View Full Version : Dallas Mavs Playoff thread

A little reminder regarding the Mavs:
There are three teams in NBA HISTORY that have won 50+ games in 11 straight seasons.
Lakers (Magic era) , Spurs (Duncan era), Mavericks (Nowitzki era)
-------
Now on to the playoffs.
At present, the Mavs are up on the Blazers 2-0 in the series.
I thought the series would go 7, and it still could due to a nearly impenetrable home court advantage in Portland.
But in the end, I see the Mavs' depth + Dirk as being the difference.
It allows them to search until they find another scorer besides Dirk each night and their defense is greatly improved.
After round one....I won't make a prediction due to homerism :D

The mavs are really playing well and blew my prediction out of the water.
Hopefully my Spurs can start playing to that level.

Game 3 is gonna be massive for the mavs, if they can pull it off it would end the series early and give their old guys a rest b4 the second round

Dallas really needs to end this series early if at all possible, its a close game at the moment but if we can end it in 5 we will be better prepared to take on LA. I am hoping the hornets take LA to 6 or 7, so they will have been worn down a little bit while the mavs will have been resting. Hoping for that scenario anyway.

sorry to say, this series is going 6 or 7 (as ive said all along) but i think i might be leaning towards mavs in 7 now rather than blazers in 6. i have a feeling home team might win every game. game 5 is gonna be very interesting

That's the most likely scenario, but if we win the second away game for the split and come home to end it in 5 or 6. I am never usually one to complain about the refs but tonight they had a big influence. So many non-calls, the little calls didnt go our way but that happens. A fan literally got in Jason Terry's way, Kidd hit a late 3, a gigantically important three and they called it a two. The mavs must improve their defense, they HAVE to stop those turnovers though, they were big. Free throw shooting was bad down the line. Thats a recap, the Blazers have more energy and needed a win and they got it.

come on now! the refs had nothing to do with it, are you kidding? the mavs have more free throw attemps and less foul calls. if you wanna blame anything it might be their uncharacteristically bad free throw shooting, i was close to 50%.
i just dont see the mavs winning game 4, the blazers have a great home court advantage
ps you really shouldnt be overlooking the blazers! classic mavs fan!! lol

Yeah
I see a 7 game series...as I have from day one.
It's hard for any team to beat Portland at the Rose Garden. The Mavs gave it a decent shot, but I think they will have to home court to win this series.

As a former Mavs fan who still watches most of their games but is now somewhat disinterested, I think the Mavs win the next game at Portland. They did lose last night, but it was a very tough game with a good home team simply beating them... There weren't any signs of a collapse as in some past years.

You won't find a team that hasn't complained about the refs, the mavs are just more well known because of the Miami fiasco. The mavs got the ref advantage in game one. The refs weren't the reason the mavs lost that game, the loss was a combo of turn overs, bad free throw shooting and the great energy by the Blazers and their fans, tough atmosphere to play in for any team. NO one is over looking the blazers, nobody wanted to play them when the matchups were set and the mavs got them and we fully expected everything they had and for it be a dog fight to finish, I still fully expect the mavs to win the series.

Just givin' y'all a little bit of a hard time.
Playoff-time smack talk between Mavs and Spurs fans is a long-time tradition here in the Sports Zone. Doubtful that we'll get to face off against each other this year (it'd be cool if it happened, though) so might as well get as much done while we can.

i dont, the same thing was being said about game 2 after game 1 in dallas, people overrate carryover in games during the playoffs, the only time that is really true is if there is an injury that causes bad play (obviously) or if its a heartbreaking loss, like the .4 shot in 04 against the spurs

