So the signing bonus will count 1.4 mill per year, wonder what the first year amount is.
We had to make this move. Without Ferguson, we really had no defensive plan in sight. Now just go get him a good backup and long-term replacement somewhere in the draft . I can't rely on s###break (American Pie reference).

Good looking out. How is it they have Ferguson's contract details and not Henry's?
That 11mil in the first two years was probably the sticking point. How do you structure the contract to get 11 mil over two years and yet not impact the cap more?

WOW...that's a pretty big chunk on the first two years. So he will count around 5 to 5.5 million on the cap each year?
But I expected what he got as a SB of 9 mill

I like the signing.. what we are/were gonna do on defense depended on us signing Ferguson. O how I wish we could sign the lb's Bell or Hartwell (kid from Baltimore).
If you guys remember, we could have had Bell in the draft, but we chose QUincy instead..... :banghead:

A little longer than I would have liked but a fairly reasonable contract and SB for a good player. I like it.

People, let's say this once and for all:
His job is not to get tackles and sacks. It is to occupy the interior of the line so that his fellow linemen and LB's can make plays.

Seems like a good contract, with $11 mill in the first two years, the last 3 will only cost $10 mill, not a back loaded contract. We have the cap room now, might as well use it. I like it.

Good defensive tackles cost. This certainly isn't over the top. This is about par for the market. Good value.

And we have even a little more than that according to Adam yesterday. It was around $18 million following Coakley's release.

absolutely 100% right....
Ferguson was a great signing for us. Henry will be aswell, Frazier can play Nickel. Gotta get a decent FS back there and let RW move over to SS. :hammer:
espnnews wire reported that we signged DE Jason Ferguson to a 5 year contract, DE, i thought he was a DT.

No.. the 9 mill is divided across all 5 years so jsut under 2 mill per... the rest depends on how much the other 12.5 million is put into each year... according to this he gets 11.5 mill int he 1st 2 years... so is it only 2.5 million over the 9? if so we are looknig at like a 3 mill cap hit... though that seems low to me.
Too much money IMHO....
He better produce....but with Zimmer running the show...I don't expect much.
3-4....can Zimmer handle it?....maybe the old syracuse coach will help Zimmy out.
Oh well....we wasted money on George,Vinny,Wiley....hopefully Ferguson will live up to our expectations.....

what's the estimated cap hit on fergusons contract?
My guess would be $2.5M this year:
$9M SB prorated over 5 years = $1.8M
Vet min salary this year = $0.7M

Well, if ESPN is right and Ferguson is going to cost us 11.5 million in the first two years (and I'm guessing they are including the bonus in that caculation) then I would imagine that Ferguson will cost about $6 million against the cap this year.
That would leave us with about $13 million left, but that isn't including the Henry signing.

Apologies in advance if I'm giving attributions to your posts you don't deserve, but it seems like you show up every now and then just to throw a turd in our pool. Or are you trying to live up to your reputation?

So the signing bonus will count 1.4 mill per year, wonder what the first year amount is.Actually the SB cap hit will be more like 1.8 mil per year. This is not a bad deal; it's a front loaded contract so it is kind of expensive for the first two years but livable and he won't be costing us so much if his production drops after 3 years or so.

Unless I'm reading wrong, the $11.5 million in the first two years includes the $9 million signing bonus. A SB is pro-rated for the team, but the player gets it all at once. 11.5 - 9 leaves $2.5 million base salary spread over the first 2 years.
Adam will probably beat me down, but I think the cap number is around $2.5 million. I get the sense this is really more like a 4 year contract. Year 5 he gets cut or retires by then.

I'm very impressed with the foresight to frontload Ferguson's deal. Dallas has a huge cap space this year, use it.
Suppose for a moment that Ferguson is in Dallas for all five years (no unlikely for a DT his age), Dallas could absorb 6-7 million of his 21.5 million this season, then you're looking at a 4 year deal worth 15 million or so. That's a great deal for a gifted lineman. Plus when Julius Jones or Witten's contract are up and they come knockin' for their big money deal, the money won't be tied up.
Great job at improving for the present while keeping an eye out for the future.

What if Fergy falls in TC, then what?
Is the whole season out the window? We better get a few dozen more defensive players in camp.

Yes, These 2 signings will put more wins on board this coming year...
Don't worry Mash...Parcells is taking over on D...(3-4)
And from what I gathered from my Chat with Mr. Rogers, yes the "Cuse" coach will be gaining ground & coaching on D, not TE's, where he was mentioned to be coaching...
Avery:
Please don't use the word "occupy" Olineman...Thats something zimmy might say...Parcells & I hate that kind of talk! :)
True Football players can do it all! Or else we would have signed a nobody like Noble...

Vikings | Williams Agrees to Three-Year Deal - from www.KFFL.com
Wed, 2 Mar 2005 17:42:03 -0800
Jay Glazer, of FOXSports.com, reports the Minnesota Vikings have agreed to terms with free agent DT Pat Williams (Bills) on a three-year, $13 million contract including $6 million in bonus money. The deal also includes incentives that could eventually reach $15 million.
"Without Ferguson, we really had no defensive plan in sight."

This is why I said the team must address a backup behind Ferguson through the draft.
But there was simply no way, without Ferguson, we could not only get a starting NT, but also a backup NT, without seriously drafting just for need come April.
And we saw how quickly Pat Williams was picked up by Minnesota. There's no way we'd have been able to get him.
We'd have ended up with a spare, or drafting for need. Ferguson, rightfully so, was the centerpiece to this offseason.
There are a number of players that, if they go down in training camp, could crumple our season. This goes for every team in the league.

I'd say that is pretty key. You don't want to get stuck with Carson or Blade as your only options if because of injury.
$9 million SB is about right on par. Some DT numbers from last year:
Cornelius Griffin – Washington Redskins – 6 years, $25.5 million, $8 million signing bonus.
Robaire Smith – Houston Texans – 6 years, $26.3 million, $8.35 million signing bonus.

Inflation, CPI, more money from TV revenue plus the whole time value of money thing. Its makes since the players are getting more today than they did four years ago.

Um...I meant Ferguson had more tackles last year than Glover.... :banghead:
Is 3-4 years older than Ferguson, much heavier and a far riskier SB sign - JMO
Ferguson is a real disruptive player. He just kinda mauls and wiggles around and disrupts stuff. Doesn't get all the sacks and press, but a heck of a football player.

.
Keep an eye on a few second day guys. Albert Means is a big dude from Memphis who didn't really do much in college. At the combine he showed really nice feet. Wisconsin also has a guy named Jefferson (I believe) who is about 315. He is not as known as Hawthorne but Mayock on the NFL network really liked his feet. Both guys could be options. Bryant from Alabama is also another name but he is really out of shape. The DT from Utah is another name but he is 26. All four are probably second day guys.
