Anyone else playing the beta?
I got in this past weekend and have really enjoyed my time in game so far. Everything is very polished so far and there are a ton of character class combinations. I also think the public rifts are a lot of fun.

Reading the P&P game description I'm going to say that it isn't related.

Not at all related to the PnP game. Though that would be something to see in an MMO!
I played the online Rifts the last two Beta runs. Seems very polished. There are some things I don't care for (respawn rate, coupled with mob density), but overall it seems pretty good. I hear it is an iteration of the WoW/Warhammer/LotRo/AoC style of game, but it seems to do it fairly well. Like the backstory; there were some clever bits in there, and also like that the opposing sides aren't GOOD!/EVIL!.
Supposed to really shine up past level 20. Don't know 'bout that though.

I was invited early to the beta. My girl and I have only had time to play the last 4 Betas, but we absolutely LOVE the game so far and have already pre-ordered the CE of Rift.
The next beta will be even better w/ the extended amount of time we get to play. A week compared to a couple of days is a lot.
Fantastic game if anyone is interested. It will be THE MMO this year, from what I can see.
I reserve the right to take this back once/IF Diablo III every launches, but for NOW this is the game for us.
I PvP'd most of the weekend and I love the classes and the abilities available. I did a lot of open world PVP and that was a blast as well.
Just something about fighting a real human toon than a scripted toon.
Excellent game folks. If you have the opportunity, try and get a beta key prior to Feb 15th.
28th Level Marksman/Ranger/Bard atm but will switch to Marksman/Ranger/Sin next beta.

One of the best parts IMO is that they won't balance classes for PVP and PVE. So if something is overpowered in PVP they won't totally change the class mechanics so it kills PVE.
Did you order the CE box or online from Trion?

I just ordered the Digital download direct from Trion. I didn't know that about PvP/PvE as far as changes. That is FANTASTIC news.
We are SO excited about this game. We should really try and play on the same server. We aren't particular as long as they are PvP servers. :)
Keep me posted of your plans for the game.
We enjoy playing w/ real friends in these games. Glad to see you are part of this launch and are enjoying yourself. We sure are.

The word-of-mouth coverage of Rift has been strong for months even before the first public beta testing began. The graphics in the game are impressive and the game UI seems to be somewhat of a hybrid version between WoW and LoTRO. The people behind it came from other well known MMOs and are definitely winning over the beta player base.
Most of the game does not reinvent the wheel which can be both a good or bad thing depending on what you are after but they did come up with a really unique concept for the class system. You choose/acquire souls of various classes that will allow you to mix and match your character build the way you want it. That means you are not herded into a linear path of progression like most other MMOs out there including WoW. The number of class combinations with a full set of souls equipped should dwarf (pun intended) any other MMO on the market.
As for Game of the Year potential, it definitely has a chance, but I still think Star Wars The Old Republic or even Guild Wars 2 has a chance as well assuming the latter makes it out before the end of 2011.
I got a couple of VIP keys for friends of mine who are avid MMO players and they love Rift and have already pre-ordered it. Most comments I have heard or seen from Rift beta testers are extremely positive. I think the next beta test starts February 15th.

Interesting.
One of the best things about EQ1 was that the game was entirely balanced around PVE, with no thought of PVP balance. This sounds bad in theory, but it worked out amazingly.
Some of the worst pvp classes were the most essential for pve, which made good players of those classes really stand out and in need. Players of popular pvp classes were a dime a dozen. it created a really unique system.
I haven't read much about rift. WoW set a trend in MMO's that I have no desire to be a part of. Everything is just handed to players anymore. You can play 40 hours a week getting the best gear and the day an expansion comes out you can upgrade your gear off of trash npc's.
In EQ you could hold onto an item you got at level 9 until you were level 50 because it was the best you could get. And you didn't upgrade raid gear until the next expansions' raid content, except for a few rare items off group encounters.
Whats the pvp system going to be like in Rift? FFA? is it one side vs another? Alignment pvp is awful. I don't want to kill someone cause they chose a different alignment, I want to kill them because they just KS'ed the mob I've been camping for 2 hours.
Is it set up for pvp only in arena style? Or is it just PVP anywhere?
Guess I should read up on it.

