I believe Adam said it was close to 2.8 million.

And if we cut Coakley, for example, our cap space will go up by only $2,535,334 (instead of $2,885,334) because a $305,000 player will move into the top 51.

This was off another board, a post made by adam about the cap situation.

Cutting Coakley adds $2,535,334 to our cap room, giving us about $18,799,696 of cap room.

Coakley's dead money will be $2,885,334 less than what he would have cost ($1,833,332 cap number instead of $4,718,666), but releasing him adds another $305,000 player to our top 51.

Coakley would have counted 4+ million dollars on next year's cap if he had stayed on. So yeah, we saved.

Shouldn't you be doing other things than being on this board Adam, like, you know, talking to agents and getting ready to submit contracts tomorrow.

Even if cutting Coakley was better for the team, then why doesn't it feel so good in my stomach right now?

Maybe because even though he was not the biggest, the best or any other adjective you would like to use...he was a player that gave it his all and was a great guy on and off the field.

Then again it could just be gas. :D

IRVING - The Dallas Cowboys cut linebacker Dexter Coakley on Tuesday.

Coakley, an eight-year veteran and three-time Pro Bowler, was due a $500,000 bonus Tuesday, and his salary would have cost the Cowboys $4.7 million against the salary cap.

A former third-round draft pick by the Cowboys in 1997, Coakley was third on the team in tackles with 91 despite sharing time with Bradie James. Coakley had his streak of seven seasons with 100 or more tackles end in 2004. His 1,046 career tackles rank fourth among the Cowboys' all-time tackle leaders.

The same thing happened to me when they cut Emmitt, forced Troy to retire or be cut, etc. While personally, you hate the decision, from a team/business standpoint, it's the best decision.

Unlike a lot of people here, I like Coakley but he just does not fit the style of defense Parcells wants. I believe that you should coach who you have when you have them, but when opportunity arises where you can get what you want, you should do it .. and right now, the Cowboys need bigger, stronger linebackers and money to revamp other needed defensive positions.

The only thing I ever hated about Coakley was his inept ability to catch an interception that hits him in the hands. He was a team player, hard-worker, etc. .. someone to be respected as a football player .. but times change, coaches change, defense styles change, and players age. All of this leads to where we are today.

This is the part of the game that really sucks. I was a huge Coakley fan! Not because he was the best that played or he did things that really made him stand out, but because he gave 110% when he played. I for one am hoping that he resigns with the team at a cheaper cost, but I doubt it.

I had a typo when I did this. I added $350,000 instead of $305,000. So after cutting Coakley (and before signing Ferguson, Scott, Carson, and/or Henry), we had $18,844,696 of cap room.
