View Full Version : Mac vs. PC
:laugh2:
(CNN) -- Remember those Apple ads that cast the Mac as a 20-something, self-satisfied hipster while the PC was portrayed by an older, square-looking guy in a brown suit? Well, those characterizations, unfair as they may be, appear to have some truth to them.
An unscientific survey by Hunch, a site that makes recommendations based on detailed user preferences, found that Mac users tend to be younger, more liberal, more fashion-conscious and more likely to live in cities than people who prefer PCs.
Of the 388,000 Hunch users who responded to a question about computer loyalty, 52% identified themselves as PC people as opposed to 25% who said they are Mac devotees. Hunch then cross-referenced those responses with answers to other questions to draw cultural distinctions between the rival Mac and PC camps.
The results suggest Mac users can be seen, depending on your perspective, as bolder and more creative -- or elitist and more pretentious. (:laugh2: )
The report found that 67% of Mac users have a college or advanced degree, as opposed to 54% of PC users. Mac loyalists are 80% more likely than PC users to be vegetarians, and, unlike PC fans, would rather ride a Vespa scooter than a Harley.
The conclusions are hilarious... Read the rest @ CNN (http://www.cnn.com/2011/TECH/web/04/22/mac.pc.users/index.html?hpt=T2)

At this point isnt MAC really just another brand of a PC? To me it is just the most proprietary PC on the market. That is why I will never buy a MAC, they can keep their over priced systems as far as I am concerned.

PC until Mac can actually compete.
I don't even understand the PC vs Mac thing. I've used both extensively.
Mac doesn't come close to what a PC can do inside and out, and it's overpriced for what you get.
For a little while there Mac stood above PC as far as graphic design goes, but that's over and done with.
Mac really can't compete with PC atm. They need to stick with their iGadgets because those are actually good and better than the competition atm.
The photo above should read "Are you computer literate?" instead of "Are you gay", and switch the PC/Mac Symbols around.

Apple does design better; They are best for people that don't want to futz with components or fiddly programs. Also for people who are afraid of computers.
Funny thing about the fashion comparison: Harleys are just like Apples in their 'fashion statement', lifestyle brigade followers, just with more testosterone.

I wonder if they involve work computers in this.
Most corporations just give their employees PC's because they are cheap and they will just be used to browse the web and work is MS Office.

I've been PC all my life but use a Mac for work. After using them for a while now I'm slowly moving towards macs and probably what I'll buy next. I just wish they weren't so expensive.
The OS on macs are more stable and don't have to worry about the virus issue for the most part.
The posts that PCs do way more...well...I can do 99% of the same exact stuff I do on PC on the Mac...video games are the only down side. I can run Adobe CS5 for my design work, my 3d modeling apps and video editing is better on the mac. So far those who say PCs are for work and Macs are toys, that's pure BS. Besides, with the mac you can just run windows in parrallels. I'm not a mac fanboy but I do like mac stuff. I swear, both sides of the mac vs pc war say the dumbest things.

I build my own PCs for a fraction of what it would cost to buy a Mac or a pre-built PC for that matter, and I play PC games, so I really am a PC guy out of necessity.
I own an ipod, and I'll probably end up getting an ipad as well, so it's not like I don't like apple, I just don't need a very expensive computer that can't do as much stuff but also is very stable.
PCs are not some unstable virus magnet anyway, unless the person using it is a dip****.

Price is a very good reason to avoid a Mac. It's ridiculous what they're charging and when I do buy, I buy it as stripped as possible and get the RAM, hard drives and as much as possible from places like newegg or crucial.
Aside from price all the arguments from either side are subjective and both platforms look pretty lame from the standpoint of the user of one over another.
The notion that they're obsolete after a short while is false. I've had this same machine for a good 5 years (1st gen Intel) and it's still a powerhouse, because I know how to beef it up and keep it clean. I'm not sure what there is to upgrade, beyond the RAM, DVD Drive, hard drives and video cards and it's not at all difficult. But I'm not a techie, I'm an artist, so whatever benefit there is to upgrading anything else is lost on me.
The reason Windows is bigger in business is because communication is far more utilized in all business than graphics and art are. The average user uses it as a typewriter on steroids/a communication device/a research tool. Word processing and the web work fine on both and there's no benefit of one over the other really, but it would be insane to spend that kind of money on a Mac for those things when you can get the same for far less.

You don't need a hugely powerful video card on Macs because their game library is very limited. Valve recently moved their source games over though, so that's a big plus for any potential gamers wanting to go Mac.

"Don't buy a Mac because you could spend a lot if you go top shelf and upgrade it"
Joshmvii

No, you spend a lot even if you don't go top shelf. I'm not saying people shouldn't buy a mac if they want one, but they're insanely overpriced. Hell, even a Dell pre-built is insanely overpriced compared to what it costs to just build it yourself. Apple just takes it even further.

I've loved every Mac I've ever owned, I can't say the same for every PC I've ever owned.
There is something to be said for getting a machine and OS that were built to go together.
Plus no one's got anything on Apple when it comes to hardware design, and as a designer, I'd like to believe there is some value in that.

Don't forget to add in the yearly price for virus protection with the PC's. Adds up. The frustration with owning a PC is also something to consider. Ctrl+Alt+Del takes it's toll on the physchy.

I've got a pretty new mac desktop. it may not have a bunch of features computer people like to use (I really have no idea I'm not a huge computer guy). But its reliable as hell and so simple a cave man could use it.

Then they shouldn't and they are uninformed.
I have never paid for virus protection and have always used a free version. I hardly have to use it, and I've never had problems.

I don't claim to understand it, but the benefit of a better video card is for working in 3D not gaming. I have yet to really look in to how it benefits, I just do the work. I upgraded mine because the original Nvidia died.
