Jerry said in the PC that after Rivera, we will likely go more low key in free agency.

There are several DE prospects in that 11 to 25 range in the draft. Ferguson fits our 4-3 scheme just as well as he would NT in the 3-4. We have the makings of a pretty good rotation with Ellis, Ferguson, Glover, a draft pick, Coleman, Carson, Blade and Ogbogu. You can even throw Thornton in there on passing downs.

Factor in the money we spent on Henry and not making a run at any 3-4 LBs or DEs, tells me we are sticking with the 4-3 for at least another year.

Might be that you're right. If you draft a guy like Merriman, it doesn't matter much, since he can line up at DE this year (staying at 270 lbs, which is what he weighed in at, at the Combine) and move to OLB next year (maybe moving back down to 255).

If the Cowboys are serious about going to 3-4, I'm thinking they would have at least signed Kendrell Bell or Edgerton Harwell. Bell is already gone and the Cowboys have yet to be linked to Hartwell. Mix in the types we have on the defensive line who won't work as well in a 3-4, and I agree with you, the 4-3 is staying.

That proves me wrong. I was convinced we were at least going to split the 4-3 and 3-4, but I guess not.

I guess it is actually a good thing because that leaves less things we need in the offseaon. Instead of having to go after a bunch of 3-4 personnel, we can keep what we got and add a DE for the 4-3. So it seems that with the 4-3, we are better off.

I do not see a decision made.

We still have a $10M FA to spend and many 3-4 parts in draft!

We will play both for sure.

Parcells decides, not JJ.

I agree, I don't think the FA signs really point to anything yet other than the ability to possibly play both.

I am afraid that Bill will try to go 3-4 with that group of crappy LBers though and it could be a real mess.

With our guys right now I really cannot see us playing a 3-4. We'd have to get Heartwell and also get a DE and maybe even another LB in the draft to facilitate the change. I think 4-3 would fit us much better, just imagine the D-line we'd have!

I've got a huge fear that it may happen too but I think Bill will be realistic. One of his strengths has always been the willingness to change the gameplan to fit the talent he works with.

I bet we have 3 of our 4 LB for the 3-4 already in place. Thornton will be on the outside with Dat at an ILB spot; Shanle will man one of the other slots (I had been thinking OLB but now I think ILB instead). So we draft Merriman, Pollack or Spears and we have the full LB corp. I know that many are going to snear at the idea of Shanle as a starter but watch and see; the kid is a player. Remember we just signed a 7th round draft pick (in Ferguson) for megabucks; sometimes those guys work out.

I agree I think we will use the base 4-3 defense and will be able to use the 3-4 as a situational defense.

Telling quote from the Mosley article:

Ferguson, a 6-3, 305-pounder, will immediately take his place in the middle of what could be a 3-4 defense. Parcells drafted Ferguson, 30, in the seventh round of the 1997 draft. He played his first four seasons with the Jets in a 3-4.

Ferguson said, however, that HE WOULD RATHER PLAY IN A 4-3 ALIGNMENT. "It's more aggressive for a defensive lineman," he said.

I would rather play golf every day, but my boss would rather have me come into work.

3-4 NT IS LESS GLORIOUS THATS FOR SURE. Fergi is getting a little caught up in the moment. Its not like he's ever had 5 sacks in a season :D

Dig in Fergi. Double teams coming your way!

BZ, are you insinuating that JJ and BP "pulled a Wiley" on Ferguson, assuring him we would stay with the 4-3?

No, I'm saying that it further points to us staying in a 4-3.

The fact that he can play NT in a 3-4 does not change the fact that he was a better player in the 4-3.

It also keeps our two best players on our DL where they play best, without gambling that they can play a new position.

It also keeps us from needing a HUGE leap from players like Carson, Coleman, Thornton, Shanle, James, and Fowler.

We are ready for a 3-4 if you assume Shanle, Thornton and James are ready to be impact level players. You can't assume we will get several impact LB's in the draft. I think we stay base 4-3 and mix in a little 3-4 based on circumstances.

IMO, our talent along the defensive line EASILY outweights our talent at linebacker, so I would think our base defense will remain 4-3 with a mix of 3-4 here and there.

I think BP really wants to move to a 3-4 with the influx of LB'ers we had last year, but we just don't have the talent to do it right now.

One thing is for sure, we have filled some major holes already and we have 3 big draft picks early to make some more noise with. Times are good!!!!!
