Greg Cosell’s observation that teams with needs at quarterback could reach for quarterbacks in round one of the draft has caused us to wonder whether the raw number of quarterbacks taken in round one could eclipse the all-time record for first-round quarterbacks.

The high-water mark came in 1983, when six quarterbacks became first-round picks: John Elway, Todd Blackledge, Jim Kelly, Tony Eason, Ken O’Brien, and Dan Marino (pictured).

In 28 years since then, only one class had as many as five. In 1999, Tim Couch, Donovan McNabb, Akili Smith, Daunte Culpepper, and Cade McNown exited the board in round one. All five were picked in the first 12 selections, with the next quarterback — Shaun King — drafted 38 spots later.

thats very true chocolate lab, but this way, if some teams reach for a qb, and some possibly might, that will push a player or 2 down to us in lst and 2nd round. :starspin

99 was not a good class. McFlabb was the best; Culpepper had some good years and the rest stank it up. I think that is what we will get this year. I pick Gabbert as the best, maybe having a McFlabb like career. Newton will be lucky to be as good as Culpepper was. The others probably will bust.

Since we won't be drafting one in the first, they all have to suck, right?!?! Hindsight is always 20/20, QB is by far the most important position in modern football, and if we ignore developing them, then we will continue to look like we have looked in the last decade or more.

Very unlikely to happen.

But teams could start reaching for a qbs. Especially ones trying to trade up into the bottom of the 1st round because they missed out on a QB in the 1st.

Newton - Top 10
Gabbert- Top 10
Locker- 1st round
Mallett- 1st round talent. Character issues, will someone take a chance?
Ponder- 2nd round. I've seen him listed in a few mocks in the 1st.
Dalton - 2nd round. Moving up draft boards, he's a hot name right now.

1983 was never matched as far as I can tell.
