sure thing before I take that risk of giving up picks. I would give up 2 #1's for Peyton Manning or Tom Brady because they have shown themselfs to be the real deal but I can't honestly say that about Brees at this stage.

So is Bledsoe :) Sorry, couldn't resist. But to answer your question I'd love to have Brees here, but not for 2 first rounders, no way!
