Anyone else impressed with the Huskers so far? Are they the best big 12 team right now?
That team plays really good defense and can run the ball and Martinez fits the old school Nebraska mentality.
I think they are a team to keep an eye on right now.
They get their toughest opponent, Texas, @ home the week after Texas plays OU also.

I'm very impressed by the job Bo Pelini has done at Nebraska. He brought his aggressive defense to the Cornhuskers and he also brought back tradition like the black shirts and has the kids believing in what they are doing. I look forward to the matchup with my Horns

I really wasn't too impressed with this team coming into the season, because of their QB situation. I thought Zac Lee was just a tad more than useless. With Suh gone, I figured they'd take a step back on defense. So I wasn't sure why they were getting ranked so highly.
But this Martinez kid looks dangerous from what little I've seen. Still not a big passing threat on that team, but he's definitely a threat with his running ability.
They dodged OU on the schedule, and their toughest road games will be at Okie State and A&M. They could definitely challenge for the title.

Texas has a bye week between OU and Nebraska. I'm sure they'll need it.

He does remind me of a lot of the typical old school QBs for Nebraska. He's a running back playing QB. I don't think he's a very strong passer at all, at this point in his development. If I were Texas, I would definitely force him to beat me throwing the ball. I would contain him and make him throw routes he is not strong with.

Everyone around here expected them to be a top 10 team this year. It all comes down to the Texas game. We find out then how they can match up. Should they win that game and the Big 12 championship game do they get a shot at the BCS title game? There are many, many folks around here who think they should.

I think both Nebraska and Oklahoma have a good chance to play in the conference title game un-defeated with the winner obviously playing in the BCS championship. It will not be an easy road for either team but that is my current expectation.

my girlfriend is a HUGE Nebraska fan and I've never really watched college but I'm being forced to now
is there any way to watch their games (apart from the nationally televised games) here in Dallas?
on their website it says a lot of them are on FSN Pay-per-view, whatever the hell that is

It's a pay-per-view channel.
You pay, then you can view.
It happens a lot here. Guys get together and split the cost. They actually end up paying far more on beer and food.

LOL. This is how I got hooked on the Huskers. My GF went to school there. I never cared about college football until last season. Martinez is an absolute threat on the running game. He ran an 81 yarder last game. If he develops an arm too, GAME OVER.
Crick will take the place of Suh, even though he was a little silent last game. I think Nebraska will go all the way. Texas is good, but they're playing them in Lincoln.
I see Nebraska beating Texas on the 16th.

They were always my favorite team growing up but the day the hired Bill Callahan I lost all interest.
The thing that made Nebraska special was their tough defense and their Power option attack.
The Canes beat the breaks off of them in the National title game and they decided they can't win with that style of football anymore.
IMO I disagree. I think you can still win with that style of football but I do feel like there needs to be more of a passing game involved with it too.
This Taylor Martinez guy is fun to watch and has some serious foot speed.

