View Full Version : Best All-Sports Cities (metro areas)

DFWJC

Of the 42-44 cities (metro areas) that have some representation in at least one of the 4 major pro sports leagues, only 12 have representation in all four leagues.

If we take a broader list of all of the most popular sports in the USA :

NFL
NBA
MLB
NHL
NASCAR
Div 1 Footaball
Div-1 Basketball
Major League Soccer
PGA
and then maybe one of Minor L BB, WNBA, or horse-racing or something.

What city or metro area has the best all-around sports representation?

Make a case for your at least one of your choices.

Just to get it started, I'll be a homer and make a case for DFW (though I think they may come up short of 1-2 others). Also, let's not stretch the metro area out 50 miles or something crazy.
Sorry, I just noticed that we can only pick one...my other pick was NYC metro area.

NFL:
Dallas Cowboys

NBA:
Dallas Mavericks

MLB:
Texas Rangers

NHL:
Dallas Stars

NASCAR:
Two major Sprint Cup Races

Div-1 Football:
TCU, SMU, UNT

Div-1 Basketball:
TCU, SMU, UNT, UTA?

MLS:
FC Dallas

PGA:
The Colonial, Bryon Nelson Classic

Minor League BB:
Frisco RoughRiders

-----------
Not bad!
Few cities have that kind of versatilty...plus all 4 major teams have made it to the finals (two have won titles) in the last 20 years. Add in all of the other big sports and you have a nice mix.

I just noticed that maybe Detroit could have sqeezed in that list oo..maybe even Houston.

wow. I am missing something ---does the New York City not have a single D1 football program?
I know for D-1 hoops they St John's and I think Columbia may be D-1.
I guess in this poll they be able to claim Rutgers (but that not even in the same state).

Obviously LA does not have the number one sport--Pro Football. But they surely have it soon and they seem to have everything else except maybe NASCAR.

Boston is loaded and so is the Chicago area....as is Phoenix.

No, and as far as I'm concerned they don't have a pro football team because their teams (sadly) play in my state. I wish New York would take them back.

Also, Manhattan College is D-1 Basketball. But, I'm pretty sure NYC doesn't have a D-1 team. Jersey has a 1 & 1-AA (or whatever its called now). New York State has some D-1 Football teams, but not the city.

Hard to top Boston and New York for professional sports....LA is a contender given the number of collegiate national championships won in the area, but not having a professional NFL team kills that idea IMO.

Boston FTW.

well, this is technically about metro area not city, therefore you would include most of northern NJ and southwestern Connecticut, and therefore it includes Rutgers. they dont have any golf in new york, but they will have the super bowl and one of the four biggest tennis tournaments in the world. id say its close between southern cal, new york and north texas

Forgot about Forest Hills...

UConn would be too far away from NYC in my book but maybe not Rutgers. Either way, if one was included that would give them a D-1 football program.
Then of course, they double down in almost all of the "major" sports with 2 teams. I still put hockey ahead of NASCAR but all of the latest stats don't list it that way anymore....it has moved ahead of hockey on a national level. Just seems odd though.

If your still discussing hoops then yes, NYC has a couple of D-1 teams.

Detroit.

The Pistons are terrible. Even when DFW teams are bad, fans turn out in droves.

Can you count OU and OSU in DFW as well, since so many North Texas folks are fans of those programs? OKC doesn't have an MLB team (and should, IMO...) so I can't see why you couldn't.

You could make a case for Pittsburgh. They don't have an NBA team but Oakmont is far and away the best golf course in a major metro area, second place isn't even close.

I could see them making the top 13-14 anyway....which is pretty good out of 42+ cities.
Without having a team in the top 4 major sports, you kind of get eliminated from the top 10 immediately. LA would be the exception b/c they have so much else.

I'd say if this was a per capita thing, Pittsburgh would be even higher.

Oakmont is awesome from what I've been told.

Nah. If you count OKC, why not count Austin and the rest of Central Texas. Just as many UT and A&M alums if not more than OU or OSU in DFW.

Agreed. Not even close really....as everal hour drive would never been conisder to be in the same metro area.

DFW is Dallas-Ft Worth and the immediate suburbs (Plano, Frisco, South Lake, Garland, Arlington, etc).

In fact, I didn't even combine Raleigh Durham with Charlotte becasue they are too far away from each other. So that killed them with sports teams.

Cincy or Cleveland cannot claim Columbus either, for example. So that killed their NHL chances. Way too far away and seprate metro areas.

:laugh2: Good one.
I can't imagine anyone would ever say West Point is a suburb of NYC. I'm sure in a packed in metro area like that or Philly that the 50 mile rules would remotely apply....but good one nevertheless.

NYC already has about 20 million peole withing about a 20 mile radius, so I'd say they have enough by any standards.
Plus, I say they are awesome for sports anyway.

Chicago has to be up there we have;
NFL bears, went to nfc championship
NBA Da Bulls!, 2nd in the east behind boston
MLB Sox and Cubs, i hate baseball but they are popular and the Sox won the pennate in 07 i believe
NHL Blackhaws are good, won the cup last season and are 4 points out of 3rd place
NASCAR Chicago land motor speedway is a beautiful place
Div 1 Footaball NIU, EIU, Illinois state, Southern and Western Illinois
Div-1 Basketball we got Bradley, EIU, U of I, Illinois State
Major League Soccer , forget soccer but we still have Chicago Fire
PGA - Pine Meadows

We have a pretty famous farm team the Kane County Cougars, if i recall they are for the marlins

Outstanding.
You had us at "Chicago"
so no need to throw all of those D-1 schools that are not in Chicago in there.
Northwestern is though, and NIU is close enough I guess.:D

Anyway, no doubt that Chicago deserves mention of one of the very best all-around sports. All the top sports pro and college, plus, they even have a NASCAR event this year.

Oakmont is the only course in the country that could host a PGA major on one day's notice.

The only other metro areas with courses worth mentioning would be NYC with Bethpage simply because anyone can play it and Philly with Pine Valley, the consensus best course in America but one would be more likely to hit the lottery twice than get on it.

Boston Celtics...17 Championships
New England Patriots...3 Super Bowls
Boston Red Sox...7 World Series
Boston Bruins...5 Stanley Cups

New York Yankees...27 World Series
New York Mets...2 World Series
New York Rangers...4 Stanley Cups
New York Islanders...4 Stanley Cups
New York Jets...1 Super Bowl
New York Giants...3 Super Bowls
New York Knicks...2 Championships

I think everyone else is talking about 3rd place. Since other sports were also mentioned I'll throw in the US Open, one of the Tennis Grand Slam events.

Yeah, I thought I set up the the poll so we could pick two, but it didn't work out that way.

My picks were NYC and then an honorary one to DFW for the incredible diversity (not just the 4 pro sports). This was not meant to be a pro sports--who has won the most tiles thread. More of an all-around, braod brush sports thing.

But NYC would get my nod too.

If LA had a pro football team they would be up there too when through in D-1 college hoops and football, soccer, etc.

Problem in Boston is their fans.

Recent years, Celtics fans were invisible before the big 3, most Pats fans before that first SB...didn't see them.

The Sox fans are probably the most diehard, I have ever met. They had not won in several decades, but they stayed true.

However. Boston is likely the right answer.
