Clearly Texas offense has to show up for Texas to have a shot at winning. I think this game goes down to the wire. Should be a heck of a game

Have to go with OU over Texas after that dismal performance we saw last week. Is it just me or does Gilbert just look lost at times under center? Texas seemed confused a lot of times, which is unusual for a Mack Brown coached team. This is a weird year in FBS.

I think he is a kid who is still trying to grasp everything and is dealing with allot of youngsters being asked to fill some big shoes. I think they are going through a learning stage which is why I did not feel Texas would make a run at the NC this year and will have their work cut out for them to win the Big 12

Turnovers and stupid penalties were the deciding factor in that game. If Texas can correct those, then I think they can have some success. Texas' defense has played well, even in the UCLA game. They started giving up plays after they had been on the field for a very long time. Will be interesting to see what happens. OU doesn't have a powerful offense so I think there is a chance that we can see a game.

I agree. I do think OU will come out and try to get Murry going early in the game and it will be critical for Texas to shut him down early and have OU play into the strenght of the Texas defense which is their pass rush and secondary. If Murry has a big day it could be a long day

Good point, I know he is still just a Sophomore, I am just a tad surprised to see Texas and OU not as deep as they normally are. Usually Texas has 2 QB's on the bench that would start anywhere else and a stable of WR's that any other team would kill for. OU seems to have RB's hiding behind every tree as well. Since I do live in that part of the country, has recruiting become an issue for these schools or is this just a normal cycle?

Well Colt had some struggles early on as well. It was not as if Texas won the big 12 each season he was here. As for Gilbert he was rated very high in the nation coming out of high school and has some good talent. Recruiting really is not an issue for Texas or OU but it is not that uncommon for teams to go through some bumps in the road as key players leave and unproven guys are asked to step in

I understand that, and maybe this question doesn't pertain as much to Texas as it does to OU, but it seems like OU has been in a slump for some time. I do not follow either team week in and week out so I could be clearly off the mark which is why I asked for input from someone who is more familiar with the teams.

I think Texas has had the edge on OU for the last 2 years but it has been close. Right now OU has had their struggles but have pulled through and this weekend’s game will go a long way in determining who this year’s Big 12 South winner will be. Unless both start playing much better it may not make a difference given how Nebraska is playing. But a lot can happen within a season

I wouldn't say slump. OU had a down year last season, but won the conference title the previous 3 years in a row. 6 this past decade.

Our BCS woes are hard to deal with. OU has been very successful this decade, but the BCS losses always leave a bad taste.

Both OU and UT have had a great decade.

That's a fair statement, maybe what I am talking about is the fear factor that use to be involved when OU or Nebraska or Texas rolled into town. I remember when OSU beating OU was a major upset and cause for suicide watches all throughout Norman. It hasn't been that way in quite some time, maybe it isn't just OU and Texas, perhaps there isn't a clear powerhouse left in college football like there use to be.

OSU hasn't beaten OU since '02, and they haven't defeated UT in I believe an entire decade.

It would suck here in Norman if we ever lose to OSU. Even if we've won that game like 86 out of the last 100 times, which we have. It's hardly a rivalry. Lopsided for sure.

When OU is up, as they were in '08, they are feared, as they became the highest scoring offense in all of history in CFB. UT beat us, and then we went on a major roll. We were feared from 2000 to 2003 also. You know you have to be on top of your game anytime the Sooners or Horns roll into town. If you're not, you'll get rolled. You saw it in the Fiesta Bowl as you guys embarrassed us. Can't forget that we woke up and ran like 35 unanswered points up all in one half to make a huge comeback. Fell short, all credit to the new monster in town, Boise State.

Any team coming into Norman has to be a little bit afraid, or at least have some serious respect. When you step on that field and realize that OU has only lost twice on that field since 2000, you realize the odds are stacked against you in a serious way.

I promise you this, OU and UT are both a year away. Next year, and the year after that, both teams will be feared.

And lol at the guy who said he'll be napping through the RRR. Sounds like someone who knows they aren't gonna get to see what they want to see. So they're ready to concede. That's how I like it. Go to bed and sleep through your worst nightmare, which is a little Sooner dominance.