fan has been a BOliever since the Pelini Bros came back to Lincoln. Former AD Pederson should have never let him leave in the first place, although as it turned out, it was the best thing that happened to him because the recruting connections he established while being the defensive coordinator for Oklahoma and LSU have become priceless.
Taylor Martinez has shocked the Nation beyond words can describe. Just a few months ago, this kid was told that he was going to be given a " fair shot " at the QB position, but that more than likely he'd probably end up playing safety.. The only reason why he chose N was because they were the only school who was willing to do that.
Now look at him. I never thought I would see a bigger, faster, better passer version of Eric Crouch.
Although we're still far from becoming a big time contender ( like Alabama and Ohio St ), we're getting closer. The O-line is becoming a dominating unit with each game they play. The defensive backfield ( and Dallas' scouts should pay attention to couple of guys there: Rickey Thenarse and Eric Hagg ) is now THE dominant unit of the defense. The D-line is coming along, especially baby Steinkuhler, but it's going to take time, and so will the LBs.
On offense Niles Paul is a legit NFL caliber receiver. Reminds me bit of Anquan Boldin, only with more speed. I consider the 3 starting seniors on the O-line NFL caliber lineman, with DJ Jones having the most upside and Keith Williams the most ready of the three. All three should be guards in the NFL.
The one thing I will be honest about is that I think their top 3 NFL prospects: Paul, Prince Amukamara and Crick are right now a bit too overrated by Scouts inc. Paul is the better player of all three, but even he is a work in progress. He tends to drop the ball once in a while, mostly because of lack of concentration, and he hasn't had that many passes thrown to him in college. Now, the upside ? the kid is a dynamic punt and even kick off returner ( so is Thenarse, by the way ) and if he ever figures out the neuances of an NFL receiver the way Boldin did, look out. Amukamara's size, strength and speed at the CB position ( 6'1, 210 lbs ) makes scouts drool ( Revis island body clone ), but he's a converted RB, meaning he's not a " natural " cover guy. Crick should be a solid DT in a 4-3 D, but I wouldn't spend a #1 pick on him at this point. He's going to have to show more than what he's shown so far and to be honest, Steinkuhler has shown more potential than he has. Thank goodness he's only a Sophomore.

How did OU dodge them? OU plays them two years on, and two years off.
Don't open your mouth unless you know what you're talking about. Nobody's dodging anyone, unless you wanna say Nebraska is Dodging OU and Texas, since those are the two teams that have dominated the conference for the past decade. Nebraska is the team running to another conference, not OU.
And congrats to them and UT for defeating OU when OU was having it's worst season in the Stoops' era. UT was a "NC" contending team, yet got their ***** busted up and down the field by OUr defense.
OU will win the Big XII this season and I have no doubt about that. And once again, you puny little whorn fans will fall right back into the woodwork once it's all said and done, and OU has it's 7th Big XII championship since Stoops got here.

If anything, I'd do the complete opposite. I'd invite him to run and then punish him as hard as possible as often as possible. The one thing I noticed about him is that because of his inexperience, he tends to try to do too much at times and keeps the ball more than he should, instead of handing it off to the RB. As the game progresses and he gets punished more by the defense, he tends to ware out and get tired quicker than he should.
But he came from a spread out system in California, so it's not as if he doesn't know how to throw the ball:

Nebraska is leaving the Big 12 because the BIG 12 was going to leave THEM. This whole mess was started by Texas and followed by their butt kissing battered girlfriend named OU, first flirting with the Big 10 themselves and then with the Pac 10. When Nebraska asked them what was the deal and for them to commit to a long term contract, Texas and their little girlfriend's response was: " we'll get back to you ". Well, guess what ? Now they won't have anybody to " get back to ".

It's funny you say that. I've never seen a dropoff in OU fans around the state of Oklahoma. Hell, in the 90's, you'd think we were reeling off NCs year after year with the showing of pride by our faithful around these parts. I'm not just talking about Norman.
However, I remember reading that after UT's '05 Vince Young National Championship, UT's merchandise sales skyrocketed higher than any other program, but had pretty average at best numbers before that title.
Real Sooner fans always sport their colors, and are damn proud of them. Longhorns do what they do. They make stuff up and expect everyone to believe the bs they spew.
Yes, 6 Big XII titles is amazing. Too bad you can't say the same thing. The bowl losses hurt, but hey, at least we've dominated our conference and have the trophies to prove it. You don't and never will.
Also, good job on those 3, not 4, but 3 national championships in big ole high school football dynasty, Texas. Wow. 3? That's it? Talk about mass underachievers. It's not hard to figure out why all your Texas kids flip the bird to your losing state and come on up to Soonerland for trophies, rings, and glory.
I love it when UT fans try and talk down Big XII Titles. That's like poor people taking their kids to rich neighborhoods and saying things like, "Look, those people aren't really happy." Or a kid that can't have something that another kid has, and he says, "I don't want that anyway." Knowing good and well they'd do anything to have it if they could, but they can't, because they SUCK.

