In meeting with reporters on Friday, owner Jerry Jones had an interesting answer to a rather common and expected question.

When asked if he anticipated the Cowboys making any roster moves before the March 3 deadline, Jones said no, but then left the door open for another.

“No, (but) there could be one exception,” Jones said. “I probably won’t do that. At this time, on our roster, there’s only one – as of that date. We have the right to do that later as well.”

So basically, Jones dismissed it but there is someone he’s got in mind...

An extension for Doug Free.

That's my guess as well.

That's my guess as well.

I'll put in a third for that notion.

We really should get the deal done. We need him badly for next season and it makes sense to get the deal now where there may be a bit of uncertainty to drive a relative "bargain". A nice big signing bonus will make it easy for Free to weather the lockout if one happens.

that makes the most sense.

i'd rather keep davis than colombo.
Not sure what accelerated hit davis's release would cause?

An extension for Doug Free.

I was thinking the same since the Cowboys don't intend on using the franchise or transition tag on him.

Maybe they want to get a deal done?

i dont know if in my mind i consider a free extension a roster move, because it involves no change in the roster. but maybe you are correct.

If I was a cynical kind of guy I would if I was Jerruh franchise tag Doug Free and draft Tyron Smith. At the end of the year I would think the staff could tell if Smith would make a top LT. If so then you tell Free you are not going to be our LT. At the end of the year if they do not think T Smith is the LT they give Free the big extension. And if I was a real SOB I would have everyone around talk up Smith even if he is not going to be your LT and then sign Free as cheap as you can without promising that he would be the LT.

Is a contract extension considered a "roster move"?

It may be in a certain sense. He would go from a pending RFA to a contracted player.

Marion Barber is due a $500,000 roster bonus on March 3.

The bonus could be delayed if the owners and players don't strike a new CBA before that date. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was asked at the Combine whether any of his players would be released soon. "No," he said. "There could be on exception, but I probably won't do that. We have the right to do that later."

My bet is on this being the speculated roster move.

Yea, I think you nailed it.

Barber is never going to see that roster bonus, so what I think Jerry is saying is that if roster bonuses are not pushed back, then Barber is gone.

My money is on Barber not being a Cowboy in 2011.

I think Free will be tendered at the highest level (a 1st and a 3rd) until he can be signed to a long term deal.

An extension for Doug Free.

I'm not sure that would follow under "we have the right to do that later."

An extension for Free would need to be done before free agency starts, right?

its like trying to figure out the German Engima machine before the Poles got the key. Jerruh speak would drive any cryptoanalyst nuts.

An extension for Doug Free.

Regardless of the CBA we've gotta get this done
