Meeting with local beat writers in a much smaller room on the other side sat Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones, one of the most influential voices of league management, but someone who also must plan contingencies for his own franchise as the end of the current Collective Bargaining Agreement draws closer.
After seven days of mediation with league representatives in Washington, Smith wouldn't outline whether any progress at all had been made. With the so-called "Final League Year" set to expire at the end of next Thursday afternoon, March 3, reports differ on the likelihood of a compromise being made in time, or a protracted work stoppage that could last into the fall, threatening the 2011 season.