We are playing on Sunrest atm. I think it is the PvP-RP server for Rift. There might be a couple more. I don't know why we are playing on an RP server but my girl started before me so I jumped in.
It's also pretty populated. Im sure you know you want to play on a fairly active server. That's the issue when starting these new games is figuring out where you want your home to be. I moved around quit a bit playing WoW.
Think about a PvP server. It sure would be fun playing w/ you. We don't PvP a lot, but we like the excitement it brings to the regular PvE game aspect. I don't think Trion is going crazy for PvP. I think they will include the large aspects of it but it won't be like WoW w/ the Arena leagues n such. From what I read they are focused on content moreso than complete solid PvP. I don't mind that at all. One can only PvP for so long before it gets REALLY OLD. The rewards are nice however so I will be doing that during the down times of raids and group functions.
I used to lead the #2 Horde guild on Lightninghoof. I kind of miss being a GuildLeader. I was approached many times in AION and Warhammer/DAOC etc. to begin something again but it is sooo much work, but you make so many life friends doing it, I might just change my mind. I really miss having a close guild to play these games with. That's a lot of my excitement I get from MMO's is the friendships and fun things you get to do as a team.
It would be cool if we could all play together. Get a little CBZ crew rolling out to slay some Rifts weekly would be KEEN. ;)

Sunrest is the server we play on and we are on the Guardian faction side.
Defiant side is cool w/ races and racial abilities but we discovered there is a bit more polish w/ the environments and cut scenes n such on the Guardian side.
Why do developers do that. Do they not think the customer won't notice the developmental differences from each side?
It was that was w/ WoW. The Alliance had it a bit nicer as far as game environment starting out than the Horde orig did. Thing caught up but it just seems like a lot of games are this way.

There isn't a good or bad side w/ this game. Thats the cool thing about it. The different factions have different races but they aren't good or evil.
Each faction is out to save Telara but in different ways, thus the conflict of "HOW" to save Telara.
Defiant : "Well your way sucks at saving the planet. I want to save the planet this way."
Bayne: "Well you suck and your ways of saving us sucks. I don't like you anymore, can you just put me on your IGNORE LIST? You know what, nevermind....just chew on this FIREBALL to the FACE oh oh and here is my pet Razorback named "PigBacon", let him charge you a few times and rake your arms and legs while you deal w/ that pyro issue going on on your face."

Have they started allowing download of the beta client yet? This thread pushed me over the edge and I preordered the game from Trion, and now I'm starting to wonder if I'll get to play in the open beta. Maybe I'm just waaay over estimating the amount of players that will be grabbing the client for this open beta, but it seems like if they want everyone to get in on time they ought to start pushing it out really, really soon. Or maybe downloads have already started but I'm just missing it?

Gotcha...standby for the download link. I'm just paranoid that I'll somehow miss it or that I've misread the FAQs.
I guess I'm just used to how Blizzard starts pushing out patches days or even weeks before they actually go live in order to reduce stress on their fileservers and to make sure everyone is up and going when it actually does go live.
Anyway, thanks for the confirmation!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rift_(video_game)
From Wikipedia:
Rift is set in a fantasy world which is the focal point of different planes (worlds). These worlds have now invaded Telara, causing rifts to open. These rifts begin to spawn monsters which proceed to march towards important points on the map. It is then up to players to defeat these monsters and to close the rift. If rifts are left unchecked, the invading monsters will eventually conquer large portions of the map, killing and significantly impairing the players in that area. Players do not have to be in a group to be able to join a rift and are rewarded for many things including healing, attacking and buffing. The severity and locations of the rifts are entirely dynamic (and thus random). Rifts of 6 different types (earth, fire, air, water, life, and death) are possible, and rifts of different types will oppose each other.

Hi
I am bumping this thread because Rift is awesome and you are missing out if you don't come play the FREE BETA for a week to check it out. The BETA event is the last one and it all starts tomorrow morning. Below is the link to get in the Beta. All you have to do is sign up for an account and WAIT for TRION to contact you through email that your account is setup and you can download the beta client. It's about 8GB and doesn't take much time at all to get setup.

