What is average NFL player’s career length? Longer than you might think, Commissioner says

Commissioner Roger Goodell clarified a myth about the average career length of an NFL player during a recent conference call with season ticket holders of the San Diego Chargers.

One fan on the conference call said she has read many times that the average career length of an NFL player is about three years, adding it seemed so many played much longer than that. She asked Commissioner Goodell about his knowledge of NFL career length.

“There is a little bit of a misrepresentation or a misunderstanding on that. Frequently, it is said that the average career is about 3.5 years. In fact, if a player makes an opening day roster, his career is very close to six years,” Commissioner Goodell said. “If you are a first-round draft choice, the average career is close to nine years. That 3.5-year average is really a misrepresentation. What it adds is a lot of players who don’t make an NFL roster and it brings down the average.”

According to a recent NFL Management Council analysis of players who entered the NFL between 1993 and 2002, the average career length for a player who is on his club’s opening-day roster as a rookie is 6.0 years...

I've tried to explain this for years.

Yeah, that sounds more likely. I mean you see how long some of those real duds hung on like McQ and HE who SHALL remain NAMELESS (who was a part of Free Reign if you want a hint)

It isn't as if 6 years is a long time or even 9 years for a 1st round pick. It is still much shorter time span than most other professions. Of course they make a good amount of money in that short time. And if they are wise they can pursue some other career after football and still be making some cash. They don't have to sit around doing nothing once football is behind them.

I have made that same argument. its the bottom 10-12 players that get churned on a regular basis. some last one year.

the 9.5 years makes sense for 1st rounders and they are the ones making 98% of the money over time.

I've tried to explain this for years.I have always thought you had a good handle on how you do explain it too.

The smart ones might, but, there are a lot dumb players in the league. Look what happened to the Hambricks for instance...

Hell, look at our own Dez for instance...already have cash problems!

It's only the mediots who perpetuate the 3.5 year thing, any rational person could figure out that it was actually longer for real players.

So one side wants to include UDFA that sign with clubs but are cut and the other does not?

Sounds like the expenditures and stadium credits nonsense.

Even if 3.5 years was accurate, or even if it was 1.5 years, it's a stupid argument to make. Are people supposed to feel sorry for people that ONLY get to play football in the NFL for a few years while making a lot of money? Are we suppose to feel for them because they're not good enough to last, so we should feel they need to make more money? What kind of logic are they trying to use that this argument has anything going for it?

My NFL career is 0 years, so the NFL should give me a little something I think. Actually, a lot of something.

Exactly...maybe there should be a class action suite now, for all traveling to Vegas on a regular basis and don't return with a guaranteed percentage of cash flow as well. Geeze...hey, the odds and percentages would be much, much more to their disenfranchised and group unprotected advantage. Then maybe the State and Regional Lotteries could be attacked next....
