They finally got the first full practices in at the Shrine all-star game after Monday's deluge. There were mixed reviews overall today. I think the overall talent pool is superior to last year and one one scout I talked with agreed, but a second disagreed strongly. I'll gauge this some more as Saturday game time rolls around.
<>No player is getting more scrutiny in Orlando that North Carolina DT Marvin Austin. For the most part, Austin, who hasn't played a down in anger in over a year after being suspended this fall for receiving improper benefits, was OK overall, but my notes indicated that he did a lot better in drills, when he knew where the ball was going, than he was in the scrimmage. But Austin held up well enough on the interior for a guy who hasn't played in pads at all for five months.
Best QB was Scott Tolzein of Wisconsin who read the field well and worked through his progressions. He also was accurate with throws and had more zip than anyone else on the ball. On the other hand, any comparisons of Delaware QB Pat Devlin to Joe Flacco have been doused at the Shrine week so far. Besides coming in a lot shorter than advertised (6-3, 225), Devlin was erratic with his throws and easily bothered in the pocket on the first day of full practice..
<>
Unheralded UCLA DT David Carter was monster in scrimmage and unblockable in drills. The former Bruin has a great combination of quickness and strength. It may have been the most impressive practice session I have ever seen, including those at the Senior Bowl.
Another DT that helped himself today was Terrel McClain of South Florida. He is a wide-body who packs a punch and can move for a big man. Indeed, McClain reminds me a lot of Torrell Troup of UCF who came on strong in his senior season last fall and eventually was a second rounbd pick by Buffalo. Got a chance to speak with former USF head coach Jim Leavitt who said he is a great kid with loads of talent who seems to be getting it now.
