View Full Version : Who's your top 5 favorite rock bands?

Royal Laegotti

Any time or era.

My top 5:

Alice in Chains
Tool
Led Zeppelin
Van Halen (DLR)
Soundgarden

This latest AIC album is pretty dang good. I think this new singer Duvall belongs. He sounds a bit like Layne but he has his own way that works also.

Anyway that's my .02, who's your top 5?

Not here to judge, just interested in which bands people like the best. I like Fleetwood Mac ALOT and would've put them at #5 but Soundgarden edged them out for me. Some probably don't think they're rock, I do. If these groups make you push down a little more on that gas pedal going down the highway, ain't nothin' wrong with that, as long as you ain't speedin' of course.:D

I stopped ranking bands. I suppose if you note what band has the most songs that I like, Metallica and it's not even close. Second would probably be either Slayer or Led Zeppelin. Hmm, followed by Stevie Ray Vaughn, Kiss, AC/DC, Beatles, etc

Achilles Last Stand, an absolute epic song, one of my favorites as far as 10 minute songs go. If you're gonna jam to a tune for that long it better be a good one.

I thought about including Bob Dylan and whoever he was playing with at the time. Same with Johnny Cash, and Chuck Berry. But the question said "Bands" so I tried to stick with just groups.

That's such a cool attitude, even if it is a little tongue in cheek. I absolutely hate it when people are snobbish about music. It's personal preference. Personally, metal all sounds like a hack saw on sheet tin to me, but if people like it then by all means let them have it.

I also find it hilarious when people try to act "macho" based off the music they listen to. Like because their favorite band has more of one kind of sound in it it somehow makes them tougher.

That's close to what my old man says about metal, only difference is he says it sounds like a wire brush on a tin wash tub.
:laugh2: Guess I can't argue with it, just think it's a funny comparison. I'm sure my Grandpa made fun of his, what is now considered, "classic rock".

One thing I always chuckle at in threads like this are non-rock bands who make the list. Everyone has their own idea of what a "rock" band is I know.

Every single band I see listed is rock. There are probably 40-50 legit variations of it. I could also say that absolutely none of the ones listed are rock because none of them are Chuck Berry or Elvis. :stop:

One of the best shows I ever saw was a Sick of it All show. Now granted Sick of it All is a brutal simple loud metalcore band but they were so tight and harsh it was pretty amazing.

The openers were pretty amazing-Indecision,Hot Water Music(my fave), and AFI, the kids were all over AFI more than any other band remember this was late 90's like 97/98 or something. It was in a tiny tiny club maybe 500 capacity.

Can't really think of a 5th. There are plenty I like well enough, but nothing jumps out right now. I'm just not much of a music person. Outside of Metallica, I only know of the others because of my wife, but they are good.

Most rock is fine usually, as long as it's not the screamo crap. That's just a waste of good instrumental sounds IMO.

I liked the rock of the 50s but t6he 60s not so much and the 70s were better but that is where it ended for me. I haven't listened to a radio since the early 80s.

On You tube I like the Corrs (an Irish band)
The Corrs
Anything with Irish dancing in it.
Any North or South American indigenous people's music.
Genghis Khan (an 80s German group, really excellent.)

For those who have never heard the Corrs, click here:

I grew up in the 40s and early 50s big band era and watched Bill Haley give birth to Rock and Roll and saw it evolve over the years. To me, all fast rhythmatic music is R 'n R.

These days I just want something to help me feel peaceful and contented; I'm naturally frantic enough as it is so the head banger stuff just leaves me feeling restless and frayed. Good music but just not my style anymore.

The music I play on my Indian Flute will send you on a mind trip. Once a year I give a short concert at the Paint Rock, Texas pictograph site during the winter solstice celebration there when a centuries old rock painting signifies winter solstice by a sharp-pointed beam of light hitting the exact center of a painting only at local noon on winter solstice. The tranquilizing sounds of the flute add a deep ambiance to the event.

It's not a big thing as only 100 to 150 people show up. I am not a musician and I initially did it on a lark as a tribute to these ancient ones who were exterminated by the Commanches about 300 years ago but everyone loved it and they insist that I come back and play again every year.

Paint Rock is a very peaceful and solemn place that was a hotbed of ancient astronomy as there are many paintings with astronomical meanings and I can feel their spirits when I play there. Some country and western musicians bring their guitars and sing and play but I don't think their music is appropriate for that place.

Sorry for the long post but for anyone who has any Indian blood, Paint Rock is a very spiritual place and you can feel both the wisdom and the deep sadness once you stop focusing on yourself and allow the spirits to enter your mind and soul.

It is a holy place.

Life is good.

To each his own I guess. For me, while I understand classifying for description purposes, but I can't see any other way to look at them but as subgroups under the heading of "rock". Rock is the root of all of them.

To me it's similar to country music being comprised of subgroups like bluegrass, western swing, traditional country and outlaw etc .....

