Henson won't concede job to Bledsoe

By Jennifer Floyd Engel

Star-Telegram Staff Writer

IRVING - Drew Henson is neither surprised nor angry that the Cowboys signed Drew Bledsoe, but he is not ready to concede the starting quarterback job, either.

The second-year quarterback told the Star-Telegram on Thursday that he realized the Cowboys were going to sign a veteran, but admitted to being slightly surprised when Bledsoe said Cowboys coach Bill Parcells had told him Bledsoe would be the starter.

"Maybe Bill told him that, and he probably did. I don't put that much stock in it," Henson said. "I'm going to go out and do what I've always done -- get reps when I can, play as hard as I can and compete."

The Cowboys traded for Henson last season hoping the former baseball player could be their future starting quarterback. He played in two games last season, including a start against Chicago on Thanksgiving.

You're not buying into the program, you're publicly questioning Parcells, you're history. We don't need guys here who 'don't get it.' Parcells knew what he was doing when he kept you on the bench with that attitude problem.

Henson definitely sounds like he has a bit of fire in him and will TRY to give Bledsoe a fight in camp.

Problem I see here is that BP is a win now guy and a young QB, as we've seen with hin so far, doesnt give him the best chance to win. Thats my view on his mentality not my opinion.

I think if we get a legit #1 receiver, go after McKenzie and sure up the line Bledsoe produces in our scheme

I guess perception is truly a personal thing. As I read Henson's statement I thought, "This guy really has his head on straight". As I see it, he didn't question Bill, he simply stated that he didn't put much stock into Bill possibly starting Bledsoe. I think he was RIGHT to say that. After all, what would it say about Henson if he just said, "Well, I guess they brought in a better QB so I'll just ride the pine another year or two"? As a coach, I'd be thrilled with his response.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. You think his attitude stinks but I think it is great.

LA...if you read the article, Jenn NEVER says she thinks Henson will start. She is merely the messenger here. The article clearly points out that Henson is the one who believes he can win the starting job.

Personally, I'd rather have a backup QB who believes in his abilities enough to not concede the starting job than one who says something like, "Now with Bledsoe here, I can just sit back and learn."

The more that I think about this situation, the more that I become irritated. Drew Henson will be 27 years old which means that we sould find out as soon as possible where he stands as our future quarterback. I understand that Slim Bill wants to win and win now. However, if he is doing that at the cost of our future then someone has to step in. Hopefully once the preseason starts the competition will be fair and not Bledsoe oriented. I would hate to think that Billy is going to start Bledsoe with the intention that he will go out a winner. That would definitely suck.

Thanks for pointing that out, I know Drew is supposed to be about 3 years younger than Brady and Brady turned 27 last year or will turn 27 this year?

So that means Henson is 24 right now or will turn 25 this year.

Heck yeah Cbz40! Don't get me wrong, I've liked the signing of Drew Bledsoe from the start, but I am more than pulling for Drew Henson to play his *** off and take over as the starter in Dallas, whenever that is.

And I am not sure about some of you who are questioning Henson's comments. Acting as if Henson just questioned Bill. Actually, that is quite a hoot to even think that. Ya gotta give props to the kid (Henson), he's a competitor. And he did nothing wrong.

In fact, Bill and Jerry most definitely wanna see some fire out of Henson. It was probably MORE OF A MOTIVATIONAL TACTIC than anything ... what Bill Parcells said. And Bill got what he wanted out of his young QB. A response. Now it's time to produce.

GO COWBOYS!

Thats an interesting way to look at it. Is Bill testing out Henson by saying that to Bledsoe that he is a starter? I doubt it, but I think he must be happy with the way both Henson and Romo reacted. Especially Henson, since he is saying ain't no way Bledsoe is going to get the starting job that easily.

We shall see about that, but I have my doubts about Bill's intentions. I dont see him giving Henson or Romo too much of a chance unless Bledsoe stinks it up, which is unlikely to happen. Bledsoe might be just adequate enough to keep him as starter.

If indeed Bill was testing the young guys, yes he should be proud of the way they reacted.

I dont't look for either Henson or Romo to see much action at all which has been my main concern. We can only hope we can get some substantial leads where they can at least do some mop up work.

Give Bledsoe some blocking he can be a better than average QB for us.......at least he's an upgrade over Vinny.
