IRVING -- The play of first-year free safety Alan Ball is not what's wrong with the Dallas Cowboys' crumbling defense.
The problems are bigger and deeper than Ball's disappointing play.
He is an example of things not working out like the Cowboys hoped or planned.
One year after batting 1.000 with the decisions to jettison aging Greg Ellis and Anthony Henry for younger players such as Anthony Spencer and Mike Jenkins at linebacker and cornerback, respectively, the Cowboys went back to the well in cutting Ken Hamlin and replacing him with the unproven Ball.
Coach Wade Phillips confidently said last summer he was right then and "I think we're right in this case also."
Secondary coach Dave Campo chimed in that Ball was "a ball hawk" and "I feel very good about him."
The Cowboys were certain that Ball would be an improvement over Hamlin, who was limited in pass coverage and made few plays at free safety.