If you enjoy fantasy styled MMORPG then you HAVE GOT TO CHECK RIFT OUT.
Give it a chance. Even for a BETA it is production ready right now. I have never played a Beta that was so polished and ready for its user base.
If you do play, come over to the Sunrest server on the Guardian side. That's where I play.
Send Bayne a whisper in game and my girl and I will come over and help you out. We are lvl 28 atm so we can't quest w/ you much but we can answer all of your questions and help you settle in a bit faster.
We even have a ventrilo server, so if you are into voice chat while gaming(don't laugh most are :) ) come on over.

Everyone was asking about that during the last Beta. It's great they finally answered it. But I bet it doesn't last. The botting in DAOC got REDICULOUS in RVR. They finally dissallowed them.

WoW has done a good job of keeping the multi-boxing botters out. I think that Rift should be able to do the same. It's super easy to see who's boxing and a GM can ask a few simple questions and eliminate those folks cheating the system.

Not bad so far but of all the WoW clones I've played, this one is the....cloniest. I was able to jump right in as a rogue and feel very comfortable with what I was doing. Combo points, finishers, poisons, it's all there and accessed through an action bar that looks vaguely familiar.
Not that cloning WoW is a deal breaker, mind you. I just wonder if this has enough different to offer people that they'd make a long term switch from Warcraft. It's gonna have to be more than "look, your warrior has a pet!!"
Disclaimer: My opinion is only based on running three different characters, both factions, different shards, up to level 10. I've not grouped up, done any instances, or PVP'd yet, and this is the only Beta I've played. In any case, I've already preordered and paid for 6 months so I'll get plenty of time to tune my opinion.

Have you joined any of the public groups to close rifts? I found that to be a lot of fun.

Taking a break for dinner, then I'm going to roll a healer and then start in on the rifts. The rifts look really, really cool and I'm looking forward to getting in on that.
Also, doing my duty as a beta tester and looking hard for bugs, but I haven't run across so much as a rough edge. No lag to speak of and I have no problems with the login process. This build seems really solid and just about ready for retail. I hope they do some work on the voice acting though. It's pretty bad.

Very fun game, the release was a little shaky simply because they had over 1 million subscribers before they even spun up the first server. So there were many hours long queues and such. Now, the queues are gone and I find the game to be just plain fun. If you're an MMO person, or think you'd like to give the genre a try, pick this one up.

Level 35 about to be 36 tonight. :) Rift is AWESOME. I was a bit peaved w/ the Q times on the day of launch but they had numerous alternate servers available late that evening and since then I have had zero Q times on my new server.
I have to say I am having more fun playing Defiant than I was playing Guardian. I don't know if that's the devil in me or not.
Great great game and definately something for you all sitting on the fence to check out. I think it's safe to get in the water now and not be afraid you may have spent 60$ for nothing.
Rifting is soooo much fun. I rifted last night and took in nearly 1400 planarite during 1 event by defending and not sealing the rift. The boss finally came through and I tanked him for the raid w/ no trouble. The Guardians were on the other side of him trying to taunt him back to their guard area, but we werent having any of that. Each time a little mage or rogue or w/e would creep to close to the boss or our raid, I would charge them and stun them and then our dps would be all OVER em killing em. It was AWEEEESSSSSSSOMEEEE. Most fun I have had in an MMO in a very long time. :starspin
Another thing I enjoy about PvP in Rift is the cross faction talking. Everyone can understand each other. There are these puzzles in each zone where you can sit and work them trying to solve them. The item is random but will always be a blue item your level or above or a purple epic item. My girl has received 3 epics this way and I have received 2. Anyways..we went to do a puzzle last night and there was a 50 guardian there doing it when we arrived. Since he was 50 and would most likely have killed us if we engaged him we decided to play nice and wait. My girl and I went and sat next to the puzzle and helped him solve it together. We all chatted about the game and how much we liked it. He got it solved and received his reward and mounted and rode off thanking us in the process.
It was cool.... :)

