Cowboys Coaching: Should Jason Garrett Be Given A Chance?

by Dave Halprin on Nov 4, 2010 12:01 PM CDT

I suppose it's inevitable. Whenever our beloved Dallas Cowboys hit the skids, we get hammered by the press and other fans, and they enjoy doing it. That's the price we pay for being the most-popular franchise in the NFL, and one of the biggest in the world. So it is, we are the subject of articles like this. But there was an interesting point brought up that was ripe for discussion.

In a word - YES

"Joke" offenses don't get 380 yards/game. "Joke" offenses don't control time of possession. What Garrett has is a joke offensive line.

Garrett's not perfect, and I think he still has maturing to do, but the same feelings existed for Tomlin, Harbaugh, and Payton when they became head coaches. I mean seriously, what was there about Harbaugh that made you think the guy would be a good head coach. Because he had really good special teams? So did Joe Avezzano. A lot of coaches have good special teams. Doesn't mean the special teams coach would be a good head coach. A lot of great assistants/coordinators have made horrible head coaches.

Doesn't mean Garrett will be a good head coach. But I think he would be.

Nooooooo.

Jason Garrett is as much, if not a bigger problem than Wade.

This is still a very talented team and if they somehow end the season winning a couple of crucial game, then Jerry is dumb enough to give him an extension as HC for next year.

We need red as far away from Dallas in '11 as possible. I'd hope we don't take that chance.

I'll give him credit for moving the ball so well with a piss poor OL. But he o's the offensive coordinator, he shouldve been screaming for help with that area of his offense if it was in such bad shape.

OKay your credit to a guy, on the first drive of the first game of the year stopped our offense while it was just getting ready to click and head down the field and he calles that *bleeping bleeping* sling play to the WR for no gain. TWICE!!!!!!!!!! He keeps using a play that doesnt work and this is the guy you want?

If you want Garrett as HC you better get a heck of a OC that wont listen to him.

So sucking as an OC is him earning it?? Heck, Campo sucks...he's earned it too then!! He's double earned it so that trumps JG.

It's not the play calling that is hurting this team, oh No, its the players that don't execute, miss blocks and drops for TD's and first down drops,
Miles catches the TD and other plays left on the field insted of the scoreboard, we would not be having this thread

One other thing, the truth is, until the players start making plays it not going to change, it's so ez to blame coaches and owners for bad play, but it the player that make plays or in this case does not. until they do, we will not win no matter who is coaching, this isn't HS or college football, where you can just sit or cut a player for the season, too much is involved...
Jimmy found that out in Miami, thats why he could win there, FA has forever change the game like it or not...

No upside to keeping Wade, no downside to making Garrett HC, so yes.

So....more of the same isn't a downside??

You don't know that it'll be more of the same. Garrett could be good. We won't know until we find out, though. Let's do it for the rest of this throwaway year before we make any more mistakes.

And no, more of the same isn't a downside. It's a wash.

If Jerry thought he could do it, and was going to be his next HC, he would have already pulled the trigger on this deal.

That says enough to me. The problem with this team has been more on the offensive side of the ball then the defense!

The only stat that counts is WINS!

Garrett shouldn't be given a chance. He should be given a one-way airplane ticket to the Pop Warner Little League field in Pango Pango.

We're 1-6....that IS a downside. We need to clean house and bring in some good coaches who don't coddle the players and let them get away with "murder". Or at least hold them accountable for mistakes and unprofessionalism. When there's a mess, you don't promote someone from within the mess to fix it. It's tainted. It's like promoting the poodle to HC all over again. You fire all the maids and bring in a real cleaning crew.

So if it's the players' fault for not executing properly, why keep calling the type plays that result in failure?

If I know my back doesn't have the speed to reach the corner, why call a sweep?

That, my friend, is on the coach.

give me a break...when Garrett goes 9 seasons of being HC and only winning ONE playoff game...then we can lump him into being as big as joke as Wade....until then...we simply dont know.