I'm not counting the Boise victory over OU in my assessment at all, rather I am comparing the Big 12 to to the Big-8, back when Nebraska would rush for 600 yards, Notre Dame could actually field a team, and Florida State and Miami were dominant. It seemed that each year you could pencil in the top 10 with little variance, it has changed quite a bit since then. Bama is re-surging, USC is on the decline, OU and UT are not near as feared as they once were, my question is directed more to what is responsible for that shift. This is in no way a slam on OU or UT programs, they have a long tradition of excellence, but no team in the country seems to have a run of the success that these teams had in the 80's and 90's.

Is the High School athlete pool that much bigger? Is the human race evolving through genetics or science and creating better athletes and more of them, or are other schools able to recruit more effectively away from these traditionally powerhouse football programs?

I agree that that the RRR is a huge game that should never be slept through. It is the biggest game of the year for both schools, for two rival programs that share no love for each other. It is probably the only game of the year that I actually watch of each school all year. I enjoy it every year.

Straight up answer to your question. Scholarships. Schools like OU, UT, Miami, etc. had stars riding the bench because we all had so many schollies. Now, under new NCAA rules, each team has I believe 85. I'm not sure the number, but OU used to have well over 100 ballplayers on full ride. Not all schools could afford that, therefore teams like OU dominated.

I'm a firm believer that if you earn it on the field throughout history, then you deserve to spend the money you've earned. Meaning, I like it how it was. And Boise State is fighting to become the elite. They are in my book, and are doing it on the field.

But yeah, to answer your question straight up, parity has taken over because everyone gets the same amount of schollies.

I was not aware that the number of scholarships that the schools could offer had changed. That def explains why the parity exists. Thanks for the explanation, I have always wondered how the other schools caught up.

The evidence is OBVIOUS. The steller offense of the Horns is JUGGERNAUTEROUS.

I think it really depends on execution. The problem with Texas has not been their inability to make things happen on offense. Their problem has been execution. They just have continued to shoot themselves in the foot with penalties or turnovers and it's really hurt their offensive. Now, I'm not saying that I expect them to solve these problems because they are playing OU. However, if they do, they can score IMO.

To be honest Dallas, OU is due and I've really not seen the kind of development from this team, at this stage, that would make me say I favor Texas over OU tomorrow. I actually think OU will probably win.

However, it would not shock me if Texas did win. I'm not a believer in your QB. Texas could win that game.

Agreed. It's usually more like a 100 arrests made the night before a typical RRS. ;)

Stupid Longhorns' loss last week cost me the chance to watch today's game live on a major network - I can't remember the last time that happened.

It doesn't matter much, though. This will be the first RRS that I won't be watching with my dad (a HUGE Texas fan), so that kind of lets the air out of the sails for me.

Regardless and in spite of everything, OU looks the better team today but an argument could be made that Texas lost to UCLA because of "forward looking" and not taking them too seriously. Of course they could in fact be as bad as they appeared to be in their loss last weekend and wind up getting their doors blown off by the Sooners.

We'll see...

BTW, Dallas, good luck today and enjoy the game.

If, (and that's a BIG "if"), Texas continues to struggle with Gilbert at the helm, I'd like to see Davis put Case McCoy in at qb (Colt's younger brother). Gilbert may have the prototypical size for an NFL quarterback, but he's way too slow athletically and with his decision making abilities.

From Oklahoma's perspective, why don't they ever run a screen to Murray though? You got an aggressive Texas front 4 and an open field threat in Murray...why not try that.

And just as I typed that, they run a play action roll out to Murray and they get a big gain.

I think Gilbert had a decent day today IMO. But he must start reading defenses better, releasing the ball when the pocket collapses, and must improve on accuracy. But he is getting no help from an incompetent offensive coordinator, a bad offensive line, no running game, WR that can't catch nor break away from the defenders. He is asked to do to much in an offense he has never ran.

he needs to be smart, I'm going to say at least 7 times he threw short passes on 3rd and 5 or more. he also needs to learn how to throw receivers open rather than throwing to the open receiver cause our receivers are not getting open on their own

Part of that is on the receivers too. They have to know where the first down is at. Kirkendoll and the tight end especially. 3rd and 5 and you run a 3 yard curl or a 3 yard out is not getting the job done. I do agree with you on your second point though.

Well, he was quite the safety before Parcells implemented the 34. Roy was never good at defending the pass. Never. He did what he was supposed to do in the 43, which is blitz, stop the run, and cover the middle.

You guys changed to the 34, and you'd think you'd be smart enough to understand that Roy just wasn't a good fit for that style of D. Instead, you just bust his balls because you have absolutely no clue what you're talking about.