That has to be the 2nd biggest choke Ive seen by the Mavs. Still not as bad as when the mavs lost to the lakers a few years back at LA. This goes down to Carlisle's coaching. Did you read the thread...he said if the Spurs lose to the Grizzlies, at least he has past success to look back on and help lift his spirits a bit....unlike the Mavs. That is the relevance.
BTW, that was a brutal defeat. I stopped watching early in the 3rd when the Mavs started to blow the game away. I thought for sure they had won. I checked the score just as the Spurs game was starting and saw the Mavs actually lost....BTW, I know how Mavs fans feel. A few years ago, the Spurs blew a 17 pt and 20+ pt second half lead in two games in the WCF to the Lakers....very very frustrating. One of those losses was when Fisher tackled Barry and didn't get called for the foul....oh well, we choked those two games away and lost the series. If I am not mistaken, LA went on to lay an egg against the Celtics in the Finals....which made the results of the WCF even more frustrating.

No big deal MC
I feel like Charley Brown trying to kick the football and the Lucy keeps pulling it up.:o: Funny but sad.
Big picture-wise. they were on the road and not favored to win. It's just the way they lost.
If they hold court, they advance.
BTW, there was serious home-court offciasting, btw. But Mavs fans have no cred to fall back on that stuff anymore. You can only go to that old well but so often and all road teams deal with it.
They just have to regroup and win on Monday or Portland will win this series. What a turn of events.

ya, the officiating wasnt exactly fair in the fourth, i think they got carried away with the crowd/roy and started favoring the home team. this is how i thought it would go tho, game 5 is gonna be awesome! i still think the mavs will win that one, but they better hope this brandon roy stays in portland

ya, i still think we would have won that series had manu not broken his ankle, that was probably our last realistic title shot. the main reason i say that is because defense is now atrocious, we have slowly morphed into the phoenix suns, great regular season team, terrible post season team, and its because we rely on the three too much

Lol sounds like our NFC East rivals when talking about the Cowboys, and we say the exact same thing to them when the Giants talk about their superbowl. A cowboy fan should know better! Mavs and Cowboys haven't done crap in a very long time, Mavs had that one 06 fiasco but hey it is a new year and we match up well with LA. Kobe is wounded, not sure how long he can go on that ankle but hes a beast so who knows.
Its more like mavs=cardinals than cowboys r giants or anyone else in the NFC east. Btw I'll be cheering for the mavs this series, really hope rody b plays, the lakers struggle against quick point guards

Well that's good, we need all the will power we can get in this series, it will definitely be tough, no doubt.
Unfortunately Roddy B is not even close to being a PG, he actually just got back to action, dressed for the last game vs the blazers but I don't think he played much, if at all. He will get time, he is only a scorer for us at this point of his career. JJ Barea on the other hand is a quick, sneaky, speedy PG and will be the primary guy when Kidd is resting so I hope he burn Fischer all day lol
Our bigs match up extremely well with the Lakers more so than any other team i9n the west, maybe even league. Kidd and Fischer should cancel out, then Kobe and Dirk should as well so it comes down to the rest and Dallas happens to the have the deepest bench in the league but the Lakers have Odom and Gasol, Terry could, if he plays well, cancel out Odom. Gasol will be a problem, Caron's injury seriously wounded us because he was our #2 so Marion needs to beast it up, and he has played very well down the stretch.
Our Centers should give them problems. Tyson Chandler, Brandon Haywood, Ian Mahimi are three good centers, two of which can start on many teams in the league. I cant eat to see the matchups and how they play us.

My biggest worry is Bynum... He's too strong for Chandler usually so Chandler has to step up... Haywood guards him well but then our offense struggles with Haywood.
So what I'm hoping for is our depth at center with Chandler/Haywood wear down Bynum over a series.
Dirk is better than Pau so aint worried bout him. I would like to see what Brewer can do guarding Kobe then we have Stevenson/Brewer/Kidd we can put on him and stay fresh.

With Kobe, you have to help no matter what.....a team effort is required, big time.

