Part of a two part series, in this one, we flip out our spot at 9. In Part II, I'll be trading up for Peterson.
Here we go.
Trade DOWN: Pick 9 to St Louis for Picks 14 and 113
St Louis Selects: Julio Jones, WR
14. Tyron Smith, OT, USC
Picks Left: 40, 71, 78, 110, 112, 143, 176, 220 and 252
Cowboys still land their tackle, after trading back 5 spots.
---
Trade DOWN:: Pick 40 to Oakland for Picks 48 and 113
Oakland Selects: Colin Kaepernick, QB
48. Kenrick Ellis, DE/NT, Hampton
Picks Left: 71, 78, 110, 112, 143, 176, 220 and 252
Raiders are hot after Kaepernick and want to get ahead of the Redskins who also like him. We get a very versatile big man with great athleticism for his size who can both anchor and pass rush.
---
Trade UP: Picks 71 and 112 to New England for Pick 60
New England: Collects Picks
60. Will Rackley, OG, Lehigh
Picks Left: 78, 110, 142, 176, 220 and 252
Rackley has been rising up boards, and it's well known the Steelers have interest as well. We move ahead of them, into the tail of the 2nd round, and select our starting OG.
---
78. Johnny Patrick, CB, Louisville
Picks Left: 110, 142, 176, 220 and 252
Cowboys have shown interest, inviting him for a one on one visit. Patrick is not a burner, but has drawn a lot of interest around the league. He's physical and gets his hands on a lot of balls.
---
Trade UP: Picks 110 and 220 to Buffalo for Pick 100
Buffalo: Collects Picks
100: Cecil Shorts III, WR, Mount Union
Picks Left: 142, 176, 252
Fearing the long list of receiver hungry teams ahead of our spot, we trade up 10 spots to nab Shorts, another player we've shown noteworthy interest in.
---
142. Shiloh Keo SS, Idaho
Picks Left: 176, 252
We haven't yet invited Keo in for an interview, and I'm not sure why not, but he'd be a great guy to have in your toolbelt if nothing else. A hard worker with great hips and special teams experience. He'd be good in that SS role for Ryan's 46 Defense, playing close to the line. Plays physically and with passion, a natural leader.
---
176. Greg McElroy, QB, Alabama
Picks Left: 252
I think of all the teams out there, McElroy is most likely to wind up a Cowboy. I have no idea what this means for our current backups, but they can figure that out in camp.
---
252. Nick Bellore, ILB, Central Michigan
Yet another guy we've brought in that figures to be a late pick, Bellore was extremely productive at Central Michigan.
Cowboys 2011 Draft Class
Tyron Smith, OT, USC
Kenrick Ellis, DE/NT, Hampton
Will Rackley, OG, Lehigh
Johnny Patrick, CB, Louisville
Cecil Shorts III, WR, Mount Union
Shiloh Keo SS, Idaho
Greg McElroy, QB, Alabama
Nick Bellore, ILB, Central Michigan
I did my best with the math of the trades using the value charts, I think it all works out in that sense. I actually didn't enter with any preconceived notions of who I'd select, and I tried to involve a lot of guys we've actually brought in for work outs. The only guy on the list that the Cowboys haven't brought in is Keo.
I think it turned out pretty damn good for us, actually.
Thoughts?
