Since it looks like we are definately going to the 3-4 defense we need some LB's, preferably big ones. Problem is the FA LB's are disappearing fast and we need to add atleast 2. Pierce signed with the Giants, Trotter is probably going to sign with the Chiefs, and supposedly Bell has signed with the Giants. That only leaves Hartwell and Claiborne as possible unrestriced free agents linebackers who are big enough for the 3-4 (and talented enough to make an imapct). So I have an idea, why don't we steal restricted free agent Akin Ayodele from the Jaguars. If we could get him to sign he would only require a 3rd round compensation. I know we don't have a 3rd rounder, and I'm not sure how the rules work in that situation, but if we could give them next years 3rd rounder it would be a steal.

Here is some info on him.
6'2" 251lbs. 25yrs old College:Purdue NFL experience:3yrs
year__games___tackles___sacks___int____FF____FR___ def pass___def td
2002__16______66_______3______1______2_____0_____2 _________0
2003__16______115______1______2______0_____3_____2 _________1
2004__16______92_______2______0______2_____1_____2 _________0

I realize his stats are good, not amazing, but he plays the weakside in a 4-3. I think he has enogh size that he would make an excellent LB in a 3-4 (whether it is inside or outside). 6 sacks in 3 years is pretty good numbers for a 4-3 LB. I think he could be a 10-12 sack OLB in a 3-4. Also you probably noticed he is durable, he hasn't ever missed a game in his career.

I prefer my linebackers to be bigger than 151 lbs.

You know damn well what he means. :P

Anyway, I wouldn't blow a third rounder on the guy. I would give him a chance considering who his head coach is.

Honestly, how many third rounder turn out to be starters? I think he is a steal for a 3rd rounder, he is getting better every year and is still only 25.

He has experience in the 3-4 and did have 8 sacks last year, not a bad idea. I am kinda scared about the fact that he has played in the 3-4 for so long and only got one good sack total.

2000=0 (3 games played)
2001=3.5 (16 games played)
2002=3 (16 games played)
2003=4 (13 games played)
2004=8 (16 games played)

I think he would make a heck of a back up and he is maybe even a starter, but I would think of him as a last option.

I just think he would be a deal on FA. And, with his experience could be a leader to help implement the 3-4. Let us draft our future at linebacker.

2000 combine stats for Thomas ...
Ht........Wt....40 yrd...Vertical...Long jump...Bench..Shuttle...Cone
6-2-3/8 270...4.59......38-1/2"..10'0"...........dnp......4.42......dnp

Porter isn't available, you are thinking of Kendrell Bell.

Daryl Blackstock would be a steal in the second round, and he did play the 3-4 in college (quite well I might add). Problem is, while he is 6'3", he only weighs 233 pounds. If he could gain some weight I would be all for it, but 233 is to light to be a 3-4 OLB.