It's almost as if I'm arguing with a 12 year old. You bring bs. I bring truth. Truth is, OU has trophies, UT doesn't. Nebraska has sucked for a decade, and are running. It's UT's fault for starting all of this mess, however. They started the threats after last season. Everyone got worried, and two bolted.
Another great example of UT kicking up some dust just because they can, and their whining and crying sends shockwaves through the nation. Look at us!!! We're UT. We're HUGE! We can't win a title if our lives depended on it, so we're gonna flop our mouths until someone is forced to listen.

That is not indicative of the UT fan base. Any team that wins a National Championship will see increased merchandising sales. That's a reflection of fans who are not the Base of a given program, joining the band wagon. It's not indication of the opposite.

As of right now I don't see anything that would make anyone believe Texas will just walk into Lincoln and "handle" Nebraska.
Now Texas does have an amazing defense and a really good special teams but Gilbert is a little jumpy in the pocket right now and they just aren't moving the ball as well as they should.
Now you can win a lot of games with defense and special teams but does Texas have the patience to play that style of football? We'll see.
There is always the chance that things could start clicking for Texas @ some point too because they are easily the most talented team in the Conference this year but right now they are adjusting to a brand of football that they aren't used to.

I'm talking about championships in general. OU is superior to UT in both NCs, and conference titles.
By UT logic, anything that didn't happen yesterday has to be a fluke. By that I mean, our 7 NCs mean nothing because it is 2010. lol...
They may be the past, but you don't play the game just to say goodbye to yesterday. You play to win, and you win so you can say I'm better than you. You will never understand what being on top means, because you hardly ever are.
Only Notre Dame, Alabama, and Oklahoma can talk about it because only they know what being great is all about. All the rest can sit back like little children and scream "cheater" like a kid getting whooped by a friend in madden does.
I don't expect you to understand. I just expect you to underachieve, like you always do.
Arq, I just know that after the '05 season, I have never seen so many UT flags, and burnt orange painted cars in my wonderful state of Oklahoma. Of course, OU hasn't done a lot since our 5 in a row from '00 to 04 to shut that mess up either.
I just know that The University of Oklahoma is far ahead of UT and more than likely will be for quite some time. I just don't see UT ever surpassing OU in National Championships, which is what we all play for. You guys have the series lead, which is cool. I just wonder if you guys would rather have a series lead, or twice as many national championships. Personally, I love the fact that OU leads in pretty much every statistical category since the end of world war two, and has the second most national titles in all of America. UT is a top ten program, like it or not. Not a top five, but a top ten. It's a fact. Go look it up.
And Pepaw, obviously I contribute something because you continue to get your little panties in a bunch every time I post.
Dallas fans are so much fun. Good old Tom Landry must be rolling in his grave to see what his great Cowboys have become. I am a true, traditional Dallas Cowboy fan. No bandwagon here. Just a fan that wants to see Dallas do what it does best, win. Unfortunately, Dallas has become a joke. It hurts, but it is what it is.

because they are easily the most talented team in the Conference this year but right now they are adjusting to a brand of football that they aren't used to.
I hear this every year. Yet, they can't seem to hardly ever win the conference title. They always seem to get OU's sloppy seconds. By that I mean, UT can't win the Big XII unless OU is having a down year.

