More on this story

Dallas Cowboys (http://topics.dallasnews.com/topic/Dallas_Cowboys) cornerback Terenece Newman was interviewed about the team and his thoughts on next season. Here are some highlights:

Has Rob Ryan talked to you about how he’s planning to you use effectively?
It’s all collective, so he’s bringing a whole different type of defense. We’re enthusiastic, we’re going to show different looks and teams are going to have a lot of problems with it. It’s all I can give you right now.

Would you play an 18-game schedule?
I don’t want to play an 18-game schedule. Nobody does. But, regardless, there will be a deal. The thing is people are concerned about our health. It’s a dangerous sport; people end up having their careers taken, having their lives taken and being paralyzed, so for two games where guys don’t get paid, it’s not worth it.

T-New, when you guys play 18 games you will get paid for all 18 and the post season.

What is the problem, you take 2 preseason games and make them real games. With 4/5 preseason games plus 16 regular season games that is 20 games or 21 then add 3/4 post season games, you are already playing 18 games and more.

When the NFL went from 10 games to 12, people were injured and sore, but the players adapted, the same going from 12 to 14 and then 14 to 16, so it will be the same from 16 to 18.
What is the problem?

They are being paid the same amount for 18 games as they would have been paid for 16 games. From their perspective that's two games they are playing at full speed late in the season when everyone is banged up for free.

Players with existing long term contracts without question are being asked to do more than what they originally bargained for.

So why wouldn't the players want more in return for agreeing to those two extra games?

IMO a big win-win would be to add another bye week, possibly two, and thus extend the NFL season deep into the sports-dead month of February.

Players have extra time to rest, the NFL networks get to cover four more weeks of football games that count, and the entire sport makes more money.
