Cowboys' Draft: Cornering the Corner Profile

Today we look at cornerbacks, with some reference to Dallas' 2010 draft board. Recall, that the team entered that draft with corner high on the list, and the depth at corner and the depth of the team's initial pick (27th) made the position one most connected in mocks. Devin McCourty, Kyle Wilson and Kareem Jackson were players of interest. When the board was exposed, here's how they fell:
1-8 Joe Haden, 5'10", 190 lbs., 4.35 1-7,
1-18 Kyle Wilson, 5'10", 190 lbs., 4.43 1-29
2-25 Devin McCourty, 5'11", 186 lbs., 4.51 1-27
2-35 Kareem Jackson, 5'11", 195 lbs., 4.55 1-20
2-39 Brandon Ghee, 6'0", 196 lbs., 4.46 3-96
3-44 Patrick Robinson, 5'11", 190 lbs., 4.41 1-32
4-72 Akwasi Owusu-Ansah, 6'1", 197 lbs., 4.48 4-126
4-73 Javier Arenas, 5'9", 195 lbs., 4.59 2-50
4-86 Dominique Franks, 6'0", 190 lbs., 4.55 5-135
4-93 Myron Lewis, 6'2", 204 lbs., 4.51 3-67
5-105 Kevin Thomas, 6'0", 189 lbs., 4.55 3-94
5-109 Alterrun Verner, 6'0", 181 lbs.4.55 4-104
5-114 Jamar Wall, 5'10", 204 lbs., 4.55 6-196
7-127 Walter Thurmond, 5'10", 185 lbs., 4.56 4-111
Notable exceptions: Chris Cook, Jerome Murphy, Amari Spievey, Trevard Lindley.
Cornerback, like defensive line and offensive tackle, is a push position, at least from Dallas' perspective. Note how many players were taken higher than their round. This makes sense, as the game creeps more towards the passing game with each passing season....

Punchline on opportunity:
•'If the Browns get to 6 and Julio Jones and Peterson are on the board, they could cut a deal, pocket Dallas' 3rd rounder, and still take Jones at 9. They picked CB Joe Haden 7th overall last year and SS T.J. Ward at the top of the 2nd. Peterson likely isn't in their plans.
If you could guarantee a quality 2nd round offensive lineman to complement Peterson, I'm on board, but if this deal goes down and Dallas enters the 3rd round with no pick and no offensive line help, well, I don't want to think about that. Dallas needs more than one player, no matter how good he is.'

I agree with you there, if we get Peterson by moving up and sacrificing our 3rd, we MUST get RT in the second, the best one possible. I am definitely for getting Peterson and Newman we can cut ties with, trade, or keep him for depth because he is a good CB but gets burned too often for what his salary is.

I was attempting to point out choices going into draft, and effects that could occur. Not attempting to influence direction of thread, but the post you referenced was from the Article itself...not my analysis in it's writing.
Your post above, stands upon it's own merit, although...

That is a major concern for me as well.
However, we have several options other than trading down with our 2nd rounder and trying to recoup our 3rd (and hoping that a starting quality OT is then available).
1. Instead of reaching in the draft, JJ's gets a decent RT in FA (whenever that begins). Of course, I'm sure the Cowboys have already run numbers assuming there in no cap and if there is a cap at various cap limits in terms of what the budget is.
2. Instead of trading away our 3rd rounder this year, we attempt to trade our 4th rounder this year and our 3rd rounder next year as well (or some combination).
Option 1 is preferable to me, but I'd like to get Huff in FA as well. To get both Huff and a quality RT may not be doable if a new cap is in place. If that is the case, we'd probably need to get a player like R Moore in the draft (along with Peterson), and then only focus on RT in FA.

Just think we almost could have had Alterrun Verner who had a nice season and made several plays against us in the Cowboys vs Titans game instead of Jamar Wall.
Rue thread worthy?

I think we need to put AOA back at CB. HE isn't a zone guy. Yes he has the speed to make plays all over but I think right now he is a beeter CB than FS.

I sure wish that we had scout comparisons between Cowboy roster players and who are on the team's list in preparation for this draft.

This is a very good point. I don't think alot of us really thought about AOA and his ability to play CB. He has terrific size for a CB and if we do not draft one really high I wonder of this may be something that's on the staffs radar.
I know there are others but 3 guys that i think could really step up in there 2nd year for us are AOA , Brent and Costa. Not saying expect pro bowl type years just yet , But both AOA and Brent could be important parts of the defensive rotation this year . And Costa's could be our "john moffitt" type swingman G/C thus saving us a draft pick.

Costas may one day be a starting caliber C, but he is not very good at OG. If anyone on the roster has the potential to be a Moffitt type, it is Travis Bright.
