Let's do a poll leading up to the Oscars on the 27th.
I know most of us didn't see all of these movies, but what the heck.
This question is :
Among movies nominated for Best Picture, which TWO did you like best?
Maybe I'll use this to help me weed through the 5-6 I have not even seen yet. I'll see a couple more before the Oscars, so I'll vote later.

I voted for Inception and True Grit...the only other movie I've seen in this list is Toy Story 3.
I'm going to watch King's Speech soon....I've heard nothing but great things about it.

I don't understand the love for true grit. It was a re-make!!! And it wasn't better than the original. You can't replace the duke.

The one on that list I have seen is Inception. It was good but I wouldn't say it's oscar worthy.

I've seen Black Swan, Inception, Winter's Bone, King's Speech, True Grit and Social Network.
I voted for Inception and King's Speech. I surprised myself by going with King's Speech over True Grit. Winter's Bone was a good movie as well.

There comes a time and place that a movie can and should be redone....it shouldn't be viewed as a replacement or a critical view of the original IMO, but rather an homage to something that was special enough that newer generations should be introduced to it. That wouldn't happen without an updated version....
Bridges is outstanding, and the remake was very good.

The King's Speech
The Fighter
The Social Network
Black Swan

True Grit
Toy Story 3 (HTTYD so much better)

If we are talking animated movies,
Despicable Me is hands down the best, HTTYD was great too. TS3 just finished a wonderful series.

I've only seen three on the list. Chose Inception and Social Network.
Was a close call between Social Network and Winter's Bone for the second choice. Probably just came down to the pacing of those two.

Lmao....I feel you. While we don't share the same loyalties to Wayne, there are most definitely movies that I don't ever want to see remade. Some of them are actually in the process of being made...like The Goonies.

Jeff Bridges played a different rooster. Sorry to say that it was affected; he knew he was replacing the Duke so to me it was clear that he was crafting his performance to be somewhat different. Halee was much better than Kim Darby and the other actors were better in the major roles; except for Damon. His acting rang wrong as well. John Wayne gave a classic performance; not the best he had ever done(Quiet Man and John Fords Triology were better, to me the Shootist and Searchers were his best) but classic nevertheless. Just looking at them as movies- it may be true that overall the performances were better in the second one; but the movie itself- the Classic was better.
Yet another kick to the pills.
Line up for some more, then. I can kick all day. This version of True Grit was very well done and I enjoyed it more. Yes, I have seen and enjoyed a lot of John Wayne movies but have to give credit where its due. To not see this movie because of that reason is quite dumb.

Yeah...I normally like Damon but that was not his best effort. But as you point out Glenn did not do a great job in the role either. Maybe it is just the character that is weak.
Same with the girls character in both movies. I don't know if they wanted you to like and respect the character but IMO I found them both highly annoying.
I think that is why I always liked Rooster Cogburn better than True Grit for the most part. Hepburn and her character are just better than the snotty young girl role IMO.

That film was remade in 1966 with Alex Cord as Ringo.
I have never seen it. I will never see it. Not even to see Ann Margaret in the role of Dallas.
John Wayne's production company Batjac made a film called "The Alamo" with him in the role of Davy Crocket. It was remade in 2004 with Billy Bob Thornton as Davy Crockett.
I have never seen it. I will never see it.
I don't care who thinks it is dumb. Why should I?

A friend of mine brought over a bootleg copy of True Grit a couple of weeks ago. I have no CLUE how they can say it's not a remake of the original?
Granted, there are subtle differences, but scene-for-scene, it was the EXACT same movie.
Case in point. The character of Col. G. Stonehill in the original is played by the venerable character actor, Strother Martin. If you don't know who Strother Martin is/was, well, all I can say is, "What we've got here is, failure to communicate."
The actor that plays the part in this "remake", Dakin Matthews, so mimics Martin's performance and looks so much like him, I had to pause the DVD and search IMDB just to be sure I wasn't watching some CGI mutation-thingy.
It's not that I didn't like the movie, or was all bent out of shape that it was redone, more so just surprised it's getting the accolades it is.

Out of the movies I saw, 127 Hours kicks their ***. (The Fighter, Inception, Toy Story 3, True Grit, 127 hours). I need to catch the other ones though...
Heard black swan is mentally disturbing which makes me hesitant.
the kings speech/kids are all right are probably out of my sophistication level.
i cringe that they made a movie about facebook.
never heard of Winter's Bone.
so i think the oscar will go to facebook movie

King's Speech is definitely not out of anyone's sophistication level. It's just a good movie. Kids are all right isn't sophisticated either. If you followed Inception relatively well, no reason you shouldn't be able to follow either of those.
The most "sophisticated" movie is probably Winter's Bone, a movie about meth producers and patriarchal society in the Ozarks. It's a great movie though, my favorite of the year.
Black Swan is intense, I'll leave it at that.
