Pressing Matters: Like several positions, the cornerback spot is included in areas that could be addressed or changed this offseason. Terence Newman is scheduled to count $10 million on the books next season. While that seems pricey, he was not among the top 25 highest-paid corners in 2010 and doesn't figure to be in that range again in 2011. The Cowboys have two young corners in Mike Jenkins and Orlando Scandrick and several draft analysts are pegging the team to take a cornerback in the first round, with Nebraska's Prince Amukamara as the projected target. If that happens, it would likely be a crowded and expensive cornerback position, with three first-round picks in the fold.
2010 Evaluation: Without a doubt, the cornerback play dropped off considerably in 2010. Look no further than the NFC Pro Bowl team. Jenkins and Newman made the Pro Bowl in 2009, albeit both as alternates, but their success didn't carryover to 2010, just like the overall performance of the defense. Throw in Scandrick, and all three cornerbacks had games to forget. All of them had key plays that led to victories as well. Scandrick went through a rough stretch early in the season but picked it up in the second half of the year. His interception return for a touchdown off Peyton Manning was not only a highlight of his young career, but beneficial in the Cowboys' overtime win. In that same game, Jenkins pretty much summed up his entire rollercoaster season. He gave up several big plays to Reggie Wayne, who had 14 catches for 200 yards, but it was Jenkins' key pass deflection in overtime that led to a Sean Lee interception and eventually a game-winning field goal. When it comes to Newman's production, he was erratic at times last year, but also dealt with injuries during the middle of the season, including a rib injury that plagued his performance for about five games...
