Bucs Must Put On Thinking Cap
Another player who has flourished in the Bucs' system is defensive end Simeon Rice. He has led the team in sacks since arriving as a free agent in 2001, and he's being paid accordingly. Rice's cap figure for the 2005 season is a team-high $10.7 million, but Allen denied a suggestion by Rice's agent, Tom Condon, that Rice could be among the players cut.
``Simeon Rice has a $10 million-and-change cap number on him,'' Condon told Kansas City's KCSP radio. ``They [the Bucs] can't handle that number. They're going to have to release him; [or] they're going to have to redo his contract. They definitely have to do something with him. His cap number is so large now that it's really difficult for Tampa to handle him and they have a lot of other needs.''
Condon told The Tampa Tribune on Monday that the Bucs also have the option of ``carrying'' Rice's $10.7 million cap figure and Allen strongly suggested that is what the Bucs will do. ``We have a few contracts that have been signed that we have to live with and hope that we get some outstanding performances out of the players,'' Allen said. ``[Rice's] is one of them.''

I wonder if they could convince Rice to take a huge pay-cut and come to Dallas. My pitch would be that in Zimmy's system he won't get double digit sacks and thus should be paid less. :)

The Bucs d is getting on, and there team is in cap hell, restructure here restructure there, theres no way they can keep that cap hit at 10 mill and sign all the players they want. I dont see him to happy to restructure too, last year he wasnt to happy with Gruden.
I would go after this guy.

Sounds to me that he isn't going anywhere.
Sounds to me that he isn't going anywhere.
Same here.
I spoke with the resident Bucs expert that I work with and he said they wouldn't realize a cap savings if they cut him because of the huge deal they signed him to last year.
I wish these writers would put some thought into these scenarios.

Actually Derrick Brooks is a more likely candidate at 9mil or so. He's 31 or 32 and while he's a good player, they don't think he's worth that.

They're saying Brooks will restructure so he can retire a Buc.

I know that that's the plan. But I've also read he's not interested in a pay cut either. So if they can't come to terms, he's just as likely to be outta there, even though they don't want the PR disaster they had with John Lynch last year.

The Bucs are close to 12 Mil over the cap as of this morning, they've got a lot of work to do today and it wouldn't surprise me to see one or the other of Brooks or Rice let go. That said, Dallas should be all over Rice should he become available.

I agree or Brooks who ever gets released, if they think they can keep both at a hit of close to 20 mill on 2 players without restructuring, I have some swamp land in east Tampa Bay for sale.

How old is Rice ?
30, but with him, I don't think it'd matter. He's a stud. Averages double-digit sacks throughout his career. Unfortunately, TB is not gonna let him go anywhere.

It wouldn't matter WG, he is still on top of his game. His production fell off early last season when he had to make the adjustment to not having Sapp on the line but he regained form and came on strong at the end of the season. He'll be in a Buc uniform next year I'm afraid to say.

We can dream...but I imagine the alarm clock will go off before we finish the dream. :(
