The common denominator among the NFL Playoff Teams and Super Bowl Winners is an elite GM that knows HOW to draft football talent. So, who are the best GMs in the NFL??? You only have to look at the NFL teams who compete nearly every year for the Lombardi Trophy. They all have drafted or signed an elite QB to run their offense and have drafted elite athletes on both Offense & Defense.
So which GM's have drafted the best?? Here are some of the current top NFL GM's (my top ten) and I don't see Jerrah anywhere on this list. Let me know if I missed anybody on your top ten list:
1. Kevin Colbert (Steelers)
2. Bill Belichick (Patriots)
3. Bill Polian (Colts/Bills)
4. Jerry Reese (Giants)
5. Ozzie Newsome (Ravens)
6. Mickey Loomis (Saints)
7. A.J. Smith (Chargers)
8. Ted Thompson (Packers)
9. Thomas Dimitroff (Falcons)
10. Mike Tannenbaum (Jets)
Interestingly, many of these excellent GMs were former NFL scouts. Hopefully, our scouting department has improved over the years. Jason Garrett has already noted that's it a collaborative effort but how does the Cowboys drafting process really work??? Does the scouting department HAVE Jerrah's ear? Does Jerrah even REALIZE that our aging OL lacks 'explosiveness' due to its age and needs to be overhauled with this draft (due to drafting ninth in each round).
While Jerrah WANTS an impact player (i.e. Patrick Peterson, Robert Quinn, Von Miller) again this year, can he still sign via free agency or draft an elite RT, OG, or mammoth NT? Can he address our lack of quality depth at ILB (two aging ILB and Sean Lee is injury prone), Free Safety (Alan Ball is not the answer), CB (we need a stud 4th CB). Can he find us another RB and elite blocking FB (which we haven't had since Moose retired although they are available every year in the draft)?
The Patriots, Steelers, Packers, Giants, Ravens, Chargers, etc. just seem to RELOAD every year. They ALL seem to have a 'model' for certain NFL positions and then they go out and draft players that fit the model (i.e. Belichick likes his OG's in the 6'4" 310lbs range, his NT's to be mammoths, and his OLB'ers to be huge edge rushers or ILB's to be fast but big athletic thumpers, etc. etc.). Anyone ever hear what our DRAFT models are?? Just saying....