To me, favorite "rock band" should be a little more general - Pink Floyd, ZZ Top and Zepplin could be viewed as too rooted in the blues to be rock, Chuuck Berry could be too "pop" to be rock, even though the riffs that led to all the different levels that led to "metal" all started with guys like him. There has to be some acceptance that all these styles aren't stand alone genres.

Metal has heavy heavy influences from classical music and punk. And Metal didn't start with guys like Chuck Berry, it started with guys like Lemmy, Ozzy and Tony Iomi's amazing guitar riffs.

I understand rock has deep roots in the blues - as for metal, while today's metal my have roots in some of the people you mentioned, Chuck Berry, Carl Perkins, Buddy Holly etc had influence on those early pioneers. It's just a progression, and it really can't all be said to come from one place - lots of influences form every genre.

I just thought the idea of this category was more broad, and not intended to exclude, metal, heavy metal, alternative metal, progressive metal, punk, grunge, new wave, garage, glam, hair bands, southern rock, acid, techno, power ballads, indie, Gothic adn on and on and on .......

learn something new everyday.

Did you think those guys evolved from the Kingston Trio and The Andrews Sisters?

Come on, the fact that music evolves from those that came before can't be a new concept for you. "Metal" didn't magically appear. Ozzy didn't just magically appear, Zepplin didn't just magically appear. The Who, The Stones, Page, Blackmore, Clapton, Steppenwolf, The Beatles, Albert King, Freddie King, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Carl Perkins, and guys we don't even know.

Where do you think Lemmy, Ozzy and Tony Iommi's originated from? Do you think they just woke up one day and there it was?

Ozzy and Lemmy both credit The Beatles with being early influences. Not sure about Iommi, but his riffs didn't just pop out of the blue. They came from his evelution from his youth listening to clearly much tamer bands and built from there. Went back and found where Iommi lists an English instrumental group and Eric Clapton's early years with John Mayhall as his influences - blues influences, not like Sabbath-like riffs, but they must have helped inspire him to experiment with the guitar.

Do you know where the term "heavy metal" comes from? Steppenwolf's "Born to Be Wild".

I think it's quite obvious that I know music evolves from those that come before. And yeah, I know Ozzy and Lemmy were influenced by the Beatles. I thought you said they were influenced by "Chuck Berry, Carl Perkins, Buddy Holly etc had influence on those early pioneers." Confused me a lil' bit there.

When I mentioned those names I was talking about the rock and roll icons from that era, and specifically the guitar legends like Berry and Perkins, and not trying to build a comprehensive chart showing the full tree that all the influences forked from that inspired those who became members of "metal" bands. Of course, since The Beatles were influenced by Chuck Berry, Carl Perkins, Buddy Holly, etc, then it's kind of hard to say those that list The Beatles as influences weren't also influenced by those guys. Guys like Berry and Perkins are where guitar riffs started. Iomme and those that came after didn't create that, they just expanded on it by adding a harder edge and a harder driving element to the riffs they came up with.

It's well known that Chuck Berry was a major influence for Keith Richards. Checking online I found that Jimmy Page lists "rockabilly" and the guitar work in some Elvis Presley tunes as influences (along with blues). Ritchie Blackmore lists Buddy Holly as an early influence. I'm sure I could find more, but it's all part of the evolution that led from the rock riffs of the past to the metal of today.

I'm always amazed how specific people want to get. rock, hard rock, metal, heavy metal ......... it's nice to have groupings to help describe a particular rock bands style, but all are still rock.

To each his own I guess. For me, while I understand classifying for description purposes, but I can't see any other way to look at them but as subgroups under the heading of "rock". Rock is the root of all of them.

Actually......
Rock has deep deep roots in blues. Like all rock.

If you re-read these posts, maybe you can understand the confusion.

Yeah when I started this thread I did mean "rock" in the general/broadest sense, or inclusive sense. I guess I should have been more specific. By saying "rock" in the first place it was just easier than saying "rock", "heavy metal", "classic rock", "death metal", "prog rock" and on and on.

The way you did it makes more sense. There are literally a hundred genres you could break rock down to, some of which are only populated by obscure bands that only a specific following are aware of. It makes sense to leave the topic broad. From the answers people will be able to tell if a person's specific tastes lies more toward the pop, classic, hard, metal punk etc ....

Yeah that's exactly what I meant to do. I was interested in what folks liked, even found about some bands I haven't heard of.

Seems to me the thread has become an argument (a little bit) about what is/isn't rock. I didn't mean for that to happen. I guess what I mean is I should have more specifically said "rock in the broadest sense" in the OP.:)

Sometimes I ain't no good at explaining what I mean with a keyboard. Sometimes I wish I could just talk to ya'll with my voice, i'm much better that way.;)

I think you did fine. I think it was pretty reasonable to assume you meant rock in a broad sense.