Best thing to with Kobe (unless you have Bruce Bowen or 2004 taushawn prince on your team) is to shut down his team mates and make him take stupid shots. The more shots he takes, the better chance the mavs have. I hope roddy b plays because he would cause a lot of problems for Derek fisher on D. I think Chandler can neutralize Bynum, Kobe is gonna be Kobe, but if dirk takes gasol to the woodshed on O it's gonna affect him offensively. The big question mark is what you guys will do with odom, he is a nightmare matchup! I hope you guys win in 6, because the lakers won't lose a game 7 at home. Also I can then cheer for Memphis to win the other series
DFWJC
05-01-2011, 01:14 PM
Butler would help, but I can't see him being ready yet.
It may turn out that Marion draws Odom and the bunch of guys rotate on Kobe. Oddly, Peja may will be in the mix somehow with Odom. He and Terry can get people to have to chase them on D. The bench needs to outscore the Lakers bench....maybe by a lot.
They'll rotate Odum and Gasol on Dirk and double a lot.
Pick your poison with LA. It's a tough matchup for Dallas but doable if everything falls right.
MC KAos
05-01-2011, 01:53 PM
Odom is such a tough match up! I think even finding a decent defender for Kobe is easier. You can try Marion, but odom will post him up, he could take dirk and Chandler off the dribble. Maybe Ian steps up, very doubtful tho. Brandon bass would be nice right about now

Marion is going to be vital to us winning game, he will probably take on Kobe most of the time, I really wish we played Brewer more last series so we could see what he could do but I think if he plays how he capable of playing, he could relieve Marion for some minutes. Although I see Stevenson and Marion being our main defenders.
IF Peja and Kidd hit their open threes which they will get, it will be very tough to beat us on that night. Dirk will be Dirk, Kobe will be Kobe. The rest is a guess at this time.
They have never played in the playoffs so it will be very interesting.

Dallas doesn't stand a chance. Kobe/Dirk will both probably average between 25-30 points on average for the series, it will come down to supporting casts. Kobe has a better supporting cast than Dirk. Much better. I just don't see Dirk getting enough help.

A lot of Cowboys players are Lakers fans. The only one that is obnoxious about it is Jesse Holley. I can't stand that guy. :laugh2: No way kidd fouled gasol. The only reason he lost the ball is because he wanted the cheap foul from getting bumped by kidd when he was chasing kobe. after the point of contact, gasol held the ball perpendicular to the ground, and then proceeded to hold the ball until he flailed his arms looking for the foul. The only possible foul could have come when kidd was holding on to kobe's hips on the start of that play.

I have to agree, I think it would be very hard for them to come back down two, they already came back being down one with the Hornets, granted they are no where near as good as the Mavs are. Plus if we steal another in LA, win at least two at home, we are good to go.

Yes sir! Our bench prevailed, just as I expected, what I didnt expect was the fail from Artest, and the bad finish from Gasol. I hope we have the same game plan and the lake show doesn't correct anything lol
A laker fan (amongst mav fans) at work said they gift wrapped that game for us but I have a hard time believing that Phil Jackson, who wants that 3-peat would throw a game, at home against a legit contender. I've watched the Lakers and I just don't see the energy from that team to come back. I think they are done. They need to be eliminated and they need to go for a season or so where they don't have post season. They need to get younger, especially at guard IMO. The only one who looks like they have energy are Bynum and Odom and Bynum is still injured so it's really not an explosive energy.
Kobe, Fish and Gasol all look tired. Artest isn't hitting anything and the frustration is showing up in his game.
I love Fish but I think the Lakers need to get themselves another starting PG, move Kobe to the two and get some quality depth in the backcourt. Neither Brown, Barnes nor Blake are really helping in their play. None of them can hit a 3 to save their lives. Bring in a good PG and move Fish to the bench and you help that situation out a lot IMO. Anyhow ....

The only thing that can save Los Angeles at this point is Kobe going off over the final five games, and I just don't think he has it in him anymore to carry a team by himself. He doesnt have the same lift he used to, can't get to the rim as effectively as he once did and is entering the jumpshooting phase of his career. Pau is playing like a scrub, Odom has been a non-factor, Artest has caught the crazy again, Barnes and Blake have been worthless, and Bynum is nevr going to take over and will his team offensively to a victory.