Some patch notes:
Hey, everyone.
As you’ve probably noticed -- We launched! Last week was four retail launches in four different territories. By and large, everything went extremely well. Nothing exploded, and we’re rapidly adjusting to the pace of being a live game.
Now that we’ve all collectively survived the process of taking a game from Beta to Live, it’s time to resume focusing on what’s coming up in the future.
In the next day, you’re going to see our first real update. (8AM PST Thursday for the NA servers, 2AM UTC Friday for the EU servers)
This first update does have some new content, and also includes a rather large collection of tweaks, fixes, and updates that come from a few different sources.
They’ve been picked out of what people have been reporting in game, as well as a number of beta-reported polish items that didn’t make it in time for head start, and also some further refinement and tuning after seeing what happens when people finally get the chance to play characters that’ll be around forever.
Some of the things to expect tomorrow are…
• Raid rifts!
• Improvements to Rift, Invasion, and Foothold experience gains
• See more quests at once in the tracker if you choose
• Better item stack management
• PvE end-game difficulty better suited to the power of real end-game characters
Making sure that we can do an update like this successfully is an important step on the road to doing even larger scale content and systems additions in the not-too-distant future.
Our team will be right here while this first update is going on. We’ll be checking out the servers alongside you, and will be here to respond to any surprise issues that do occur.
We also have a lot more in development than the first look you’ll be seeing tomorrow.
On top of ongoing new content and large feature development, many of which you’ll be hearing about on our site and others, there are some other, smaller improvements we’re working toward – I wanted to call these out specifically since they’re pretty frequently commented on.
• Mages. Yes, we’re both listening to you and paying attention to the post-launch gameplay data on our servers. While a well-played mage does do extremely well, and mages are very well represented in the overall number of active characters, there are issues with competitiveness in some low and mid level ranges and certain combinations of souls, due largely to mages’ overall fragility and cast times.
• Mail Spam. Chat spam protection has been going really well on the whole, which, predictably, pushed spammers into mail. We’ll be putting more protection in place there soon.
• Event Contribution. This system is being reworked to be more in line with the idea of events being massively social occurrences, and the focus on abilities themselves will be going away entirely.
• Anti-Hacker Protection. As a very high priority, we’re working on new and interesting ways to help you make sure your account is protected from password phishing and keyloggers. In the short time since head start, we’ve already banned a couple thousand spammers, hackers, farmers, and thieves. We’ll continue improving our detection and ability to take action on them well into the future.
• Dismount and Exposed. Expect some changes here as well.
Thank you all for your dedication so far – We look forward to this first small update, and a host of even larger ones in the future!
- The RIFT Development Team
Glad the developers are being so active on these issues.

