Goal-line stands like the one the Dallas Cowboys had in the fourth quarter in Houston last weekend can galvanize a team. Just ask the 2007 New York Giants.
When the Giants upset undefeated New England in Super Bowl XLII, conventional wisdom held that New York coach Tom Coughlin's decision to play the starters in the regular-season finale against the Patriots was the club's turning point moment.
While there is no denying the 38-35 loss gave the Giants the momentum to record three-straight improbable road playoff wins en route to the Super Bowl, the game that placed New York on a championship path actually occurred in Week 3.
The Giants were in danger of falling into an 0-3 hole after home-standing Washington gained a first-and-goal at the 1 with 58 seconds left in the game.
Four plays later, the defense sprinted off the field, celebrating a 24-17 win over the Redskins.
“Amazing way to win a game,” Giants quarterback Eli Manning said afterward.
The Cowboys' goal-line stand against the Texans wasn't as dramatic, but it just might have saved their season. Like New York three seasons ago, Dallas was in danger of going 0-3 until its defense rode to the rescue against the Texans and their top-rated offense.
Early in the fourth quarter, with Dallas leading 17-3, Gerald Sensabaugh hauled down Houston tight end Owen Daniels at the 1. Four plays later, the Texans threw in the towel and kicked a field goal.
