Draft three months away … For those that keep track of these things, the 2011 draft gets underway exactly three months from today. Hang in there guys.
Panthers GM confirms QB interest … One of the great sideshows of the Senior Bowl in Mobile is that most of the top NFL personnel people are in town and most teams hold some kind of meet the press event during their stay. At his presser, for example, Carolina G.M. Marty Hurney re-iterated that the Panthers‘ #1 priority this off-season is the QB situation. Carolina has the top pick at the 2011 draft and both owner Jerry Richardson and new head coach Ron Rivera had both said previously that upgrading the passing attack would be job one for the Panthers this winter. Certainly, Hurney did not rule out using the #1 pick to select a quarterback, although there is obviously still a lot of sorting out for the Panthers to do between now and April 28th. At the same time, though, the Panthers continue to check out other prospects. The Panthers, for example, spent some time this week visiting the coaches at the local high school in Mobile which Auburn junior DT Nick Fairley attended during his prep days. The Panthers also reportedly spent a lot of time this week talking with LSU CB Patrick Peterson, another top-five prospect, who was in Mobile, but as a junior was ineligible to participate in the Senior Bowl. Meanwhile, Buffalo G.M. Buffalo G.M. Buddy Nix hinted that the Bills, who have the 3rd pick overall this year, could have some interest in Auburn QB am Newton, this year’s Heisman Trophy winner who led the Tigers to the national championship.
