TAMPA - For the second time in two years, Bucs defensive back Dwight Smith has been arrested on a weapons charge.

Smith was arrested for aggravated assault with a weapon this morning after allegedly pulling out a BB-type gun when a group of teen-agers approached his car at a McDonald's drive-thru at North Dale Blvd. and Dale Mabry Hwy. The incident occured at 4 a.m.

Hillsborough County Sheriff's spokesperson Debbie Carter said that after the teens recognized Smith and tried to talk to him, Smith pulled the weapon and another man in the car, David Roston, got out and punched Trevor Boyce in the face after an exchange of words.

Sheriff's deputies searched Smith's car and found the gun, Carter said. They arrested Roston for battery.

Smith, who has started all 16 games for the Bucs in each of the last two seasons, pleaded guilty in August 2003 to a misdemeanor charge of improperly displaying a firearm at another motorist.

That incident occured in April 2003, when Smith allegedly brandished a handgun at another motorist while at a traffic light. He was sentenced to one year's probation and fined $225 for the charge.

Smith was also was ordered to take anger management counseling and complete 25 hours of community service in a plea agreement with prosecutors in Pinellas County.

Smith has played both cornerback and safety for Tampa Bay and has made 12 interceptions over the last three seasons. He started at strong safety for the Bucs last year but is thought to be seeking a more lucrative deal as a cornerback for the 2005 season. Smith was taken to Orient Road Jail and was expected to be released on bond.

Maybe he can get a personal services contract with the Daisy BB gun company.

I was hoping the Cowboys would make a serious run at Dwight but I'm not so sure they'll have any interest after this. Talk about horrible timing!!

it was a bb gun! it's not gonna matter to a single team that he pointed a bb gun at someone.heck, mcnair got a dwi and had a real gun in his car and nothing became of it.this is nothing

If Parcells will take a chance on a heap of garbage like Leo Carson then he should take a chance with Dwight Smith as well.

At 4am in the morning, I'd be a little wary of a group of anybody approaching my car. Kids or not. Too much stuff happens at that time of night to take anything lightly. And those kids should've had their butt at home. That kid wouldn't have gotten knocked the f*** out if he had been.

Exactly. I wouldn't trust a bunch of punks coming up to my car at 4 AM either.

Didn't Parcells cut Keith Davis just for being out at a club and getting hit by a stray bullet?

He cut Davis moreso because he did exactly what Parcells said not to do the minute he got here, which is hang out in bad places and situations.

It was a message cut to show everyone on the team that he meant what he said.

Don't you think these teams wish they could just put some of these guys on lock-down over the offseason to keep their feeble, gun-toting, drug-taking, no-account butts out of jail? I'd hate to be the holder of this guy's contract and be forced to deal with all the crap because he can't handle being away from structure for a month or two—especially if I were trying to get some kind of value out of a trade.

Not ones that are on the verge of FA and hoping to convince a future employer to pay them millions of $$.

Dumb, Very Dumb. I don't like dumb players. Guess that means I don't like a lot of players, doesn't it? :)

You know Smith sounds like someone we could really use, if his head is screwed on correctly. Here's an interesting excerpt from an old article on Smith...
************************************************** ****
Smith has developed into a key player for the Buccaneers over his four season, making the Buccaneers feel fortunate that they got him in that quietly important third round. For now, Smith is going to keep doing things both on and off the field the only way he knows how.

“On the field I’m a wild ride - you might see me in arguments with other teams and stuff like that,” said Smith. “Off the field, I’m more of a calm person. I don’t get into too much – I’m pretty laid back.”

As a player Smith is definitely someone you'd want wearing the star on his helmet. He's a playmaker, point blank. Even though this off the field stuff isn't quite as bad as what other players have done, you'd still rather your players steered clear of any kind of controversy or legal issues. That said, I hope BP and JJ still give him a long hard look in FA.

aw, ya beat me to it!

i was gonna say good thing switzer's not here or smith would be a done deal. he could carry his and barry's sidearms as they boarded the team plane. kinda like the multi-purpose players BP likes.

I believe he was referring more to the fact that the media will put anything the Cowboys do in the worst possible light, rather than calling out any players. He wasn't calling out Rolle or Smith, just the media portrayal of everything Cowboys related. The Boys are still battling those ghosts of the 90s.

I know, I was just throwing out another example of the headline if the 'boys signed Rolle. I was just adding an extra comment. My point was simply, that most of these guys have skeletons in their closets and there's nothing we can really do about it.

My sentiments exactly. A man don't need to be slappin his woman around but a woman needs to remember if she hits like a man she gets hit like a man. How bout everyone just love each other and lets watch someone kill a qb. :D

On a positive note, We have to protect the house.
Smith can after Interceptions pull out a pellet gun! the marketing opportunities are endless.
