What do people think of his #s compared to what we paid Ferg?

The Minnesota Vikings have made their first significant move in the post-Moss era.

FOXSports.com has learned that the Vikings have agreed to terms with former Bills defensive tackle Pat Williams on a three-year, $13 million deal that includes $6 million in bonus money. With incentives the contract can eventually reach $15 million.
Adding the massive Williams alongside Pro Bowler Kevin Williams gives the Vikings defensive front one of the toughest interior run defenses in the conference. Williams is familiar with Vikings defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell from their days in Buffalo and was a major force in the Bills exception defensive unit in 2004.

The Jets were also interested in his services but they were hanging tough in the Jason Ferguson sweepstakes.

Williams is 2 or 3 yrs older than Ferguson I think...both are good DT's...we got a good DT, so did Minnesota...

Let's see. Williams got $6M up front over 3 years. So the proration of his bonus alone will count as a $2M cap hit each year. Ferg's bonus spread over 5 years is $1.8M a year. As funny as it might be, the numbers are pretty much the same except Ferg got a longer deal. Ferg's deal averages $4.2M a year while Williams' deal averages $4.33M a year.

Williams is a better run stuffer and more ideally suited to be a 3-4 NT.

Ferguson is a better pass rusher and better suited to be a 1-technique DT in a 4-3 scheme.

Both are good players but I think Williams has been more consistent over his career while Ferguson is younger.

The Jets got away with a 3-year deal with a smaller SB, while Ferguson got 5 years and a larger SB.

There are pros and cons to each situation. I would have preferred Williams myself because of the 3-4 vs. 4-3 versatility but I think even Ferguson could function in that capacity.

They were both good signings.
