While his work on ABC’s Monday Night Football helped re-create the NFL as prime-time spectacle, Don Meredith, the rapier-witted rapscallion from Mount Vernon who died Sunday at age 72, will be remembered for a less-is-more style that has been overwhelmed — and not necessarily for the better — by today’s high-definition, high-detailed, multi-platform model.

Can you, for example, possibly envision Jeff and Hazel Meredith’s baby boy chattering about seven men in the box, using a Telestrator to diagram the inner workings of a Tampa Cover 2 defense or exchanging small talk about your neighbor’s fantasy football team?

“Oh, my god, no,” said Verne Lundquist, the veteran broadcaster who knew Meredith first as the quarterback of the Next Year’s Champions-era Dallas Cowboys and then as Howard Cosell’s slower-talking, quicker-witted foil on ABC Sports for 12 years in the 1970s and ’80s.
