The discrepancy between the league’s and the union’s view of the size of the slice of the pie that the players collectively receive isn’t the only issue on which the NFL and the NFLPA disagree. The two sides also disagree on the rookie wage scale.

Or, as the union now calls it, the “veteran wage scale.”

Liz Mullen of SportsBusiness Journal reported earlier today that NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith explained in a memo to certain players that the rookie wage scale proposed by management would affect players with three to five years of experience, or as Smith put it “the core of our membership.”

Ridiculous. It's only the top half of the 1st round that people have a problem with. So while it is true that a lot of the players are 3-5 year veterans, if they were picked in the 2nd round or later I doubt it would affect them very much.

Smith is just wanting rookie contracts to push veterans contracts up.

How would that effect the players who are already in the league?

More and more I am thinking Smith wants a strike/lockout so he can make a rep.

I really doubt that 90% of the players in the Union are worried about the 10-15 guys a year that make so much money off of the draft.

Which it ain't gonna happen and this would be solved in 3 seconds if it was in the way of a new CBA.. 99% of the current membership agrees that the rookie salaries at the top are ridiculous. This is a non-starter..

DeMaurice Smith is going to be most responsible for a lack of an agreement.

Just part of the negotiation process. Sounds like the NFL offered a rookie cap with no additional limits on contract length and the NFLPA is telling their members about it. I would expect the counter proposal to be to limit the rookie contract length to 3 years and they'll probably eventually settle on 4.

Hopefully it ends the same way for Smith
