Top three story lines
New man in charge. In-season coaching moves are rare. The 1-7 Cowboys are trying to salvage something, which is why Wade Phillips is out and offensive coordinator Jason Garrett is in on an interim basis.
You again. This is the second time in four weeks that the Giants and Cowboys square off.
Return to sender. One of the Giants’ most glaring problems is their return game, which was stagnant with Darius Reynaud as the kickoff and punt returner.
Three key Giants
DE Chris Canty. After four years with the Cowboys, Canty joined the Giants last season but struggled through injuries. Now healthy, he is playing at a high level and is a big reason the Giants allow only 80.9 rushing yards per game.
OL Shawn Andrews. With David Diehl out for several weeks with hip and hamstring injuries, Andrews moves in at left tackle, a position he had never played until last week in Seattle.
P Matt Dodge. The last time these teams met, Dodge sent a 69-yard punt that Dez Bryant returned 93 yards for a touchdown.
Three key Cowboys
NT Jay Ratliff. He usually gives the Giants fits and will try to take advantage of some uncertainty with the Giants’ center situation.
RB Felix Jones. The Giants are difficult to run on, but the Cowboys have to try because they can’t rely on a steady diet of Jon Kitna against the Giants’ pass rush.
TE Jason Witten. He caught nine passes for 95 yards and a touchdown the first time these teams met and seems to be the best option in the passing game, given that the Giants have quality starting cornerbacks in Corey Webster and Terrell Thomas.
Bottom line
Winners of five straight, the Giants return home, where they haven’t always shown the paying customers their best football. The Cowboys in the first meeting forced five turnovers, and that’s the ticket to pulling off an upset.
Prediction: Giants 31, Cowboys 20.