The Mavs are playoff chokers and will get killed by the Lakers in the playoffs. Well that is if they dont choke in the 1st round again.
id rather have the spurs, lakers, celts, magics or bulls bench ANY day!! id rather have mike miller, the only decent bench guy in miami, over ANY of the mavs bench players
and thats beside the point that rotations get shortened to 8 or 9 players during the playoffs, so its really only the top 3 or 4 bench players that contribute, and from where im sitting, id rather have george hill, antonio mcdyess and gary neal over any three mavs bench warmers you can come up with

Perhaps if all players were in their prime, but as of right now this is simply not true. Fisher is done and is more useful as moral support than as a player at this point, Artest and Odom are shells of their former selves, Kobe is entering the late jump-shooting stage of his career and doesnt have the same quickness he used to, Pau has been declining since early this season, and Steve Blake wouldnt even make the Mavericks roster. Matt Barnes is a clown who is more concerned with his rep than playing basketball and Shannon Brown is a nice little bench player who thinks he is an all-star and takes a ton of ill-advised shots. Bynum is playing very well, but he just doesnt have the skill set to take over a series by himself.
Meanwhile, Dirk is at the absolute height of his game, Terry and Chandler are playing as well as they ever have, Barea has developed into a fine little player who knows his role and has outplayed both Fisher and Blake, and Peja has apparently found the fountain of youth in Dallas. Jason Kidd is old and not what he once was but is still by far the best point guard between the two teams. Marion is, well, not close to what he once was but is about on par with Artest.
Through three games Dallas has three of the four best players in this series, and none of them are named Kobe Bryant.

Kobe is tired from carrying this team all year.
Odom and Bynum are the only guys that look like they want to play.
Fisher is too old to be effective as a perimeter defender anymore.
Calling my shot early, but I think Pau Gasol is finished. I don't think he'll ever recover and I think he's in epic freefall as far as diminishing skills.
Lakers need to get another big and get younger at PG. Shannon Brown needs to work on his long range jumper this off-season, because he's definitely got the quickness to slash and get to the bucket.
If Bynum can finally get healthy, the Lakers have a pretty damn good center...but they need another powerful inside guy.
Odom should play 35-40 minutes a game. Inexcusable that he's been coming off the bench this long - his length allows him to do things around the bucket against players similar to what Turkoglu and Rashard Lewis did for the Orlando Magic a few years back.
At any rate, they're done, and I think any championship hopes in the near future are done too -- the Miami Heat is the frontrunner, and will only get better this off-season.
Calling my shot early, but I think Pau Gasol is finished. I don't think he'll ever recover and I think he's in epic freefall as far as diminishing skills.
Not to defend the Lakers, but Pau Gasol finished? Epic freefall diminishing skills? He averaged nearly 19 points and over 10 boards a game this year. Statistically, it was one of his best seasons ever.

Through three games Dallas has three of the four best players in this series, and none of them are named Kobe Bryant.
i think you are right, i was thinking they would be as good as last year individually, but obviously they havent been. its crazy how fast players age in the NBA

while i agree for the most part with your roster breakdown, your last sentence is completely false. in 05, amare was averaging 35+ points a game vs the spurs and they were down 0-3 anyway. he is dominating the mavs, but dirk is dominating gasol and the rest of the matchups have mostly gone to the mavs

Ehh. Your comparison of the dominance of Amare to Bynum is quite misleading. Bynum has only averaged 15.7 pts and 9.3 rbs per game for the last 3 games. Those numbers are by no means "destructive", especially to the 35+ pt comparison of Amare. They are just solid numbers for a starting center in the playoffs.

