Some highlights of his most recent newsletter:

Paul Littleton from Bristol (http://topics.dallasnews.com/topic/Bristol), Va. wonders, " Why do the Cowboys never throw the ball deep or at least try? Is it the scheme, the play calls, or is it the decision-making of Tony Romo (http://topics.dallasnews.com/topic/Tony_Romo)? It seems to me all we have done is to compress the field and make the job of opposing defenses easier."
TAYLOR : You have to protect long enough to let Romo get a seven-step drop. You certainly didn't have confidence they could do that in the first two games. They took a couple of shots deep Sunday. If the protection holds up, they'll take more shots. That said, Dez Bryant (http://topics.dallasnews.com/topic/Dez_Bryant) and Miles Austin (http://topics.dallasnews.com/topic/Miles_Austin) are strong enough and fast enough to turn short passes into long gains.

David Hughes (http://topics.dallasnews.com/topic/David_Hughes) asks, "If the poor play of Tony Romo had continued, would the Cowboys have considered a change at quarterback?"
TAYLOR : Are you serious? Do you really want Jon Kitna (http://topics.dallasnews.com/topic/Jon_Kitna) to start? Maybe the Cowboys could pick up Trent Edwards (http://topics.dallasnews.com/topic/Trent_Edwards) off waivers and start him? At worst, Romo was average the first two games compared to most quarterbacks. He was awful based on the standard of an elite quarterback that he has set for himself.

But however you slice, dice it or chop it up, he's among the best quarterbacks in the league. If you have a better option, fine. If not - and they don't - then a thousand times, no.

Romo was far from an average qb the first two games, and he wasn't awful by any standard. But I get that this is JJT trying to play nice.

I think we don't go deep much because we're putting a premium on avoiding 3rd downs and on keeping the ones we do have manageable. It's pretty rare that a game situation gives us a down to throwaway by going deep.

It astonishes me that someone can both care enough about the game to call into or write into a local radio station to talk about it, and still no *so* little as to not recognize what a good player our QB is. I mean, how can you be that disconnected with reality and still be an otherwise normally-functioning person? And how many Cowboy fans share this opinion? It's boggling.

Romo is a very good QB, for an undrafted free agent he's done a tremendous job.

A lot of fans base their opinions entirely off the opinions of a handful of national media people. They don't really understand the game enough to analyze it themselves.

Romo is one of the top QBs in the NFL today. Frankly, I believe by the time he hangs up his jersey, he will be one of the best of all time--including at least 2 SB rings to his credit. And no one am I a homer. I wasn't born in Texas, nor do I have any relatives/friends there. I used to live in DC area where I became a Cowboy fan back in the 70s when Roger was our QB. I've watched many other QBs over the years & certainly have made it a point to watch Romo as often as I get the chance, living down here in the Tampa area. Drafted or not drafted, Romo is a top QB and the Cowboys are darn lucky to have him,

Does he have average games and make mistakes. You bet, but show me an NFL starting QB who hasn't. Don't get me wrong, Romo's no Peyton Manning, but then no other QB is Manning either, including Eli. But I'd take Romo over any other QB in the NFL except maybe Brady, but only because Brady has 3 SB wins but he and the Pats won't get anymore. But I certainly take Romo over that jerk in San Diego and the "he hasn't won anything yet" QB in Green Bay.

Romo simply faces excessive criticism cause he's the Dallas QB which makes him the highest profile player in the NFL. Romo will only get the credit he deserves when we win (and that means the entire cowboy team) the SB. But that you can also bet a lot of anti cowboy fans will claim any QB could have taken the Cowboys to the SB and won. Well the same could be said for any other starting QB in the NFL when they won the SB.

Because Dallas is a stupid team prone to drive killing penalties and mistakes, so any defensive coordinator with two brain cells to rub together is going to play the safeties far back, keep everything in front of them, take away the big play and force Dallas to drive it on them with 8-12 play drives without shooting themselves in the foot.

If Romo forces the ball into deep safety coverage, these same bozos will be the ones saying "Same old gunslinging Romo, trying to force something that isn't there."
