Ok..I have heard the PC of Bledsoe's signing now several times.
Other than the expected comments from the player..I was left with several impressions from the owner that hints at things to come.
If JJ has finally decided (rightfully) that it's smarter to try to win now while he has Parcells and the cap and draft picks to pursue it..
..and the signing of Bledsoe allows the Cowboys to address the problems on defense..
..doesn't that pretty much negate the switch to the 3-4..?
At least as our base defense..?
If the Cowboys want to win now, it seems that you can't rebuild the defense into a 3-4 in just two years. And make it a top defense required to take a team to a SB possibly.
I just don't think there is time. There is not enough already in place to do it and I don't think we can really count on hitting on every FA and rookie we get to play the 3-4 well enough to really be competitive this year or even next year.
Too many things have to fall in place for that to happen. Not only do we have to have starters to play it well, but backups must be found to also fill in when injures inevitably happen.
So if we are going to win now..doesn't that mean we are going to keep our present defense and try to add players to beef it up so the schemes don't have to be changed and we can have continuity on defense..?
If we have to re-invent the wheel on defense, how does that coincide with the offense with Bledsoe and the Win-Now Mantra we are starting to see..?
It would seem that doing that would negate any improvement on offense as the defense will be having growing pains galore in a move to 3-4.
I think we are blowing smoke on the move to 3-4 at this point in order to find the DT/DE/CB/FS we are REALLY looking for to fix our 4-3 defense. And if you see how many of the reported players we were interested in for a 3-4 defense are being franchised by their respective teams..
..that further convinces me we stay with a revamped 4-3 in FA and the draft and blow out the defensive side of the ball and rebuild it, staying with the same schemes but with better players.
That's the only explanation I can see in what's coming. Anything else doesn't make any sense. If both BP and Bledsoe have this 2 year window to putup or shutup with getting us winning again, that's not much time if we are replacing 7-9 starters on defense and expecting to be competitve in '05.
It's always possible that regardless of the players we get, the 3-4 can be a change-up defense at times. But our base defense..?
Anybody got other ideas..?
