Now, we all know the closest Jessica Simpson ever came to Yale is when her private jet flew over New Haven, Connecticut. But I'm gonna cut her some slack based on the fact that she never attended any school of higher education, which makes her a "free agent" of sorts when it comes to athletic apparel. Plus, no one in their right mind thinks she's trying to pull the wool over people's eyes. OTOH, if you did attend a certain college and graduate, then wearing another school's gear can be considered deliberately misleading and should be frowned upon. What say you?
P.S. Yes, I'm bored and have nothing better to do.

Doesn't work for me unless you just grew up a fan of that school.
I have a buddy that is a die-hard Gators fan...I called him out when I saw him in a UNC hat and shirt...but wait then a 'Bama cap...
Absolutely not. That would be like me wearing a Cowboys, Yankees, Pens, or UNC/Duke anything.
Never.

In todays world considering all the things that are acceptable this is not a big deal. I would also say some people will wear the gear of a school if someone they know is attending but even if she is wearing because she thinks it looks cool I would think the people at Yale would not mind.

Oh, I dunno. I'm sure there are more than a few Yale alums who are displeased when vapid celebs appropriate their gear. They earned the right to wear the Yale brand proudly; Simpson did not. Like I said, celebs get a pass because we know beforehand that they didn't attend this or that school (meaning there was no intent to deceive), but if I go jogging wearing a "Harvard Law" t-shirt, most strangers would rightly assume that I graduated from said school.

I would think the notoriety counts from something. After all the diploma is what you earned not a hoodie. For someone to want to wear your gear only means they think highly of your school or team.

I have t shirts of the schools my brother and sister went to. My school was smaller and more obscure so I'm not sure I got them anything and I sure as heck don't wear it around. Whereas I do wear gear from the place I took 3 classes at one summer and also grew up being a fan of (my mom went there).
OTOH I do understand that there's something...lame I guess about wearing a Harvard shirt if you graduated from community college or UNC if you went to Wake Forest.

Yeah, my father is a Seton Hall graduate, but he wears Wisconsin and U. of Arizona gear all the time because he has children and grandchildren who attended both schools, so that's his "waiver."

Well sure, there's misrepresenting yourself (t-shirt) and then there's fraud (Harvard diploma on wall). One is certainly more egregious than the other, but neither are desirable.

If the institution cared they would not offer their gear for sale to the general public. Simpson earned the right to wear it by paying for it (or taking it out of her boyfriend's closet).

Completely unacceptable unless your spouse, significant other, family member, or immediate local community is a member of said university.
Especially Jessica Simpson?? Wearing a Yale sweatshirt? She couldn't get into Yale Technical College if they had it.

Once again, just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. Yes, she can legally purchase and wear Yale clothing, but that doesn't make it ethical.

It's stupid. That's why I'm glad Texas Tech's clothes look sweet. It's also pretty acceptable in Texas to wear a Longhorn or Aggie shirt if you did not attend the schools. It's more a rivalry thing than anything.
I don't understand why people would wear some random school they have absolutely no affiliation with, I see them like I see people who root for a team in whose city they've never been and have no affiliation but cheer for them because they see them doing well in the playoffs.
peplaw06

I was a fan of college football and college basketball long before I went to college. I chose to root for my teams when I was a youngster. I don't think that requires that when I got to the age to be in college, I had to go to one of those schools. And I'm not changing teams in midstream.
I went to undergrad at a school with D-II sports programs, so I wasn't conflicted. And my law school never plays Duke in college basketball, so no conflict there either.
So yeah, I will wear the gear of a school I didn't attend when cheering their sports teams. I'm not going to wear a Harvard Law shirt though. I have no real reason or investment in their law school, or any other law school.