Parcellism. You are what your record says you are. In the Lakers vs the Mavs case as of right now. The Lakers are 0-3. To argue any point that the Lakers are better than the Mavs is pointless. You've already lost. (thus far)
That can change going forward, but as that is extremely unlikely considering no team has ever comeback for an 0-3 deficit in the entire history of the NBA. (well over 60+ years)
...of course, records and history are made to be broken...

I hope we can get it done Sunday and wrap the series up with a nice sweep then hopefully, hopefully OKC and Memphis goes 7 so Kidd can get nice and rested, along with everyone else and go after it in the conference finals. Kidd RESPONDS to rest, its insane. We sat him most of the last week of the season and he went beast mode against the blazers.
Side note, I know Caron Butler said he could return in the playoffs then they rules him for Portland and he almost got cleared for LA until getting ruled out so has anyone heard of a conference finals return? I think its doubtful, and even if he did he might take a while to get back to form regardless.

We should
Mavs Fans: Who would you prefer to face in the western conference finals? Thunder or Grizzlies?
The Grizzlies, mainly because Dallas has nobody who can guard Russell Westbrook and the Grizzlies play a similar style as Los Angeles with more athleticism and minus an elite perimeter scorer.
Memphis gave Dallas more trouble in the regular season, but two of their three wins came before Rudy Gay and Xavier Henry got hurt, one was when Dirk was out and this is a much better Mavericks team than the one they beat in the regular season. The bottom line is that Memphis just doesnt have the horses to score with this current Mavericks team on a consistent basis. They'll defend the three better, but they have nobody who can guard Dirk. Gasol is not quick enough and Dirk regularly abused Randolph when he was with Portland. Battier is their best option, and Dirk will just shoot over him like he has his whole career when various teams have tried Battier on him.
The30YardSlant
05-09-2011, 12:21 AM
Thunder, Memphis already took they the Spurs so they're kinda scary
San Antonio is old, slow, unathletic and lacks outside shooting. Tony Parker has lost the quickness that once defined him and Duncan is about a year away from being just another role player. Outside of Ginobili, they just don't have anyone who can create anymore.
Dallas has many more scoring options, a star at the top of his game and several players (Barea, Terry, Nowitzki) who can still drive the bucket and get their own shots.

The NBA should suspend Bynum for a year. Not only was that an extremely cheap and dirt shot with intent to injure, his response to it afterwards shows how big a POS he is.
As for Odom, he should get the normal response. One game suspension. You could see he was frustrated. He clearly didn't have intent to injury like Bynum did and he was very apologetic after the game.

The NBA is corrupt from head to toe. The owners need to sweep out the NBA corporate office brass and all of the referees and start over. They ruin the game. I was a HUGE NBA fan up until the corruption and taint really started to bleed out onto the courts around 2002.

first, you guys arent in the finals yet, second you are ALREADY complaining about what the refs COULD call the games? i bet you guys think osama is still alive and princess diana was murdered by the queen of england too
Hey look!
Catch17 is back.
Enjoy is man ....... enjoy it.

so your saying a guy should be suspended for a whole YEAR because he made a hard foul? :lmao2:
that is insane, stephen jackson went to the STANDS and punched a fan!! he wasnt even suspended a whole season. 2-5 games is what he should get
You damn right he should be suspended for a year. He had full intent to injure. He could have easily caused serious injury. You are a DAMN FOOL if you think otherwise. This is a professional sport, not some pickup street basketball game.
As for Stephen Jackson. He should have been ban from the NBA. That is absolutely something that shouldn't be tolerated.
This is my whole point at the fact that the NBA is corrupt and are ruining the game. The NBA front office and corrupt refs have made the NBA a ghetto league.
btw, it's not YOU GUYS here. I'm already stated that I hate the NBA. The Mavs *were* my team at one point. Right now, I just want Dirk to win a championship. He is a great guy and one of the best players in the game. He should have already had one in 2006, but....

its a bit extreme to want a guy suspended that long, as bad as that move was. terry punched michael finley in the balls, do you think he should have been suspended a whole year? because thats a lot worse than what bynum did
