Dilfer: Cam Newton workout was 'phenomenal' Speaking on ESPN Thursday afternoon, analyst Trent Dilfer called Auburn QB Cam Newton's Thursday media day workout "one of the most phenomenal personal workouts I've ever seen."
"If scouts saw this they'd have been slobbering," added Dilfer, who called Newton a "dynamic athlete" and "incredibly impressive." Dilfer praised Newton's refinement, accuracy, and arm strength while proclaiming the "sky is the limit." Newton's measurables have never been in question, so it's hardly surprising that he excelled in a controlled environment. It is a positive sign, though, that the tutoring on his footwork and acclimation to working under center have paid off. It now seems likely that a team with a top-five selection will fall in love Newton, but his character concerns and football acumen will still be scrutinized over the next two months.

Trent Dilfer of Cam Newton workout: “Phenomenal”
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on February 10, 2011, 2:19 PM EST
NFL scouts couldn’t attend Cam Newton’s random Thursday “Media Day” workout. But if they could . . .
“That was phenomenal,” ESPN’s Trent Dilfer reports via Bruce Feldman. “If scouts saw this they’d have been slobbering.”

Let's hope he impresses the scouts later this year.
The higher he moves up, the better it is for us.

I am not disagreeing on the workout (because how would I know?), but that Dilfer deals in more hyperbole than anybody since.... well his buddy Cowherd. I like Dilfer and he does a good job, but before I even clicked on this topic I filled in the word "PHENOMINAL"! Knew that was one of his catchphrases, he throws compliments around like donut holes rather than manhole covers.

That remains to be seen about Newton's workout being "phenomenal" the guy is freakishly athletic that's for darn sure.
Dilfer is a rah rah guy and that is needed on a network like BSPN, from time to time when most of that media bash on players alot don't get me started about the Dallas Cowboys players.
As far as Dilfer, saying that Newton's workout was the most phenomenal he's ever seen that can be said about alot of QBs workouts over the years that being said we all know that Newton has alot of work to do to prepare for the NFL.

Dilfer always pumps up the Cowboys then ends up eating crow cause they end up sucking. :laugh2:
Same thing will probably happen with Cam. :lmao2:

I'll take Dilfer over pretty much any other ex-jock analyst. Then again, that's not saying much.
I have no doubt Cam Newton puts on a phenomenal controlled workout. I think everyone agrees he's a physical specimen. The question is can he digest an NFL playbook of hundreds of plays and efficiently run an NFL offense. And if so, how long is it going to take?

He's a top 10 pick and I've always thought that.
I honestly think he's a top 5 guy.

I agreee with you. this guy will be a top 10 pick.
I do not get why any one would put him out of top ten.
he is a great athlete with a great arm and a winner

Trent Dilfer is one of the few commentators I can still stand listening to, so I'll respect his opinion and leave it at that.

if VY can be a top 3 pick, there's no reason why Newton can't be a top 5 pick. He's got a better delivery and look like a stronger arm. From the few game that I saw, he actually trust his arm on critical downs instead of taking off to run during important situations all the time.
Will he be a great NFL QB? don't know that but he's got the physical tools. don't know what a few million bucks will do to him. That's where the wonderholic scores come in ;)

You can't compare Cam Newton to VY... Cam's physical tools make Vince Young look like a JV squad player. Newton is a true leader, I love the way he DOMINATED the SEC (the toughest conference in all of college football).

I consider if I'm GM of Carolina #1, Buffalo #3 or Cincy #4.
To be a QB in Buffalo you have to have a rifle for an arm.
Cam, Spiller, Evans would be a nice trio.

Evans? haha. He is done there.
It's more about Steve Johnson there now..

Why would anyone doubt that he'd do well in a personal workout?

I wish Luck would have come out.....Come on Cam, work your magic....Mallett and Locker too...let's get 4 QBs drafted before us....along with Fairley, Quinn, Bowers, and Green.

This shouldn't surprise anyone, Newton's a physical freak at the QB position. He can be as good as he wants to be if he puts the time in and is a coachable player.

This kid is a stud. He goes to Blinn JC they win the NC. He goes to Auburn they win the NC. Auburn had no business being in that game if it wasn't for him. I remember the Auburn fans went nuts when they hired Chizik. He sucked at Iowa State all those years.
This kid is a winner plain and simple.

Well there's no reason to believe that he can't do the latter, just because he hasn't. Plenty of college QBs come from non pro style offenses and become good pro QBs (for instance..our own) but because he's a headline grabber and a dynamic athlete the media has to make "definitive" statements one way or the other.

.......NOT talent wise but he's just a dolt. Not real bright and ask Tennessee if this guy reminds them of anyone. I really think he's Vince Young redux, but time will tell.

Have to say I wasn't that high on Cam.
But over the past few weeks I've been surprised at the really positive input coming from people who really do know somethng about what it takes to QB in the NFL. Jaws was talking on ESPN the other day and said he'd been studyuing him and was really surprised and thought that he had the foundation become really good. Dilfer, I think, really knows his stuff too.
He just might go in the top 8--which would be sweet.

I'm not saying he can't. Some shotgun based college QBs have made it, but the percentages aren't great.
I'm definitely cheering for Cam to go in the top 8 and push another player down to us.

I have a problem with this because what basis do you have to say that he's not real bright? The kid came in for one year and picked up an entire offensive playbook leading his team to an undefeated NC season, how does that lead you to make that assumption about him?

Auburn ran a playbook? They ran a gimmick offense with stacked routes on pass plays. At least in the couple of games I watched.
Just like Vince Young's offense at UT.

Yep. It would push a good player down to us at #9, and if he turns out to be the real deal, the Skins won't have him. :D

Doesn't mean he's going to be a good QB at the NFL but I think he has all the tools.
He's also going about it the right way. He doesn't have any issues above the waist mechanically like Young or Tebow. Not a side-arm motion or long wind-up. All his issues are below the waist with his feet and his drop-back. He appears to be working very had at fixing that.
It sounds like he has a good head on his shoulders too.

I saw the workout and I was amazed. It was terrific. I haven't been that high on him although I thought he had a chance to be a good QB. Teams are going to have to rethink their position on him.

I stopped being impressed by QB workouts a long time ago. Jeff George, Ryan Leaf, Heath Shuler, Jumongus, the list goes on and on of QBs that looked great in workouts but stank in the NFL.
Chris Landry was on today and was talking about Newton. He wouldn't commit to pinning down where he would draft him yet. Mostly because he probably hasn't met him or seen how well he can digest a play book. How well an NFL teams thinks he can pick up an offense will determine how much of a chance some team will take on him. Lets hope a team before us takes the plunge or even some team wanting to move up to our pick if we don't like our options at 9.