Yeah Callahan absolutely sucked. I hated that hire as well but I've stuck with them all along. They're my favorite. :)
Glad to see them getting back to winning more often again.
Oh, so now you're back on the 'Braska wagon, huh? Miami just ain't doin' it for ya, huh? HOW BOUT THEM COWBOYS! What about SC? Oh, wagon fail. lol. Oh well, I'm enjoying you're 0-2. Best believe I'm loving every minute of it.
Why are you on a Cowboys forum? See people like you, who come to troll, is why I wish the mods would ban people more often.
You've come here to do nothing more than be a jerk off and you shouldn't be allowed here to do so.
Oh really? No doubt? Well based off your earlier post on who Nebraska has beat then I'll ask you the same....who has OU beat?
What, exactly, about them barely getting by Air Force means you should be here puffing out your chest about how they're going to win the Big XII with no problem?
I guess waiting till they start beating some conference folks only applies when it's anyone but OU, huh?
Not surprising considering that's a typical Sooner tactic.
It's funny you say that. I've never seen a dropoff in OU fans around the state of Oklahoma. Hell, in the 90's, you'd think we were reeling off NCs year after year with the showing of pride by our faithful around these parts. I'm not just talking about Norman.
LOL!
That's the biggest crock of crap I've ever seen posted in my entire life. I've lived in Oklahoma my entire life, about an hour south of Norman, and what you just posted there is an out right lie.
During the 90's, when they couldn't do jack crap, you couldn't hardly find a single person sporting OU shirts, hats, or flying their little flags on their cars.
For YEARS you rarely saw any of that stuff and then when they won the National Championship under Stoops....BAM!!!! All the sudden it was everywhere. Almost like, all the sudden, people realized that there was a college in Norman that played football.
So, no, what you're trying to pass of there is absolute garbage.

Main reason Neb is starting to get noticed is not because of who they have played but how they have played. OU has come close to blowing games vs bad teams last one being Air Force the same could be said about the Gators play. Neb is looking sharp on offense and defense so of course people are going to start paying attention to them.

OU has all of the makings of being a bad road team. They gave up over 400 yards passing against Utah State & 350 yards rushing against Air Force. Not to mention they were outcoached in both games.
They did put a beat down on FSU but how poorly coached was FSU on defense? Blown assignment after blown assignment on the FSU defense. They weren't even contesting passes.
Also it will be interesting to see who steps up on the road outside of Murray and Broyles.
IMO, Nebraska, Texas, and OU are all in the same clump right now. Probably neither of the 3 will play for a National Title this year but they are all solid teams.
If I had to say who is the best of the 3, as of September 24, I would say Nebraska is a little ahead of both Texas and OU but I will also say the Texas defense is better than any offensive or defensive unit between all 3 teams.

I agree. At this stage the Cornhuskers have looked very good in all phases of the game. As a Texas fan I will say I'm glad we have Neb on the schedule, it will be a big test for the Horns and many of the young players on this team.

Air Force is a good team in the sense they are well coached but they don't even have as much talent as OU's 2nd string players.
OU was able to out-athlete Air Force in the end but it just shows what good coaching can do even with below average athletes.
Thats why a team like Boise State can beat anyone if they make it to the National Title game.

Yeah Texas did not look very good vs Rice either. They have alot of work ahead of them if they hope to be a BCS contender this year. I have no problem dealing with reality evidently the OU fans or should I call them North Texas since they rely on the state of Texas for their ball club can't deal with the fact that OU looks like crap:laugh2:

Can't wait for that game. If both Texas and Nebraska are undefeated than let the best team win but if Texas has 1 loss and Nebraska is undefeated i'll be rooting for the Huskers.
The thing about Texas is they easily have the most upside between all 3 teams and if it gets clicking on Offense than they will be a National Title contender but I don't think their offense will start clicking early enough in the year.
If they somehow leave Nebraska undefeated then watch out.

They are a team who can't match up athletic wise they are very small players on that team and do not get the quality players like big time program such as OU can get and the simple fact is OU looked poor vs them. If you can't deal with that then good for us not a surpise for an OU fan.

They run a pretty good scheme that can and has given better opponents trouble before. It doesn't excuse the Sooner's play but hopefully they will learn from it and execute better in the future.

I do agree with your old post up there that they've been pretty much a non-factor for a decade now. There is no denying that but I'm certainly glad to see that they've been getting the team turned around the last two years.
I wasn't sure if I'd like the hiring of Bo at first but I'm 110% sold since early last season that he is the right man for the job. So glad they hired him. It's the most excited ive been about a coach there since Tom.
