mmmk... not trying to offend the faithful... but why in the world would we sign him...
He is a STRONG SAFETY... we already have a MARQUIS strong safety...
We have suffered through three years of dual SS already with Woody and Roy...
Why on earth should we sign him should he become available? I am not hatin' on anyone... I just don't see the logic...
Wouldn't a better signing be Arturo Freeman (Miami) or Darren Sharper (Green Bay)? Both are rumored to be availalable...
Nothing against Darius... but why sign him... who are we going to convert?

I've actually been wondering the same thing... Darius is a player, no doubt about it, but he's not a real good fit with the Boys, not with Roy on the roster...

WOW! I couldn't agree more. I've been saying the same thing.
Sharper would be a perfect fit for what we need. It just amkes too much sense.

Agreed, if we go safety in FA then its got to be Dwight Smith or if cut Darren Sharper

I thought last year, was the only season we suffered as far as safety play. I personally like the thought of interchangable safeties. Both Williams and Darius have decent pass skills. Roy's off year was more a result of the absence of an equalent safety counter part, and lack of size in the front four, then any deminished play.

I liked the interchangeable Safetys.. it seemed to work good for us, or atleast i thought...

yea, but roy made his name in college as a run support SS, it pi$$es me of to see him as the deep safety with some scrub up near the line, lets get it right for once and put Roy in a position where he can take his game to a new level

I was wondering the same thing.....most of us have wanted a true FS on the team yet people are wanting Darius.
I think Darius is a good player but why do we want two SS again?
Let's get a true FS on the team opposite Roy please.

What about Hunter as FS?
He needs to improve his tackling, but did play well as a safty in college.

I think the concept of free safety and strong safety is outdated. Many teams ask both of their safeties to be interchangable. The Broncos had Kenoy Kennedy and went out and signed Lynch. The Rams are moving Pisa Tinoisamoa to safety, and they already have Archuleta. The Seahawks had a big 6'2" 215 lb. safety in Ken Hamlin, and drafted Michael Boulware in the 2nd to play safety. The Titans feature a combo of Tank Williams and LaMont Thompson, who are both in the 6'2" 220 range. The Patriots would have fielded both Harrison and Milloy as a safety tandem had Milloy agreed to restructure his salary. And, really, some of the safties that played opposite Woody like Washington and Gant in the "glory years" were better hitters than coverage guys.
I think what's more important than have a typical FS vs. SS is to have playmakers at both positions.

I've always felt he would end up there... but at this point he is an unknown... and coming off of a major knee injury...

The reason many coaches like to have a safety cover the slot in the nickel, like the Cowboys did with Woodson and Parcells did with Milloy, is because that role has to play close to the box and has run support resposibilities. If you have a nickel slot guy who can not only hold his own in pass coverage but also in run support, then you can better use your nickel package in situations like 3rd and 4 rather than sticking with your base package. That's the role I envision for Hunter, even though he struggled with it for a time in 2003.