Detailed patch notes: :)
Rift 1.01 - [NA] 3/10/11 8:00am PST
3/10/11
== FEATURED ==
* Experience for appropriately sized groups relative to the difficulty of Rift, Invasion, and Foothold content has been returned to higher amounts as seen previously in Beta.
* Water, Life, Death, and Air Raid Rifts are now available.
* You can now set how many quests to track on-screen at once (up to 10) by changing the setting in the Interface -> Display category.
* Shift-clicking to split stacks of items now works in your bank or bank bags.
* Fixed issues causing player armor to appear the wrong colors after respawning or Soul Walking.
GENERAL GAMEPLAY
* You can now link locations in chat! Just like other links, shift-right-click your map or minimap while entering chat text. Clicking someone's location link in chat will place a waypoint on your own map.
* You can swim up using the jump key while also in mouselook mode (default: right mouse button to look around).
* Added a custom error if you cannot use a questgiving item.
* Raid groups roaming across the lands to destroy non-Rift/Invasion content will see lowered experience rewards.
* Experience for appropriately sized groups relative to the difficulty of Rift, Invasion, and Foothold content has been returned to higher amounts as seen previously in Beta.
* Cash loot is now auto-split in all group loot modes, including Free-for-All.
* Players are now automatically bound to the Soul Recall point of the first Porticulum Master they speak to.
* Achievement: Seeking Solace: Fixed an issue causing the achievement to grant early and prevent you from looting the other objects.
RIFTS AND INVASIONS
* Fixed a bug during Major Rifts where low ranking contributors wouldn't get Planarite. All contributors should receive at least some Planarite.
* Reduced the amount of zone event participation required to earn the rare Sourceshards.
* Experience for Rift, Invasion, and Foothold content now scales down from these increased levels when very oversized groups are participating – with the net result being that very large groups should see experience values similar to the amounts granted prior to this update. Smaller groups will see increased experience reward.
* Reduced Notoriety gained from Invasions from 75 to 50 total.
* Increased the bonus health given to Rift NPCs when nearby player population is high. Also added increased damage based on population.
* Added additional fail-safes to ensure Colossi bosses appear at the end of events.
CULT SAGA
* The Care and Imprisonment of Changelings: Changed to not require you to have claimed the colossi mob. You only need to participate in the kill.
* Links in the pages of the book 'Clever Kehmeh' have been fixed so all seven pages are readable.
* Anthousa Mona and Kaspar Massi have updated character models. Kaspar also has a new voice!
* The necklace rewards for the Epic Cult Saga have had their power increased.
ANCIENT WARDSTONES
* Quests for Ancient Wardstones are now labeled as such in your quest journal.
* After turning in quests at some Ancient Wardstones, a Rare Planar Goods Merchant might appear so you can purchase sweet gear with the currency you just earned.
GUILD PERKS
* Journeyman has been fixed and will now work as described.
COMBAT
* Abilities and other effects that increase the duration of other effects now do so before that duration calculation is modified by diminishing returns.
* You can no longer cycle between ranged and melee weapons while casting an ability.
* Fixed several maintained buffs that would cause non-offensive polymorphs to break (ex: troll disguise in Stonefield, etc).
SOUL
* Clerics: Fixed a bug causing some procced heals to consume effects that modify next heal.
ARCHON
* Ashen Defense: Corrected the debuff tooltip to match the ability description.
* Mental Flare: The cooldown reduction provided by Swift Thoughts is now reflected in the ability tooltip.
* Pillaging Stone: Rank 9 and 10 now give the correct buff values when cast.
* Searing Vitality: Damage can now critically hit.
* Consuming Flames: The self-damage portion of this ability will no longer critically hit the caster.
* Burning Purpose: Polymorph, Confuse, Root, and Fear effects will not trigger the damage proc.
ASSASSIN
* Expose Weakness: Fixed a bug so that the charges of this ability are only consumed by physical damage effects. Also fixed so it correctly adds extra damage.
* Poison Malice: Removed from global cooldown. Now costs 25 Energy to activate.
BARD
* Deafening Music: This ability now updates the tooltip damage numbers for Coda of Fury and Coda of Wrath.
* Coda of Cowardice: Debuff should now be in the same stacking group as the Archon's Ashen Defense and the Shaman's Vengeance of the Piercing Cold.
* Using Verse of Fascination or Verse of Captivation now turns off auto-attack, since these effects break on damage.
BEASTMASTER
* Backhanded Blow: Now gives an Attack Point and triggers the global cooldown.

INFILTRATOR [PvP]

* Righteous Mandate: No longer blocks itself from being recast on the same target.
* Doctrine of Loyalty: Rank 5 now properly removes a Conviction.
MARKSMAN

* Quick Reload: Removed from global cooldown.

* Paladin’s Reprisal: Now has icons that match between the ability and the Soul Tree.
* Aegis of Salvation: Now stacks correctly with other Endurance buffs.
PURIFIER
* Searing Transfusion: Will no longer consume effects that don't actually modify it, such as Flashover, Enflamed Rejuvenation, or Greater Empowerment.

That's looking pretty sweet as well. However it is being made by Funcom so it could fall flat on its face like AoC did.

AoC is one of the best 3 MMORPG's going right now, they launched it too early and because of it its hard to get into as if you start now there is not alot of people at the beginning of the game, so the community is dead.
FunCom does not look to be making that mistake with TSW, slowly releasing information and everything they release has been outstanding. Hell the game didn't even have an official website until today and its been in production for 4 years, the hype is ridiculous and its spreading via word of mouth, the marketing behind TSW is incredibly genius as they must not be spending much money at this point, but after Rift and SWTOR its the most talked about upcoming MMORPG. I'll take 3rd place for probably 1/50th of the cost, if that.
article on FunCom's first massive information release about TSW, cameout today: http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/10/gdc-2011-funcom-talks-the-secret-worlds-pve-pvp-and-arg/