I always ask folks that wear Notre Dame stuff, " Did you go there?". You can imagine their responses.
how many of you who wear Dallas Cowboys stuff ever
played for them ?
lived in Dallas ?
been to Dallas ?
doesnt matter to me at all what school or team stuff anybody wears, if thats what they like more power to them

That's different. Unlike attending college, most of us can only dream of playing for the Cowboys, so the closest we get to them is attending games or wearing their gear. Casually wearing a Redskins t-shirt would be just as "offensive" as a Michigan fan wearing OSU stuff.

Well, I've only been a Cornhusker fan for like 2 years, but I also don't really get that into college football. Not a big deal. Besides, I'm too embarrased to wear gear from the P.O.S. college I went to..haha.

Not sure it is a big deal. I never went to UNC, but I lived in North Carolina for a couple of years and I love their basketball program. I've worn UNC stuff.
I'd wear Harvard or Yale stuff. I'd wear Texas stuff. I'm from New Mexico, I'd wear NMSU or UNM.
Is it really anyone's business what I wear?

The Class Ring means something as does the diploma on the wall. Silkscreen over cotton means you didn't want to go topless. Although I wouldn't begrudge Dukes of Hazzard Simpson for doing so.
The only pieces of apparel I have from my alma mater are a free t-shirt I got for joining a student organization, the tassel, mortar board, and graduation gown. The ring comes in time.
I could give a rat's butt fur who wears what. There was a guy in my college algebra class last year when I was running through all of the maths back up to Calculus 2 that wore everything Florida. Key lanyard, back pack, caps, shoes, jersey, etc. Sorry guy, but if you're struggling through basic math at a third rate community college, U of Florida might be a dream you need to let go. When I say struggling, I mean taking a community college level college algebra for the second time, having just had it as a senior in high school a year before.

How is this a question on ethics? Is it really that big of an ethical dilemma to have people wearing clothes with a logo in which they have no affiliation with? It is a shirt that says Yale on it. When I see a girl like her wear a shirt like that I assume she slept with someone from Yale, not that she actually went there. I doubt she wears it to dupe people into believing she attended Yale.

I'm an IU fan, ever since I was little. I've never attended classes there. I have been chased by IU police on campus, been kicked off campus by police, etc. I see no issue with wearing IU related gear. To me, it's no different than wearing pro sports gear.

If you did not want an opposing answer why ask it? :laugh2: Sorry this is nothing who cares what a person wears? This in no way damages the school or the people who attended the school.

Lots if people put college stickers on their car where I live. Almost all of them are ivy league. I've call out several of them I knew didn't attend that school.
Funny thing is, I have a neighbor who has a Boston College sticker on his car, but I know he went to Wharton. I ask him about it and he just shrugged. He is a very low key kind of guy, but for the life of me I can't figure out why he has it on there. He isn't really a college sports fan and his wife went to NYU and the car is leased. No way a dealer would lease a car with a Boston College sticker in the window.

It really doesn't bother me... I was raised to root for schools that no one in my family attended...
What I can't stand is the frontrunners that start wearing gear from the most recent National Champion or Superbowl Champion claiming to always have been a fan...
Also on state supported schools, as a taxpayer, I am financially helping support them, so I think I have a right to wear the gear if I so choose...

I don't wear t-shirts from the places I've attended. I do have some from out-of-the-way places I've visited. I regularly wear stuff from my daughter's colleges (none of them known for athletics).
I do know some people who are major fans of college football programs with which they have no personal or familial connection. For some reason it strikes me as a bit odd (not sure why), but it isn't a big deal.

I understand wearing gear of a school you didn't attend when it based on being a fan of a schools athletic programs. College athletics are spectator sports and have a following just like pro sports, and the schools, conferences and NCAA all promote that. As for Jessica Simpson wearing a Yale pullover - is she a fan of their chess club? I don't quite get that.

My dad wears Maryland gear(since I had attended there as well as he did for law school), and had attended Washington and Lee University in VA. So yeah naturally I guess if it's in your family you are allowed to wear different school gear. I wear UMD Terps hoodies, and tshirts and nothing else.
