Just a thought - Dex spent a lot of years being a consistant, dependable player for the Cowboys. He gets a lot of flack for dropping INT's, but no doubt he has been very productive with Dallas. Can't remember the numbers, but he is leaving with one of the top total tackles in team history, among several other great stats, I am sure.
I think it would be a nice gesture to craft a thank-you note from this board, commending him for his years in Dallas & wishing him the best in St. Louis.
No, I am not Dex's mother. :D
I think it would be a cool thing to start on this board - sending a nice letter to departing veterans that spend a lot of years with our team.
Anyone else think this is a good idea?
If we did something like this, does anyone know how we can get the letter to him?

Actually.....I feel like this is a very creative, original and thoughtful idea. I support this. Good thinking

Dear Dex,
Thanks for the great memories. Sorry you couldn't be a part of the Cowboys when they begin their steady incline to prominence again. You gave us your all. You gave us something to be proud of. But dammit, you were just too damn small in a changing and evolving NFL.
Wish you luck next season with the Rams, but hope you get blown up when we play ya. :D You really won't be a factor against us. So with that being said, see ya around GNAT!

Great Idea! Could be the start of a tradition? :D
There are a few other players I can think of in the past who could have presented with such a classy idea.
Let us know where to sign up eh?

Nothing fancy - just something like this...
Dear Mr. Coakley,
We would like to thank you for your 8 successful years as a linebacker for the Dallas Cowboys. It has been a pleasure to watch and cheer for you as your career developed in Dallas. Truly, you have left your mark on this organization as a consistent, dependable, and high-character player and individual. You will be missed, but surely honored.
We sincerely hope that you are able to enjoy a healthy and successful continuation to your career in St. Louis.
Thanks again for the memories,
Sincere regards,

I think it is a great idea.
Maybe we could get some nice letters or thoughts down and send it to Coakley's agent to pass on to Dex.
Whether people thought he was too small or not, he was one of the better draft Picks that Jerry made over the years, he was a total class act, he was a hard worker, never heard any about anything negative with him as far as off the field issues.
He was a bill bates type of player but with more skills.

All bias aside, why didn't we think of this when Woody retired?? :(
I do think it's a pretty cool idea, though.

It could be something nice to do for all of the players who have helped this team and have been warriors for this team.
We could do one for Woodson as well and try and get it to him.

Woody is a great example of another player that deserves this. Sorry I didn't think of it sooner.

Regardless of what some people say on this board, I think Coakley was a great player for us, he was part of the team two years ago when we had the #1 D in the league and he contributed to that. I think this is a great idea put my name down. Im going to miss Dexter "Diet" Coakley

Coakley definately gets props from me for everything that he brought....whether during the game or practice or workouts.
It's reported that he never missed a single workout in his entire tenure with the Cowboys. I'm willing to bet that not one other Cowboy has a track record like that....not one.
I like the idea. I'd be all for it.

I like this idea, it's a tradition I could get behind, though anyone who says we should put together a thank you letter for say... Eddie George or Dixon I'd recommend they insure their knees:chainsaw:

Id be willing to bet he missed at least one. He was out one game with a sprained knee. But I still don't think any other Cowboy in the last 5 years can touch that either.

While I do agree that something along these lines would be great to send to Woody, I'll take a stab at why we didn't think of it at the time.
Darren Woodson retired a Cowboy. With a fair deal of news attention and related honorific news stories.
The impression I got was that Woody knows perfectly well how he is regarded by us fans. While a letter of this type would certainly be deserved and appreciated, I don't think he needs a letter to know how we all feel.
IMO, Woody will be (and should be) in the Ring of Honor one day.
Coakley, on the other hand, was not only cut, but cut while he still has productive years to play. Due to the team's circumstances, I do feel that the time was right for Coakley to go, but amidst all the years of "too smalls" , "not making enough plays", and "Trade Coakley for {insert name here}" ya can't help thinking that Coakley was playing under the impression that he was always in fairly low standing with the fanbase.
I think a letter to Coakley is more along the lines of a "setting the record straight" (to a degree) rather than just an acknowldgement.
I think Coakley's reaction to a letter of this kind would might just be surprise, whereas Woodson already knows. We know that he knows, so a letter to tell him would not seem as obvious a thing to do.

Thats gay.
Pursuant to Title VII of the U.S. Code, I am officially filing a complaint with the Board EEO coordinator. I feel demeaned and depressed by this blatant discrimination and will demand compensation for pain and suffering from a hostile browsing environment. My attorney will contact you soon.
But, back to the subject, count me in on wishing Dex the best and hope the Rams can perform up to the standards of the Buffalo Bills with him backing the line.

I think this is a great idea...
I've learned that the best gift to give to yourself is to express sincere gratitude by saying "thank you" to someone else.
So, yep...I'm all for giving myself that gift.

Wimbo I think a letter to Woodson and to Coakley is a great idea. Emmitt just retired too. If you want to add a third I would be in favor of that as well. 1, 2 or 3, it is a great diea to honor men who played their hardest for this fan base.

It seems to me that a fair number of posters are on board with this idea. I am happy to pen the letters. I would like to get input from all on content of the letter, as well as the best way to sign it as being from this forum rather than a single fan. Maybe some of the more tech savy posters can think of a way for us to contibute to this effort in such a way as to make it personalized, yet from the group. Suggestions?

Good thinking Wimbo. I wouldn't have minded seeing him on the team another year, and it still seems a little odd that he's gone. He definitely deserves our respect.

I'm in. I always liked Dex, and I'll never forget seeing him when I was waiting outside the stadium for autographs about 4 or 5 years ago, and he came up to where I was standing and signed autographs for everyone, including an awestruck me :)

Ok, that is the kind of thing I want to capture... Yes, there will be a letter that is the typical 'thank you', but then attaching several comments like this one would be ideal. The idea is to thank the player (Dex, in this case) for his years and dedication to the star, but then a list of quotes from posters on the player, the man, his contributions to the team, his public service, etc...
This may only be a once a year thing, or even less... not every player that is cut or retired will qualify. But if they do, we give them a special thank you when they leave.

I'll admit I was sad to see Dex go. I had the privilege of being his neighbor for a few years. He lived on the fringe of coppell in an ordinary house. I first met him when I was with my younger sibling and driving them around on Halloween. You wouldn't understand the surpise I had of having him open the door to give treats out to everyone. What a class act, he shook my hand, we exchanged a few words about life and football and he even invited me to stop and say hi whenever I was in the neighborhood. Great guy.

i'd be proud to put my name by it. I'd think he'd feel loved and appreciated. It must be hard leaving the team that drafted you, and spend the majority of your career with. To see an outreach to you AFTER you were dropped by the team would be nice.

No, I am not Dex's mother. :D
Are you sure you aren't his mother ? ... or maybe his sister then ?
There must be something wrong with me because I seem to be the only one who doesn't get it.
Like Coakley is going to care what 15 or so "computer geeks" on an internet message board thinks.
I am sure he will keep it with him always, .. probably hang it up in his locker in St. Louis.
Like I said, there must be something wrong with me, but I don't think Coakley will give a royal rip.
I'm probably wrong though.

Players are people. For 8 years he lived and breathed Dallas Cowboys football. It might not get framed and hung on a wall, but I imagine he would appreciate the sentiment.
